T

he academic year 2012-2013 was another eventful year for Compass International School, Doha.

First I would like to thank the whole school community for making me feel so much at home when I first arrived. It seems such a long time ago and so much has happened since then. I am sure that as you look through this Year Book many happy memories will come flooding back. The Year Book is testament to all the terrific work that has gone on throughout the school this year and it records the many super events and activities that have taken place both inside and outside of the classroom. The school has developed significantly this year and I expect that to continue into next year. I believe the staff I am presently working with are the best colleagues I have ever worked with and I thank them for all of their hard work this year. Through them the school has made significant strides towards becoming an even better school. As I said earlier this year, the school improvement journey will continue into the next year and the years after that to ensure that we are always doing the best for our young learners. The work of the School Advisory Council (SAC) has played a significant part in the school’s development this year. They have provided a much needed ‘sounding board’ and their advice has been invaluable in making sure improvements for our students have happened. I look forward to working with the SAC in future years. There have been many new areas of learning created over the last year on all of the campuses which have enhanced the learning experiences for all of our students. Not many have been straightforward and I thank you for your patience and tolerance as we have tried very hard to get the facilities on stream. I look forward to our students enjoying even better facilities over the next couple of years. It is that time of year that we have to say good-bye to some members of our school community. We wish our Year 11 students every success for the future as they continue their educational journey after taking their IGCSE examinations. We wish those

students who are leaving Compass International School, Doha to attend other schools near and far, every success and we hope they enjoy their learning experiences elsewhere. We also say good-bye to some of our parents and we wish you safe journeys and I thank you for the support you have given the school. We also have to say good-bye to some teachers/ colleagues. What can I say? I do not think your contributions to Compass International School, Doha over the last few years could be measured suitably or accurately. What a job you have done! I wish you every success in the future and I sincerely hope that you receive the same sort of welcome that you gave me when I arrived at CIS, Doha. If you are staying at CIS, Doha and over 84% of you have re-enrolled (thank you!) I look forward to welcoming you back in September. It will be an interesting and challenging year as we continue to grow and pursue our goal of excellence whilst enriching the educational experience that the school has to offer. Our new merger with Nord Anglia Education is excellently timed to support our new build developments and further refurbishments across all of our campuses, the expansion of our Option subjects (Year 10) and our hopes to provide education to students in Years 12 and 13. I wish you an enjoyable break. In the meantime enjoy this Year Book! To colleagues who are staying, I thank you for your continued support for CIS, Doha. It is your dedication and commitment that ensures that our students are ‘Learning Well, Enjoying Life, Exceeding Expectations’. Have a great break and I will see you all in September!

Campus Principals Learning at Madinat Khalifa Campus

I

n January 2013 I joined Compass International School Doha as Campus Principal (Madinat Khalifa) and Head of Primary (Whole School).

During these six months it has been my honour to work with both staff and parents to develop the educational provision here at CISD.

astounded by the professionalism and effort displayed by both teachers and the support staff across our whole school and I thank them for their dedication and commitment. And finally the students! Our school would be nothing without our students. It is a delight to work with so many talented young people. They have raised money for charity; won national awards; swam for their team; produced outstanding assemblies; beaten local schools at football and so much more! Every day I walk down the corridor and I learn

