Dear friends, Just a few days before our first commencement, our seniors came together for a special morning. In an intimate gathering, parents, benefactors, corporate sponsors, faculty and staff who had surrounded the class of 2011 with care and affection paused to give thanks for our first graduates. Dominic Smith, senior class advisor, invited the assembled students and guests to reflect on the following words— Look at your hands: Think of how they have grown since you were a baby Think of the work they have done over the years Think of the hands they have shaken Think of the tears they have wiped away Think of the day you first wrote your own name with them Think of the hands that have held you— those of your parents, your grandparents Think of those people your hands have held May you go forth into the world with hearts ablaze with your love And hands ready to serve and heal. We rejoice in our first graduates who now begin a new journey. We know they will face challenges. We are confident that they will succeed. And, with God’s grace, they will take the gift of a Cristo Rey Jesuit education, and “with hands ready to serve and heal,” bring hope and love to our city and our world.

Possessing expertise in education, business and philanthropy, the trustees drive Cristo Rey Jesuit’s mission to create opportunities for bright and promising students from disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhoods. The trustees’ belief in this mission is also reflected in their financial commitments to Cristo Rey Jesuit, totaling $7,136,922 during our foundational years. Scholarship Campaign

A private, Jesuit, college preparatory school with a rigorous curriculum coupled with professional work opportunities, where hard-working students from disadvantaged neighborhoods attend for a fraction of the cost of a typical private school tuition. How is it possible? The funding for each student’s education comes from a variety of sources that, together, bring a CRJ education within reach of our families. Each student earns $6,250 per year toward the cost of his or her education by working five days each month through CRJ’s unique Corporate Internship Program. Scholarship benefactors support one or more students by matching that $6,250, annually. Families of CRJ students make an annual contribution based on their financial ability. This funding model removes financial barriers, allowing students to focus on what matters: creating a brighter future for themselves and for their communities.

Leadership Advisory Council The Leadership Advisory Council is comprised of individuals who are committed to supporting Cristo Rey Jesuit High School students with their time, talent and resources. They are passionate about the mission, about their city, and about spreading the word and inspiring others. Members serve on at least one of three committees—Signature Event, Networking and Mentorship, and Fundraising—advocating for CRJ in the community. These individuals volunteer, plan events, introduce others to CRJ, organize community outreach efforts, create business connections, and make a commitment to contribute or fundraise at least $1,500 per person, annually. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School who received college acceptance letters are awarded a special tie in their class colors— silver and purple—during the first of several tie ceremonies from winter through spring. By the end of the school year, every single senior is accepted to college and receives a tie!

Stand Up for Students In April 2011, Cristo Rey Jesuit hosted its third annual Stand Up for Students comedy bash at CENTERSTAGE, a staple of Baltimore’s arts scene. The show opened with a rousing performance by Cristo Rey Jesuit’s step team and guests were treated to the comedic styling of emcee Matt Baetz and feature comedienne Meshelle, “The Indie Mom of Comedy.” The highlight of the evening came when CRJ students Charee Britt, Myesha Green, Tashawnae Pressley and Asia Thomas, dubbed “The Queens of Comedy,” performed stand-up bits to a standing ovation. The event netted an astounding $83,000 for our scholarship program, nearly 40% more than the year before.

CRJ’s annual end-of-the-year Awards Ceremony takes place at Holy

Rosary Church. Students from each grade are honored by their teachers and administrators for excellent performance and progress in academics and civic involvement. Led by Father John Swope, S.J., President, spiritual leaders from students’ places of worship deliver inspiring messages to the congregation. Afterward, the 78 graduating seniors are each presented with a college care package. Funded by more than $9,000 in in kind donations by supporters of CRJ, these packages are filled to the brim with school supplies and dorm room staples to help graduates prepare for the exciting transition to college.

After four years of hard

work at school and at their internships, CRJ’s class of 2011 marches proudly into the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen on a Saturday morning to accept their high school diplomas. More than 1,500 guests witness the groundbreaking and emotional inaugural commencement ceremony.

Financial Position The fiscal year ended on June 30, 2011 with a balanced budget and a modest surplus. The Corporate Internship Program generated $1.6 million, representing 28% of the operating expenses.

Through this campaign, each student receives a scholarship of $6,250 per year; each student contributes annually a similar amount through his or her work in our Corporate Internship Program. As a result of this initiative the total revenue from fundraising for operating needs increased by 22% from fiscal 2010 to fiscal 2011.

During these foundational years, the board of trustees and development office had two primary fundraising goals. The first was to fund capital improvements in order to accommodate our college preparatory school. The second was to make our school financially sustainable. Over the last two years, capital improvements to the school’s two buildings—Healy Hall and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Academic Center—have been completed and were fully funded. During fiscal 2011, our fundraising

While this increase is promising, we are well aware that we have far fewer capital assets than most schools, as Cristo Rey Jesuit does not own the buildings we occupy. Therefore, maintaining a high level of fundraising and a healthy Corporate Internship Program every single year is vital to our sustainability.

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Cristo Rey Jesuit High School was founded by the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 2007 to serve families from disadvantaged Baltimore City neighborhoods. Cristo Rey Jesuit utilizes a longer school day and year, academic assistance, and counseling to prepare students with a broad range of academic abilities for college. All students participate in the Corporate Internship Program through which they finance a significant portion of the cost of their education. Teams of four students job-share entry-level positions in businesses and non-profits throughout the Baltimore area. This unique model, developed at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago (established in 1996), is now in place at 24 Cristo Rey high schools throughout the United States.

Maryland Province Jesuits Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is sponsored by the Maryland Province Jesuits. The Jesuits have been educators for more than 450 years, and have been engaged in education in Baltimore since 1852. Internationally recognized educators, the Jesuits sponsor 53 high schools and 28 colleges and universities in the United States, enrolling more than 200,000 students.
