October 5, 2015 • office@jeffersonunitarian.org • www.jeffersonunitarian.org • Volume 2015, Issue 18 Sunday, October 11 • 9:15 & 11 a.m. • Infant/toddler care provided.

Strength in What Remains presented by Rev. Eric Banner, Assistant Minister

None of us make it out of this world without the scars that show where we’ve been. And sometimes those injuries leave permanent marks behind, but the strength to carry on come not from what we’ve lost, but from what remains. Music: Melissa Monforti. Sunday, October 18 • 9:15 & 11 a.m. • Infant/toddler care provided.

Beyond the Winning presented by Rev. Wendy Williams, Senior Minister

Lao Tsu wrote “By letting it go it all gets done! the world is won by those who let it go! but when you try and try ! the world is beyond the winning.” What? Isn’t it by our effort that everything gets done? Is there wisdom in acknowledging not everything is within our control? Music: JUC Choir Looking ahead to… Sunday, October 25: Living to Die presented by Rev. Eric Banner, Assistant Minister. The old joke says they put fences around cemetaries because people are just dying to get in. And Halloween is about death as much as it is about candy and costumes. The most difficult letting go most of us will ever face lies in our own mortality. And all of us should be prepared so that when our day comes it will be said we died the way we lived.

Civil Rights Pilgrimage

All Church Workshop an Engaging Community Experience

Partnering with the Unitarian Universalist Living Legacy Project, JUC is offering a Civil Rights Pilgrimage through the south, March 18-25, 2016! Watch for new information, the itinerary, and study groups (whether you are going or not). We hope you will join us for this unique opportunity where past and present collide. Sponsored by UUSC Task Force Contact: Rev. Wendy Williams & Betsy Brown (wenbets@comcast.net)

Surprisingly, laughter frequently filled the air Saturday, Sept. 26, as 64 members of our church community spent the day together in the Mission and Ministry Empowerment: Partnering with Policy workshop. Rev. Robert Latham, in his engaging style, facilitated a presentation and discussion on how policy based governance is being adapted to UU churches and what that means to JUC’s mission and ministry. Most attendees left saying, “Now I get it!”

Welcome Our Newest Members!

The congregation was well represented by attendees, about 20 of whom were members when Robert was our Senior Minister during the ‘90s. About ten have been members only a year or two and another 30 or so in between. Most are active volunteers or current leaders, but they were joined by a few of the less active, but interested folks. We shared a lovely lunch on the patio together. People asked good questions and made useful comments. Everyone seemed to enjoy the dialogue with each other and with Robert.

Chelsea Blake works in the legal and financial field; her interests include social justice, mentoring, creative writing, art, dance, nature and animals. Archturiat Baumann works as a computer engineer, and his interests include electronics and do-it-yourself projects. Be on the lookout for notices of opportunities for joining in on this community conversation. If you know someone who attended the workshop, ask for their impressions. If you attended, thank you for sharing the day with our community, and tell your friends what you learned.

Bryce Carter works in community organizing and advocacy. His hobbies include hiking, camping, and travel. Katie Edwards is a long-time UU. Her hobbies include singing and reading.

Thank you to John and Nita Bradford, Stan and Mary Hamilton, and everyone else who pitched in to make the event a success.

Brian Gregg is a retired scientist whose interests include meditation, singing, hiking, and biking.

JUC FAMILY CORNER

News for Families About Programming at Jefferson Unitarian Church The demands and pressures on families these days are rather mind boggling to me. It’s been a while since I had kids still at home (more than a decade to be exact) and the world has changed so profoundly. Between the internet and the global community it has created and the pressures on children to be involved in so many outside activities, I’m amazed y’all can carve out time for anything else. I am moved and inspired that you make time for religious community. I know how precious your weekend time is and appreciate that just getting your families to church takes great commitment and sometimes, effort. It is the most basic and fundamental demonstration of your Unitarian Universalist values and faith. Once you get your family in the door at JUC, then it’s time to build the community that supports your values.

Walk With Our Kids

Consider pitching in? Sharing your talents? Help us live our values by giving your time to the next generation of JUC. We’re still looking for 2 Pre-K/Kindergarten teachers.

Welcome Megan Pearce to Our Nursery We’re so excited to welcome Megan Pearce as the Nursery Lead at 11:00 a.m. Megan is a preschool teacher with a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University (Go Spartans!) and a Master of Education from Arizona State University. She has worked as a volunteer coordinator and non-profit community organizer. Most recently Megan has taught in urban schools and as a private tutor. In her spare time, she enjoys sleeping, baking, hiking, bike rides with her husband and daughter (2.5 years old), Disney princess movies, practicing yoga and watching toddlers attempt to play soccer. She is happy to spend some Sunday

The RE Ministry Team and I would like to help you make connections with other families with children of similar ages. We are hosting a series of potluck meals (breakfasts and lunches) for various age groups to help parents and guardians meet one another. The church has a busy calendar but we’ve carved out times over the next several months.

Looking to Connect with YRUU?

The first one will be for our families with the youngest children. It will be on Sunday, October 25, from 10:15-10:55 a.m. in the chapel and childcare will be provided. Simply get yourselves to church, sign your children into their RE rooms, bring some simple breakfast food to share and enjoy meeting and talking with other young families.

Do you have a son or daughter in the Young Religious Unitarian Universalist (YRUU) high school youth group at 11 a,m. on Sunday mornings? Want to know what is happening this coming Sunday, next Sunday, when the next CON is, what a CON is? Send your name and email address to Andrea Aikin (pivoaiki@sprynet.com) to be added to the weekly YRUU email list.

Connecting in faith,

Annie

October is for turning Pumpkins into Houses!! Jefferson Unitarian Church is a member of the Jeffco Partners for Interfaith Action. Please join us in making a real difference in our community, one house at a time. Here are three ways that you can contribute: 1.