Some highlights of my time here to date… Qatari History was introduced this academic year and we celebrated this important addition to our curriculum during the month of May. Four beautiful displays in the entrance hall shared the understanding that has been developed around this subject. Students have learnt about a wide range of topics including; How Islam developed throughout the Gulf; Islamic Art and all about indigenous plants and animals. Partners in Learning One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been meeting and working with so many parents. It is only through your ideas and suggestions that we know that you are receiving the very best value. We welcome your thoughts and observations and thank you for taking the time to discuss them with us. The partnership with parents is important and we are constantly seeking ways in which you can become involved in your child’s education. Dutch Education Early in 2013 we reinstated the Dutch Advisory Board (DAB). Mr. Stefan Kops also arrived as our interim Dutch Coordinator and together they have been central to the developments of Dutch provision across the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the DAB and Mr. Kops for their tireless efforts to ensure our NTC programme is second to none! Developing First Class Facilities We were delighted when our new swimming pool at Madinat Khalifa and our new teaching block at Rayyan were opened this year! We very much look forward to the completion of the new teaching facilities at MK in early 2014. Staff at CISD are some of the best in the Gulf (if not the world!). They really care about the education of each child and how they can best ensure that every one reaches their potential. We believe in individualising education and ensuring that all are challenged appropriately. I have been

something new. The overall care that our older students provide to the younger children is unmistakable and gives our school a unique atmosphere. It is my absolute pleasure to share on my page some of the outstanding learning that has taken place this year. Congratulations everyone! “By learning you will teach – By teaching you will learn” (Latin proverb)

Learning at Rayyan Campus

I

t is virtually impossible to summarise the tremendous learning which has happened at Rayyan Campus in a few words. There have been celebrations, numerous achievements and, dare we say, just a few frustrations with building permissions, the latter out of our control, but as I look back over the last year I feel that the team here at Rayyan should be proud of the way in which we have developed a nurturing ethos which parents and visitors feel pervades every aspect of what we do here and stand for. Children are at the heart of all we do and we are so proud of the progress they have made under the help, guidance and encouragement of such a committed and motivated staff!!

A few personal highlights... joining EY1 on a trip to the beach finding out about how things change when wet. Little did I realise this involved tipping buckets of water over my head or pretending to be a crocodile; our inspirational “Pied Piper of Rayyan,” featuring all the students and staff at school; watching some of our students taking part in external sporting fixtures; the falcon in school on National Day; the rainbow picnic and of course our “Official Opening” by HRH Prince Michael of Kent. I was so proud of the students who met with him, described their learning and spoke confidently in such a different situation. With every event and with all our visitors, our students have been the best possible ambassadors for Rayyan Campus and for CISD! Few principals have the opportunity to open a new campus and therefore I have felt extremely privileged, along with the team here, to be instrumental in our d e ve l o p m e n t . Our students are fantastic, our staff sensational and our parents, absolutely brilliant. We have a terrific team all committed to helping your children, our students to become independent and motivated learners with the necessary skills to face life in the ever changing society. We have established a firm foundation to build on in subsequent years and wish Rayyan a continued happy future, with happy learners, enjoying life and exceeding all our expectations in all aspects of life!

Learning at Gharaffa Campus

R

eflecting on this past year, I realise how much learning has been packed in for our students and staff and what an exciting year it has been for us all. Our aim and vision has been to provide the highest quality, learning-focused environment in which learning is irresistible, engaging and enjoyable and a setting where pupils make real choices and develop positive self-esteem, high moral values and a lifelong love of learning. Our teachers and support staff have worked endlessly this year to enable pupils to develop academic, creative, social and emotional skills, knowledge and understandings which are flexible, adaptable and transferable. We believe that in developing these, our students will be prepared to meet the unpredictable future demands of our ever-changing world.

Throughout the year, there have been some amazing learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Our active, enquiry-based learning experiences create an opportunity for pupils to make new discoveries, build links between existing and new knowledge and to learn and practice skills. Our collaborative and co-operative learning activities continue to be a key factor in developing children’s understandings. Students have been provided with opportunities to learn with and from each other, enabling them to solve problems and construct meanings at a higher level. With our highly trained teachers and skilled learning support staff working in partnership alongside pupils, we believe that we have supported and challenged learning in a real and meaningful way, throughout the year. Our students are always encouraged to talk about their learning to their teachers, peers and parents. I am always delighted to hear about what, how and why students are learning as I visit classes throughout the school. The progress and attainment that I have seen in all age groups and areas of the curriculum throughout the year has been excellent and we are all extremely proud of our learning. It has been a real privilege to lead the Campus this year and I have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, commitment and support of our students and staff and parents. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our whole school community and I very much look forward to leading the learning forward at our Gharaffa Campus next year.

