WORLD WAR II

SOME

GAVE

Seaman 2nd Class Wilbur Barrett

ALL

Pfc. Edwin Cooke

In the weeks and months following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Kansans answered the call to serve their country. All told, an estimated 215,000 Kansans, a little over 12% of the state’s population at the time, were in uniform during World War II. This week marks 75 years since Japan signed formal surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri, officially marking the end of the war. The number of lives lost during those terrible years was extraordinarily high. Among that number were at least 5,478 Kansans in the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines who made the supreme sacrifice for our country. Inside today’s Eagle, we honor these heroes by listing their names and sharing stories from family, friends and others. Above all, we thank them for defending our freedoms. See pages 11A-18A

Women in WWII: Help us tell their stories BY AMY RENEE LEIKER

aleiker@wichitaeagle.com

Earlier this month, The Eagle asked readers to tell us about Kansan who died while serving in the military in WWII. Now, we want to hear about and from the women who served. If you or a relative participated in the armed services or worked as a military nurse during the war, we want you to share your story. Service branches for women during WWII include the Women’s Army Corp (WAC), the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS), the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP), the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve (WR) and the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). Go online to www.kansas.com/databases to share your name and some of your story, or email aleiker@wichitaeagle.com. You can also send information via postal mail to: The Wichita Eagle, Attn: WWII Women, 330 N. Mead, Wichita, KS 67202. Please include your name, phone number and email address with submissions. We may contact you for an interview. Please do not send original photographs, letters, news clippings or other documents. They will not be returned. If you have questions about submissions, contact Amy Renee Leiker at aleiker@wichitaeagle.com or 316-268-6644.

Technician 5th Grade Herman Fleming Herman was my dad’s big brother, someone he looked up to since their father had died when my dad was very young. My grandmother had 10 children, but only six had lived. They didn’t have it easy. The Republican River flood in 1935 set them back further. Herman died during Exercise Tiger, the “rehearsal“ for D-Day. The maneuvers off the coast of England at Slapton Sands in Devon were attacked by the Germans. Many souls in the amphibious landing vehicles lost their lives that day. The failed mission was kept secret for decades. My dad did lots of research on Exercise Tiger as a way to know more about how his beloved brother perished. Coincidentally, when I was living in England for a few years I was able to take my dad to Slapton Sands to see the small monument to the tragic event. My Uncle Herman lies at the bottom of Lyme Bay. God rest his soul. Rhonda Fleming Hayes

Pfc. Theodore Hood Theodore Cecil Hood was born in 1915 and lived much of his life in Kiowa, Kan. All that I know about Cecil was shared with me by his adoring younger brother, James Hood, who was my father. Both Cecil and James were veterans of World War II. James survived the war and lived a remarkable life spending much of that time keeping the memory of his brother alive. He died on June 24th, 2020, and was 98 at his passing. Cecil died in combat before he could marry and start a family and Jim kept his memory alive. As told by Jim, Cecil was a brilliant pianist and organist. He was regularly was called upon to play the organ and piano at local churches. After high school, Cecil went to work for the newly created Civilian Conservation Corps, which was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. In the CCC, Cecil worked on national conservation projects such as planting trees and building flood barriers. These young men lived in work camps and earned $30 per month. For several years during the Great Depression, this money is what supported his parents and younger brother. After working in the CCC, Cecil moved to Kiowa and Medicine Lodge and worked at the local newspapers setting linotype. He also became very interested in photography and began to contribute written articles. Eventually, he was drafted into the Army and served in the infantry. During his time in the UK, Cecil would travel to different churches and play the organ at some of the cathedrals near where he was stationed. His brother Jim was drafted in the Army Air Corp and served onboard a B-24. After several missions, Jim’s B-24 crashed into the North Sea — and although he survived, eight of his ten crew mates were killed and he was grounded. This gave Jim enough leave time to spend a week with Cecil in the UK. That leave was the last time Jim saw Cecil alive. On Aug. 3, 1944, Cecil was killed during the Battle of Normandy, part of the Allied advancement back into to Europe. Cecil’s remains are buried in Kiowa. Joel Hood

