Your Four-Day Mackinac Holiday There are so many things to see and do on Mackinac Island it’s no wonder visitors often stay for an extended weekend or longer. Be sure to check out the discounted rates all the hotels offer especially during the off seasons; May, September and October. With over 80 percent of Mackinac Island a state park, free of charge and open year round, Mackinac Island is the perfect place for nature hikes, bicycle rides, kayak tours, sailing adventures, golf and just getting out to discover the natural gems of Mackinac. Taking in the sights and sounds of Mackinac Island has never been so easy! Victorian architecture, horse and buggies, natural rock formations, cobalt sparkling water, fresh air and no cars all await you. To make the most of your visit, follow this sample itinerary:

Day One

Board one of the 3 ferry lines from either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace bright and early. Ferries begin service at 7:30 am during season. Arrive ready to start sightseeing. First stop of the morning, Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau Visitors Center for brochures, maps, dining guides, and schedule of special events. It’s located on Main St. right downtown. Once loaded up with literature and a map, rent some bikes and ride around the perimeter of the Island. The 8 mile ride is all flat, and quite beautiful! Stop for lunch half way around, or pack a picnic to have on the beach along the way. Stop at British Landing and visit the State Park Nature Center. When cruising back into town, explore side roads, Main St. and Market St. to get familiar with the downtown area, it’s not large. After your ride, it’s time to check into your hotel, and relax. Then review the dining guide and this magazine to help decide where to have dinner. Drinks, dinner, dessert and live music downtown until 2 am if you’re up to it. If kids are still rowdy

and want more activities try night glow golf. Every night at 10 pm bugle taps from Fort Mackinac can be heard everywhere downtown.

Day Two

Up early and have a hearty breakfast before your first full day of activities. The most enjoyable way to see and learn about Mackinac Island is by a horse-drawn narrative tour. Board the carriage right next to the Tourism Bureau Visitors Center for the 1-3/4 hour tour of the Island. Your tour concludes at Historic Fort Mackinac. Enter this living history museum with 14 Revolutionary Warera original buildings, costumed interpreters, educational displays, canon and musket firing, kids center and plenty more. Have lunch at the Fort Tea Room. Operated by Grand Hotel’s culinary staff, the Tea Room has one of the finest views on the Island. After lunch, head downtown. Your Fort ticket is valid at several downtown historical buildings. Enjoy some shopping, visit a few art galleries, and sample fudge. Have dinner, then stroll down to the boardwalk for a glorious sunset. If you’re still ready for more, dress up and head to Grand Hotel for ballroom dancing.

Day Three

Don’t sleep in, today is full of more activity. Rent your own drive yourself carriage or saddle horses. Go golfing at one of 3 awesome golf courses on the Island, rental clubs available. Kids also love a 4 Inside Mackinac

/ 2014

hands-on butterfly exhibit. There are two on the island. Go swimming on the beach below arch rock, rent kayaks and paddle around the shoreline, go sailing on a 50’ sailboat, or a leisurely cruise on a lighthouse tour. Hike Tranquil Bluff trail to Sugar Loaf, Skull Cave or find Fort Holmes, the highest point on the Island - fabulous views. There are literally 70 miles of roads, bike trails, and foot paths to explore on bikes, by foot or on horseback. Enjoy lunch or dinner at one of many fantastic Island restaurants. Don’t forget happy hour at any of the famous Island pubs.

Day Four

Today is more refined. Come early, pay the admission and tour Grand Hotel. There is plenty to do inside the hotel: shopping, legendary displays, hall of history and fabulous common areas to indulge in for hours. Your admission into the hotel applies toward the Grand Lunch Buffet, in the main dining room - unforgettable! Take an intimate carriage tour on a more private antique livery buggy on the boulevard in front of Ft Mackinac. This carriage tour is very personable and takes you to vistas off the beaten path led by your personal guide. Later, visit the island museums. They have genuinely fantastic exhibits full of Mackinac culture and history.  Ready to relax? Get a massage or a facial, or try a wine tasting at a local wine bistro.  Don’t forget to buy fudge, souvenirs and postcards before you leave. A full visit to the Island will be enough to make you fall in love with this marvelous place. With each visit back to the Island, you’ll discover more than you ever thought Mackinac had to offer. See you again next time!

