Tantalum, niobium, tungsten, titanium, REE, gold and gems deposits in the Guainía Department, northern Amazon area of Colombia. Zezé Amaya Perea Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Sede Bogotá, Facultad de Ciencias Departamento de Geociencias. zamayap@unal.edu.co In the Guainía Department, in the northern part of the Colombian Amazon area, we could distinguish outcrops and alluvial samples containing mineral associations that could indicate a potential for ore deposits. These areas present chemical elements such as Ta, Nb, W, Ti, REE, Au and gems (amethyst and rock crystal quartz variety). However, the large extension, nature and inaccessibility of the rain forest area difficult exploration and regulated extraction of these minerals. Inirida and Guainía riversare the major tributary in the area and cross a great lithological variety - which outcrops partly in its channels and surroundings –of the

rocks of the NW-Amazonian Craton. They belong to the Geochronological Province Rio Negro-Juruena (1.8-1.55 Ga after Tassinari and Macambira 2004) or Rio Negro (1.82-1.52 Gaafter Santos et al. 2006), and metasedimentary rocks ofthe Maimachi Formation (Renzoni 1989), the latter related to the RoraimaFormation in Venezuela and Tunui Formation in Brazil (Toussaint 1993). The strong chemical and physical weathering of these rock bodies is due to the tropical humid clime and the rain forest river systemanddevelops metallic and non-metallicplacer deposits. Gold is found in primary hydrothermal deposits in the serraniasof Naquén, CañoBocon andCaranacoa, associated with hydrated quartz, and secondarily in alluvial deposits in the vicinity of the Inirida, Guainía and Cuyari rivers. Another group of metallic minerals are oxides of elements such as titanium, tungsten, tantalum and niobium, sometimes with uranium and rare earth elements;alsobismutiteinclusions in wolframites occur. Fe and Ti oxideslike ilmeniteare common in the Inirida River sediments, often with inclusions as pyrochlores. Such pyrochloreinclusions are also found in ferrocolumbite deposits in the south Cuyari River. Among the non-metallic minerals we mention amethyst and rock crystal in the Caranacoa and Naquén serranias, probably as a result of the precipitation of dissolved silicate-rich rocks like sandstone and quartzitesat the western borders with Vichada and Guaviare departments.