eptember 2012 brought a whole new cohort of children to Mrs. Kavanagh’s Early Years 1 class and thus started their school life here at Compass International School. At the beginning, we all found it quite challenging. There was lots of new learning taking place, getting to know our new classmates, learning how to look after our own belongings and settling into a new routine. We soon found our feet. Our first unit of study was All About Me. We had fun making a self-portrait and reminiscing on when we were babies and how much we have grown up since then and thinking about all the things we can now do, independently. Sand and Water was our next unit. We went on a visit to the beach and learned about various sea creatures. We had tremendous fun exploring the properties of sand and water in our outdoor play area. Before we knew it, Term 2 was upon us and we delved into our favourite unit Let’s Pretend. We dressed up as fairytale characters, performed puppet shows for our friends, listened to traditional stories and retold fairytales. We were sad when we had to hang up

Mrs. Martina Kavanagh Martina Kavanagh our Princely crowns and princess dresses. However, we soon became engrossed in our next unit of study, Changes. Here we learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly and frog. We even got to make ice-lollies and enjoyed eating them before they melted. Bears is proving to be a popular unit. We have set up a bear cottage in our class and we enjoy preparing porridge for Daddy, Mummy and Baby bear. Fluffy our class bear is thrilled to visit all of his classmates homes, where he has been made to feel very welcome and partakes in wonderfully exciting adventures every day. We all enjoy reading his teddy diary to find out what he has been up to lately.

e have had a wonderful year in EY1 Blanch. At first everything was very new, with some of us learning to speak English for the very first time and never having been to school before. But we quickly made friends and learned the routines of school. We learnt how to share, get along with others and how to care for our own belongings. During the year we have been part of many fun and exciting events such as the Rainbow Family Picnic, our trip to the Intercontinental Beach, a Rainy Day at Compass Doha, Sports Day, Teddy Bear’s Parade, Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Fairytale Dress Up Day. In Term 2, we started learning Jolly Phonics and to write our names. Now we love writing about what we did on the weekend and always try to write the sounds we can hear in our words. We have learnt so many things that we would need a whole book to list them all but here are some favourite memories of Early Years One from the children themselves:-

t has been a privilege to welcome the youngest members of our Compass family this year with the early days of getting to know each other a very distant memory. What progress the children have made. As the year draws to a close I see independent, happy and confident children who enjoy a love for learning. Testimony to this being their participation in the school production - It was very hard to believe that some of our class had still not celebrated their 4th birthday!

It has been a tremendous learning journey. We have gained lots of new friends from all over the world, made (and ate, ice lollies), brought the rain to Doha (and then, it seems left it there!), spent a glorious morning together on the beach - the list is endless!

Adham Shohman Then the dragon decided to show! A huge imaginative adventure began, taking the children further into their imagination than could ever have been planned. A flurry of activity ensued with dragon chocolate traps, disguised hunts, messages written and even a dragon catching flying machine built to transfer us to magical places. Certainly learning through play at its very best! It has been such a busy year of learning and we have packed so much in. For sure it has been a fantastic time for us all. I certainly have enjoyed my last year at Compass with such a delightful, energetic class. Watching them grow into strong and independent people has been a great privilege. I have really enjoyed being a part of their learning journey, laughing and learning with them and enjoying our year together.

e commenced our short yet exciting experience in Early Years by learning to make friends with our international group of classmates. The pupils were all new to Compass which presented the opportunity to learn all about ourselves, our school and each other. We were engaged in a variety of activities. We loved dressing up, role playing superheroes and characters from fairy tales. We explored our environment, in the sand and water play area. We got very busy in our construction corner, building and constructing houses. We expressed our creativity by painting our bears, coloring to form patterns, pictures of our weekends. In our IPC unit on Bears we learnt to differentiate between real bears and teddy bears. Working cooperatively we built a house for our bears. Painting, and replicating the colors of our very own teddy bears was one of our favorite activities. This fun filled unit culminated with us taking our teddy bears on a picnic. We were extremely proud of the invitations we made to the picnic.