Autumn on Mackinac Island As summer winds down and kids head back to school, it’s time to think about another trip to Mackinac Island. Take in Mother Nature’s annual fall color show on the Island by foot, bicycle, horseback or carriage. Mackinac Island’s landscape becomes a glorious gallery of beautiful colors, and the best part is that there are fewer people to share it with! With cooler temperatures and the Island streets less busy, Fall is a good time to experience the peace and tranquility of Island life. Hike or bike the more than 70 miles of roads and trails around and through the middle of the Island. Enjoy the crisp air along the scenic route M-185, the road that circles Mackinac Island. Tour through the interior trails of Mackinac Island State Park, Michigan’s first state park (the second national park in the nation), to observe the autumn hues of the maple and oak trees. Or relax and gaze at the fall color during a narrated carriage tour visiting the points of interest while enjoying the natural beauty of the Island. Fall weather tends to be moderate as the surrounding Great Lakes keep the Island temperatures a little warmer than the mainland. The “Indian Summer” phenomena is a wonderful time with especially warm, calm, dry days and cool evenings.

In addition to fun-filled weekend discounts, many Island accommodations offer reduced rates and value added packages during the weekdays. During the month of October, enjoy the Spartan Store’s Giveaway to Mackinac Island Promotion. The Giveaway to Mackinac Island introduces an opportunity

Living History Museums Mackinac Island State Park Mackinac Island State Park is characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and unique geological formations. Without automobiles, away from the noises of the city, the park is a quiet respite. Over 80 percent of the Island is within Mackinac Island State Park where you’ll discover true natural gems. Whether visiting on foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, the many geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures. Historic Fort Mackinac On a southern bluff overlooking the majestic Straits of Mackinac is the stately stone palisade of Fort Mackinac. Built in 1780, it is the Island’s most formidable attraction. Inside the fort walls are 14 original buildings filled with interactive displays and 1880s period furnishings. Costumed historic interpreters guide visitors through realistic demonstrations, reenactments, programs, and tours. Hear bugle, fife and drum music, rifle fire and a cannon blast. Dance to a 19th-century tune. March with soldiers.

Watch a soldier court martial reenactment. Play Victorian children’s games. From June 9 to August 18, your Fort Mackinac and Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum admission also includes full access to the five Historic Mackinac Downtown buildings. They include the Biddle House, Benjamin Blacksmith Shop, American Fur Company Store/Dr. Beaumont Museum, McGulpin House, and Mission

Church. Step inside these buildings, many filled with period furnishings and historic interpreters, to experience 19th century Mackinac Island. The McGulpin House is a beautiful example of 18thcentury French-Canadian architecture. For more information, visit online www.mackinacparks.com, stop by the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center across from Marquette Park or call 231-436-4100.

Museums The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum From Native American art to presentday paintings of Mackinac Island, The Art Museum showcases treasures from Mackinac State Historic Parks’ collection and inspires creativity. See and learn about Mackinac-inspired art from centuries ago and today, from 18th-century maps to detailed historic paintings and hand-tinted photographs. Together, these many priceless art works create a historic masterpiece of Mackinac, and only here can you see them all. Through audiovisual programs and hands-on techniques, fully immerse yourself in art and its creation. From early June to late August, the Kids’ Art Studio, in the museum’s lower level, brings a world of handson creativity to your entire family. With parental or guardian guidance, children can spend hours drawing, painting, beading, stamping, and creating collages and window art. Stuart House Museum During Mackinac’s early history French and American voyagers came to the Island to sell furs trapped in Canada and Michigan. In 1817 John Jacob Astor set up the American Fur Trading Company in Mackinac Island’s Stuart House. The outpost helped America’s expansion west, making the Midwest and Great Lakes a major trade center. Today, the company headquarters is open to the public for tours, admission is by donation. Open 9:30 to 4:30 daily. 906-847-8181 The Michigan Governor’s Summer Residence Built by Islander Patrick Doud in 1902, this Victorian masterpiece was purchased in 1945 for $15,000 by the State of Michigan and is now used as the summer residence of the Governor of Michigan. With 11 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, the house retains many original fixtures and furnishings.

