ISearch at Home and on the Go! By Josh Pease, Library Support Specialist

INFOhio is excited to announce that ISearch now has an Access/Mobile View (A/M) that delivers a simpler, friendlier interface. With the recent Enterprise enhancements came the ability to enable Access/Mobile Mode in your own ISearch environment by clicking the icon in the ISearch banner displayed to the left.

Alternatively, you can append ?ic=true to the end of your unique ISeach URL. If you are unsure of your ISearch URL, please visit http://www.ohconnect.org/library/helpdocs/ to locate a list of URLs for Connect under the OPAC heading. Here’s an example of a standard ISearch URL: https://isearch9.infohio.org/client/ncc_ln_lnes Here’s an example of an Accessible / Mobile ISearch URL: https://isearch9.infohio.org/client/ncc_ln_lnes/?ic=true The new Access/Mobile view does everything ISearch can do, including the ability to place holds, all the while looking and working great on tablets and hand-held devices. This new Access/Mobile mode may be used for those working with younger students who feel the desktop version of ISearch presents too many options or is too advanced of an interface to work with. When Access/Mobile mode is enabled, ISearch will appear streamlined as in the screenshot to the right:

There’s more! Beginning in January (exact date TBD), ISearch will automatically detect when a mobile device is being used. Regardless of the screen size of your device, the Browser User Agent will be used to automatically enable Access/Mobile mode and display ISearch, so even tablets with a large screen will default to ISearch Mobile. In the meantime, please feel free to manually enable Access/Mobile view and start sharing with your students. Happy searching!

I would like to weed my library collection but I am not sure where to begin? Should I decide to pull based on circulation stats alone? Should the publication year and the condition of the item be the driving force on what to keep and what to discard? Help!?

Introducing Fetch! By Lori Slingerland, Lead Support Specialist, Library Services

Fetch! is the name for the new library catalog for our youngest users, which replaces CAT Jr. Both CAT and CAT Jr. use eLibrary, a software that is no longer in development. It continues to be more difficult to manage and is not functioning properly for more and more of INFOhio’s school libraries. This fall, a group of library volunteers from across the state of Ohio began testing a new OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) in anticipation of replacing CAT Jr. The test group found a suitable replacement for CAT Jr. and the new OPAC will be known as Fetch. Fetch includes basic searching, reading-level searching, visual search, and links to ISearch to place holds. Beginning March 1, 2021, the ‘Fetch’ icon will appear on all library landing pages and be available to all libraries. On July 1, 2021, CAT & CAT Jr. will be taken offline and ISearch and ISearch Mobile will replace CAT with Fetch replacing CAT Jr.

For a simple catalog search, Fetch, the new OPAC, will be generally available for the 2021-22 school year.

RemotEDx

By Lori Slingerland, Lead Support Specialist, Library Services

Are there families in your district that cannot afford Internet service? Do you have students living in areas where Internet access is spotty or non-existent? Do you have students and families dealing with Internet coverage issues, access issues, or data caps? Are your teachers searching for instructional materials and professional development opportunities for remote, hybrid, and blended education? Do you have parents looking for resources to help with remote learning? Where do school districts, educators, parents, and caregivers turn to ensure that their learning community has the help it needs? The answer: RemotEDx. RemotEDx is a state-level initiative that launched the first week of November that brings together a unique mix of learning partners from across the state to help schools and districts enhance, expand, and more effectively scale high-quality remote, hybrid, and blended education models. The learning partners include: School and district leaders, ITCs (Informational Technology Centers, like Connect), Educational Learning Centers (ESCs), Internet and broadband connectivity providers, remote education innovators, instructional material creators, inquiry-based learning experts, professional learning designers, and learning network experts. The work being done through RemotEDx to support remote learning during the pandemic will help to improve education and opportunities for more Ohio students for now and into the future.

RemotEDx consists of four components: • Connectivity Champions – The Connectivity champions provide viable assistance to help schools overcome internet connectivity and device barriers. • The Exchange – The Exchange includes high-quality remote education platforms, standards-aligned instructional materials and curricula, and use-case scenarios and professional learning supports. • Support Squad – The Support Squad provides educational support and job-embedded professional learning opportunities. • Network and Learning Academy – The Network and Learning Academy brings all the partners together through a learning community and supports them through a professional learning academy. Resources and services are available to schools at little or no cost and as the Exchange matures, additional tools and resources will be added. Of special note, the ‘Funding Opportunities for Schools and Educational Agencies’ page has become one of the most popular pages on the site. Here you can learn more about grant opportunities available through RemotEDx. To get started, explore the RemotEDx Exchange, located here: https://remotedx.infohio.org/
