TITLE OF EXPERIMENT: Germ X Power BACKGROUND: If kids used hand sanitizer, they could prevent many diseases, like staph or pneumonia. Many types of staph are only resistant to some antibiotics(medicines). Water and soap would not prevent the some types of staph because it doesn't have the chemicals that the hand sanitizer contains. Most hand sanitizers have the chemicals to prevent the germs from reproducing and kills them instantly. OBJECTIVE: The students will see the effect of hand sanitizer on hands and how washing your hands is very essential in every day life. HYPOTHESIS:* Students will compare the growth of molds between a normal bread, bread with water, and bread with hand sanitizer and determine which will have more mold. DURATION: 90 min. SET-UP TIME: 15 min. EXPERIMENT’S RUN TIME: 70 min. TAKE-DOWN TIME: 5 min. MATERIALS: -Hand Sanitizer -Bread -Petri-dish or (ziplock bag) -Dropper PROCEDURE: 1) Cut pieces of bread into three separate piece all 3 inches in width and 3 inches in length. (Prepared by the Teacher) 2) Put 15 drops of water on one of the pieces of bread and place it in the petri dish (or Ziploc bag). If using a Ziploc bag leave the bag half way unzipped. 3) Put 15 drops of hand sanitizer on the other piece of bread and place it in the petri dish (or Ziploc bag). If using a Ziploc bag leave the bag half way unzipped. 4) For the last piece of bread DO NOT add any liquid to it and place it in the petri dish (or Ziploc bag). If using a Ziploc bag leave the bag half way unzipped. 5) Leave the two pieces of bread in the petri dishes/Ziploc bags in a DARK and WARM place for about 4 days. 6) After it has been 4 days look at the two pieces of bread and see which one has grown the more molds!

DATA ANALYSIS: 1) Which piece of bread grew the most mold? The water? Hand sanitizer? or one without any liquid on it? Why? 2) What does this show about using proper hand cleaning in order to prevent diseases and germs? 3) What do you think do you should do from now on to keep your hands clean? Tell others around you of the lab to keep you and your friends healthy. Teacher Information -Make the students see what chemicals in the hand sanitizer make germs go away -Get a microscope and watch which types of germs that are on the mold. -Using a microscope, show them the effects of hand sanitizer on germs immediately after use. - Show them how to properly use hand sanitizer and properly washing hands after labs.