2nd Lt. John “Jack” Tennery and Staff Sgt. Max Barner Belle Plaine Cemetery has a memorial garden dedicated to the young men from Belle Plaine who died in the world wars. One of the small white crosses bears the name of 2nd Lt. John Harvey “Jack” Tennery, shown right, a son of John and Henrietta (Williams) Tennery. The Tennery farm was east of town, along the Cowskin Creek between Belle Plaine and Oxford. Jack was one semester away from completing his degree in veterinary medicine at Kansas State College, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, when he signed up for pilot training in the Army Air Corps, enlisting at Fort Riley on Dec. 11, 1941, only days after the Pearl Harbor attack. Jack Tennery was born on the family farm 100 years ago on June 13, 1920. He died on Nov. 19, 1943, when his fighter plane crash landed in Italy as he returned from his 40th combat mission. He had flown missions in North Africa and was then flying support for bombing missions over Eastern Europe. His plane, a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, had distinctive twin booms and a central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. General Jimmy Doolittle had described the P-38 as “the sweetest flying plane in the sky.” Jack was part of the 15th US Air Corps 82nd Fighter Group. He is buried in the Belle Plaine Cemetery. Another cross in the memorial garden, near the one honoring Jack Tennery, is one in memory of Max Eldo Barner. He was the only child of Sam and Gertrude (Hunt) Barner. He was born on Feb. 8, 1924, and died when his bomber went down over Italy on Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1944. He is buried at Florence American Cemetery in Italy. Staff Sgt. Barner was in the 342nd Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group. He received a Purple Heart and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. These two young men grew up together and both graduated from Belle Plaine High School. Jack and Max’s grandfathers were pioneer farmers near Belle Plaine. Jack’s Grandfather Tennery and Max’s Grandfather Hunt came to Kansas together from Illinois and the two families were lifelong friends, socializing often. Mary and AJ Hartley

Pfc. Franklin Davis, Seaman 1st Class Oscar Bird and Tech. Sgt. Daniel Dyer Jr. Franklin W. Davis Jr. was the third of six children born to Frank and Ruth (Hume) Davis. He grew up on the family farm in rural Williamsburg, Kan. Franklin, shown right, entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1943, and was assigned to the quartermaster corps. He trained at Camp Young and Camp Haan, Calif., before being transferred to Fort Pierce, Fla., for advanced training. He was sent to the European theater in February 1944. He was declared missing in action on April 28, 1944, and his death was confirmed in August 1944. From an Aug. 7, 1944, newspaper article: “... Davis of Williamsburg was missing in action on April 28 as the result of German E boats sinking American LST boats engaged in pre-invasion [for D-Day] rehearsals.” I have copies of three letters written by his father; each one was returned with the notation “Missing In Action” written on the envelope. Each of the letters starts, “Dear Dub” or “Dear Son Dub.” This first bit is from a diary entry written by my grandmother, Wava Farrington, on Dec. 9, 1941. “Already we are feeling the direct effects of war. Several Lincoln County boys are in the danger zone. Mary Bird’s brother is on the ship Oklahoma. The Dyer boy from Beverly was killed. His parents being notified today. Our Christmas program was discontinued when an order from Federal Government stopping all activities connected with shortwave broadcasting. The banning of the radio activity is one of the first acts of a nation at war. The broadcasts can not easily be censored and might be used by aliens to give out vital information. Such broadcasting might also use wave lengths needed for military communication ... .” The fact was that Mary Bird’s brother, Oscar, was not on the USS Oklahoma, or even in Hawaii on the morning of Dec. 7. According to a newspaper account published in April, 1942, Oscar was on the aircraft tender USS Langley in Manila on Dec. 6, 1941, but his parents didn’t know his location because of the slowness of mail from ship to shore. His earlier letters talked about his stints in Hawaii, the Philippines and Guam, so Lincoln residents thought he was dead. Sadly, Oscar Bird did not survive the war. Oscar and several of his crew mates were rescued from the sinking USS Langley by the naval tanker USS Pecos. However the Pecos was sunk south of Java after being attacked by Japanese aircraft. Although Oscar’s body was never recovered a grave marker honoring his memory is located in the Lincoln, Kan., cemetery. There was no confusion about the death of Daniel Dyer. Lt. B.F. Humphrey B.F. “Bud” Humphrey was my uncle. He was born in Herington, Kan., in 1910; he also lived in Ottawa and Lawrence. He joined the Navy after graduating from Ottawa High School in 1927. Following that he joined the family in Lawrence and graduated as an Army Lieutenant from K.U. in 1939. After initially serving with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Kansas, as the war grew closer, he was transferred to the Coast Artillery Corps and then assigned to the 60th C.A.C., Battery Chicago, on the island fortress of Corregidor, Philippine Islands. Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese on May 6, 1942, a month after the fall of Bataan. Bud survived the atrocious conditions of being a prisoner of war of the Japanese for over two and a half years when he and approximately 1,800 other POWs, mostly American, were shipped to Japan. On Oct. 24, 1944, while in the South China Sea, the ship he was on, the Arisan Maru, was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine. Only eight (some records say nine) of the 1,800 POWs survived. Bud’s family did not learn of his tragic fate until after the war. They did learn, however, that during the courageous defense of Corregidor, Bud was twice cited for bravery under fire and awarded the Silver Star award with an oakleaf cluster, signifying a second Silver Star award. His name is enshrined in the Memorial Campanile on the KU campus. Bud has been elected to the Ottawa High School Wall of Honor and he has been named a Hometown Hero by the Ottawa Veterans Parade Committee. He is certainly considered a hero by his family. Bob Gage
