HMS GENERAL HUNTER SHIPWRECK The now famous Southampton beach shipwreck was buried for almost 200 years before its timbers were discovered on the beach. To ensure continued preservation of the fragile remains, the shipwreck remains buried between Morpeth and Palmerston Streets, marked by a protective quarried stone barrier. Volunteers excavated the site in 2001 and 2004. A replica of a large portion of the battle-ready working deck of the HMS General Hunter warship can be viewed at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre. From March 2013 you can be the captain of your own ship with an all new virtual reality experience.

FIREWORKS Lake Huron acts as the backdrop for two of our summer holiday fireworks displays. Canada Day fireworks are scheduled for July 1 at the main beach in Southampton, with our Canadian flag fluttering in the breeze at Dominion Lookout. Labour Day weekend features fireworks at the Port Elgin main beach on September 1. Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce hosts both of these family friendly community events. In addition Saugeen First Nation hosts a great display set over the beautiful Saugeen River at the Amphitheatre on the Sunday night of the May long weekend – May 20th in 2013. 50

SUNSET PIPER During the summer on Friday nights, the sunset piper pipes the sun down at the beach in Southampton. It’s a tradition to head down to the flag, at the west end of Millard Boulevard, at sunset and listen to the sounds of the piper as the sun sinks into Lake Huron. Such a wonderful way to end the day! SCENIC SURROUNDINGS A rewarding way to explore our area and its scenery is to head out for a leisurely wander. We offer picturesque communities and spectacular rural settings. Perhaps enjoy an idyllic picnic on our shoreline or in one of our many parks. It doesn’t matter if you opt to travel by car, motorcycle or bicycle; there are countless treasures to see along the way. Sometimes it’s nice to get off the main roads and just explore at your whim. If you prefer to have a map to navigate your way around, just stop into either of our information offices for an up to date version.

FAMOUS SUNSETS

According to Environment Canada, perfect conditions exist along the shores of Lake Huron for that million dollar sunset. Those conditions, reports Gary May on MyNewWaterfrontHome.com, are: unobstructed westerly views, smog free skies and some of the longest hours of summer sunshine in Canada. This scientific evidence comes from Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips, who has said his favourite place for a “magic moment” sunset is in Port Elgin. Based on these criteria, Saugeen Shores can legitimately claim some of the best sunsets in Ontario! Saugeen Shores 2013 Visitors Guide | www.saugeenshores.ca