Explore Mackinac on Two Wheels Exploring on bicycle is the best way to get around and see Mackinac. Bring your own bikes or rent some on the Island and ride the eight mile perimeter route along M-185. It’s the easiest and most popular ride on Mackinac. It’s mostly flat, very scenic, and takes about an hour without stopping, but you will want to take photos and enjoy the beauty so allow at least 2 hours. insider tip: For a little more challenging ride, head into the interior for a variety of rolling paved roads, wooded trails and paved bike paths offering challenging rides for cyclists of all levels. Pack your own food or order a box lunch from Doud’s Market, ride a couple miles and stop on the beach for a picnic lunch break; it’s nearly all state park property and is yours to enjoy. Ride to British Landing, roughly half way around the Island, and visit the State Park Nature Center, then turn up into the Island’s interior on British Landing Road. It’s somewhat hilly but fun to ride. Stop at Historic Wawashkamo Golf Course, for a rest stop along the uphill climb. Visit the Equestrian Center. Riding up the center of the Island, British Landing Rd. branches out to numerous other trails and bike paths. Take Crooked Tree Road to see

Sugarloaf then continue on to Arch Rock and the East Bluff. For another good ride, by the cemetery take the road up to Fort Holmes for a spectacular view from the highest point on the Island. Leslie Avenue, also off British Landing Road, is a nice bike path that follows a beautiful route leading to the North and South Bike Trails. These rolling trails are paved with near perfect riding conditions. For a more aggressive ride, Tranquil Bluff Trail has some of the most difficult

mountain bike terrain anywhere. Some sections are extremely difficult but cedar groves, steep climbs, limestone cliffs and scenic overlooks make this an expert ride with beautiful conditions. Fudge! Mackinac Island is known for its world famous, hand made fudge. For well over 100 years, candy makers on Mackinac have been making fudge by hand for millions of customers. You can buy a box of the famous fudge and save it as a souvenir or enjoy the souvenir soon as you hit the street and eat some right out of the box. Watching the fudge being made at Murdick’s Fudge is a real experience. The smell of the delicious fudge as it is cooling on big marble slabs is blown into the street enticing many a sweet tooth to come and sample a flavor. Most stores do offer free samples and what better way to find your favorite among the numerous fine candy makers on the Island. Several innovations throughout the century have changed the business, but typically, the recipe for fudge has not changed. Marvin May, of May’s Fudge, whose family has been making fudge for over 80 years, says “there are some candies that have a number of difficult steps, but fudge isn’t one of them. However, there are a couple of small things that are critical to making it right. Using quality ingredients and large marble slabs, to cool a fresh batch, are essential.” There’s nothing better than the sweet smell of fresh made fudge.

Find that Something Special

After the war of 1812, fur trappers came to the Island to trade their animal pelts. As the fur business faded in the 1870s, tourism grew to become Mackinac’s primary industry. Island residents adapted to the changing economy from furs and fishing to tourism. Native Americans and Islander entrepreneurs began selling souvenirs to visitors. oven sweet grass baskets, carved trinkets, pottery and birch bark novelties were typical items sold to Island visitors to remember their visit to Mackinac. These were the first souvenirs sold on Mackinac. Ever since, visitors to the Island have wanted souvenirs of their own. Buying a keepsake item, a memento or reminder of Mackinac is a wonderful idea, but the merchandise has changed quite a bit since those early years. Mackinac shops offers high quality clothing, gifts, games, jewelry, sunglasses, soaps, knives, hats, wine, books, artwork, shoes, and custom embroidered shirts, sweats and jackets emblazoned with Mackinac Island logos on them. Because there are no chain stores or formula retail on the Island, shopping here means you’ll find distinctive, one-of-a-kind treasures. Most of the stores are in close proximity; you can see a wide selection in a short period to time. Main Street and Market Street are easy walking distance from the major hotels and boat docks. Over a particularly long winter, several Island women decided to hand knit mittens using wool woven from sweaters that shrank in the dryer or fell out of style. These brightly colored, often mis-matched mittens, each unique, but coordinated, are called Mackinac Mittens. This locally made item has become a popular souvenir. Search stores on Market St. to find them. Mackinac Island is full of wonderful shops and charming boutiques. Whether it’s something you need, something you want, or a gift from Mackinac to bring home to someone you love, you’ll find it at one of the many shops on the Island.