Next we were searching for treasure! Islands were made, pirates visited and galleons were built. The children had a wonderful time learning pirate language, building pirate camps and making Mrs Edwards walk the plank. We were so lucky to have Mrs Hutchinson to help us learn about plants and animals. The children enjoyed our trip to the farm and the cute, fluffy rabbits were a big hit. “Shop till you drop” was our catch phrase for our next IPC unit. With shopping for groceries, clothes, pets, toys and eco items we has lots of practice using coins and learning addition and subtraction methods. Other highlights of our year were our royal visit, the opening of our new building and all taking part in the school Production The Pied Piper of Rayyan.

am so proud of my class and we have all achieved such a lot this year. I asked children to reflect on what they enjoyed the most and here is what they said.

The map project was enjoyed by lots of children. Zephyr liked drawing the shape of the island while Rosa preferred the chance to use her imagination. Daman liked having free choice. Collecting stickers is liked by many as we enjoy being successful. Emilie likes shiny stickers for getting one more right than last time. Nicole likes a range of stickers from silly to cute, it is just good fun collecting them. Using the internet to research information about dinosaurs was popular. Abdulrahman even saw a picture of two dinosaurs fighting when he used google images. Information was gathered by Abbes and Arwa on the diet and weight of a large range of dinosaurs. All of us enjoyed visiting Katara for a double treat. We visited an exhibition about arab women in sports. Later on Feline, Khaled, Raza and Wade sat in red velvet chairs and enjoyed the orchestra at The Opera House. Bob the Builder was the conductor! Skye and Camille wanted to say that the 3 – D dinosaur project was a bit tricky and even gooey at times. Spinach green was a popular colour and we had tremendous confidence that they would all turn out great. Sofie, Joyce and Fahad are excited about our assembly which hasn’t even happened yet! We have chosen to show each of our interests to the whole school. Sofie wants a nature appreciation part, Fahad wants to demonstrate how to play soccer meanwhile Joyce wants to talk about animals. e have had a fantastic year of learning in Miss Charles’s class. We started the year with our IPC unit ‘Rainforests’. We had lots of fun creating our very own tropical rainforest in our classroom and our parents helped. We loved learning about all the different animals, tribes and plants and got to paint our faces so we looked like real rainforest creatures. “My favorite part was making rainforest smoothies and painting my face like a tiger!” Aliza.

We have also had great fun learning in our maths and English. Miss Charles has helped us to learn through lots of new, fun games and we have also enjoyed using ICT to help us too. “I like to play mathletics as much as I can, it’s fun and I am getting better at my times tables and division!’’ Youssef. e have had a fantastic fun-filled year! We have worked hard to exceed in our own expectations, played with enthusiasm and laughter, and learned to get up and try again when we fail. We have made new friends and shared many happy moments as a class. Lots of new students joined our class and school this year, but settled in quickly and soon became part of Compass as a family. Everyone worked really hard to improve their learning and thanks should go to all the parents for their wonderful help and support!! Throughout the year we have worked on many exciting IPC projects, worked on improving our writing in English and learned our times tables off by heart in Maths and many more. From our Rainforest Café, where we sold delicious smoothies and cupcakes, we’ve made enough money to adopt two tigers, Tiger and Rani, from the Lion Park in South Africa, for life. We loved going on trips, especially to the Park of the Islamic Art Museum where we drew lovely pictures of the skyline and Céramique Café where each one of us painted our own plate. hat an amazing class and a wonderful year. We started the year with just three students on the first day (Isobella, Mads and Cedric). Our class began to grow. Initially, we worked closely with Miss Gilbert, Mr Cowie and the Year Four and Five students. As the year went on and we welcomed more students into the class, we moved into our own (very pink) classroom. Finally of course, we moved into our fabulous roomy, new classroom. The students have shared some of their favourite memories from the year. Certainly our production, the Pied Piper of Rayyan, was a definite highlight for me. However, what I will always remember about this class is their enthusiasm and love of learning, which commenced on day one and has continued over the year.

