Ferris Memorial Lectureship in Pediatric Urology Sponsored by the Hohn Family

The annual L. William Ferris, MD, Memorial Lectureship in Pediatric Urology was held on Wednesday October 19. The Memorial Lectureship in Pediatric Urology was established in 1992 to honor Dr. Ferris, Director of The Wilmington Medical Center’s Department of Urology, who passed away in 1982. The Division received a very generous donation from the Hohn family to support this conference for the next several years.

We were pleased to welcome Armando J. Lorenzo, MD, MSc, FRCSC, FAAP, FACS Associate Professor, Department of Surgery University of Toronto and Head, Division of Urology for The Hospital for Sick Children (pictured).

Dr. Lorenzo was born in Panama City, Panama, where he lived until moving to the United States for residency training in urology. He spent six years in Dallas, completing an ACGME-approved program in urology at UT Southwestern Medical School. While rotating at Children’s Medical Center, he had the opportunity to explore all medical and surgical aspects of pediatric urology, and experience that led him to pursue fellowship training in this subspecialty. After visiting Toronto, he was granted a fellowship position at the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto, including a research year in basic science funded by the Urology Care Foundation of the American Urological Association.

Once he completed his fellowship, Dr. Lorenzo obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto’s HPME program. Since then, he has been a staff pediatric urologist at the Hospital for Sick Children and has advanced to the academic position of associate professor in the Department of Surgery and investigator at the Research Institute. He is board-certified in urology and pediatric urology by the American Board of Urology and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada.

Dr. Lorenzo’s interests are centered in clinical care, with a focus in outcomes research, pediatric urological oncology, and renal transplantation, generating multiple peerreviewed publications and book chapters. He is also co-director of the Fertility Preservation Program at Sick Kids, a unique project in Canada that has grown in scope to address future fertility concerns for pediatric patients at risk, most notably those receiving chemotherapy and radiation. Dr. Lorenzo is also actively involved in multiple national and international societies, currently serving on the executive committee of the Society for Fetal Urology and the Pediatric Urology Oncology Working Group of the Society for Pediatric Urology.

One of the most exciting aspects of his academic mission is traveling to different parts of the world, interacting with scientists and health care providers, sharing ideas, and seeking collaboration. In addition to his clinical and research interests, Dr. Lorenzo is the current division head, a position that he accepted in April 2020.

Through the generosity of the Hohn family, the L. William Ferris Lectureship in Pediatric Urology was established.

The program consisted of a lecture by Dr. Lorenzo titled “Posterior Urethral Valves: Can We Delay the Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease” and case presentations by urology residents at the Nemours Children’s Hospital, our pediatric affiliate in Wilmington Delaware. The next day, Dr. Lorenzo presented Grand Rounds at Sidney Kimmel Medical College titled, “Emerging Technologies in UrologyAntenatal Hydronephrosis.”

Pediatric Urology Update from Nemours Children’s Hospital

by Dr. Sonny Figueroa

In 2022, Dr. Jennifer Hagerty started serving a six-year term as a member of the ACGME Urology Residency Review Committee. Dr. Hagerty was promoted to Associate Professor of Urology and Pediatrics, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. In May, Dr. Hagerty participated as a panelist at the AUA-SPU meeting in New Orleans. The panel was titled Neurogenic Bladder-Beyond Spina Bifida, and Dr. Hagerty presented the overview of Pediatric Spinal Cord Injury.

Dr. Puneeta Ramachandra assumed the responsibilities of Quality Officer, Division of Urology. In this role, Dr. Ramachandra oversees the quality efforts for the Division, including Morbidity and Mortality Conference, participation in the ACS NSQIP and ACS Children Surgery Verification at Nemours.

Dr. Ahmad Bani Hani has taken an indefinite leave of absence to attend to the care of an ailing family member in Jordan. We are very sorry to see him leave our institution. Ahmad has served as the Pediatric Urology residency coordinator at our hospital for the last decade, providing an excellent job in the education of the Jefferson urology and other residents. In July 2022, Dr. Bani Hani led a medical mission to Jordan that included participation by two of our Jefferson Urology residents, Drs. Halley Foss and Edward Kloneckie. See page 10 for details on this trip.

In his place, Dr. Sonny Figueroa, Chief of Pediatric Urology at Nemours has named Dr. Keara De Cotiis as the new residency and medical student coordinator. She will oversee the educational programs for the pediatric urology rotation. Keara, completed her urology residency at Brown under Dr. Tony Caldamone, and her Urology/Transplant fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto under Dr. Armando Lorenzo who was our 2022 Ferris Lecturer (see page 29). She has been the medical student coordinator for our division since she joined us. We are very excited to have Keara take the lead in this important area and in the training of the urology residents.