You have made this year one of never ending successes! The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are. It’s time to leave Primary! I wish you all the best as you head to Secondary School. I will miss sharing your excitement for each new day!

Shivaanee. I had fun on the water dip for the very first time at Gondolania. It almost felt as if we were flying off the tracks. I learnt that as the ride goes up Potential Energy is stored. After that Gravity takes over and Kinetic Energy is released. Julie. Buddies! Playing with the little kids; helping with their learning; it was a most enjoyable time! Hannah-Sophia. This year I have learned so much! Thanks to my teacher Mrs Burchell, I’ve improved hugely in all my subjects. Caitlin. e have had such an amazing and fulfilling year. From the very beginning we worked well together, the children naturally supported each other and learned from each other too. New students joined us, bringing different ingredients to the mix. We now have a perfect recipe, but sadly, this particular recipe is now complete. (Marion Derham) At Fujairah Camp it was so much fun; we did so many awesome activities! When you are in Year 6 you will love it! (Johanne, Kazuma) The trip to Fujairah was the most amazing thing I’ve done in my whole life. I’m never going to forget it! (Magda, Ella) My favourite event from Year 6 was our first swimming lesson. I love swimming and we were one of the first people to swim in the new pool. (Mauro) For Qatar National Day we made a huge picture “The Windows of Qatar”. It was brilliant, we won second place out of the whole school and were awarded a trophy! (Sophie, Sven) This year I enjoyed our trip to Gondolania the most because the rides were amazing and I learned a lot about forces. (Tim, Hasnah, Amy, Zsofia, Elisa, Karim, Amelia, David) At our Year 6 Science Fair there were lots of interesting models that I liked. (Marwa) I most enjoyed Gondolania, The Science Fair and making our own movies. Sadly, we won’t be able to do the movies again this year. (Taqwa) I really enjoyed World Maths Day because everybody participated and tried to beat last year’s score. I had the highest score in my class and Kazuma won the Year 6 BIG MATHS BEAT THAT competition. (Olamide) I really like my Year 6 class, I have fantastic friends and they’re very funny! eing in Year 8 has been absolutely awesome. Out of 6 topics we studied in Science ‘rocks’ was the one we all liked the most. What made it so enjoyable and delicious were the experiments with chocolate! Talking about rocks, in geography we looked at rocks and their link to volcanic hazards. We studied volcanoes and earthquakes and their causes and effects. Mr Hannah took us back hundreds of years to learn about the French Revolution and Napoleon. He even gave us a mini concert whilst singing the national anthem of France. As part of English, we were given the task of researching the Elizabethan period to link in with our study of Shakespeare and our class novel. We created an Elizabethan fayre where we experienced the food, games, medicine and entertainment of the time; putting into context the literature we were studying. All together this was definitely a year to remember. We all learned a lot and had a great time doing it.

e are delighted to see an exciting increase in the number of students participating in both Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE courses this year. Reflecting on the year, many of our students have commented on how much they have enjoyed the learning in subjects which really interest them. Sports Day proved an occasion for our IGCSE students to incorporate their learning practically; taking a leading role in the organisation and management of the day. Our senior students impressed a number of sporting scouts who came to observe our talented cohort. The Talent Show was an ideal opportunity for our seniors to continue their links with junior students; our winners being a senior and junior student duo, Jack and Janeena. Many of the IGCSE subjects have a more hands on approach, with some students, who shall remain nameless, particularly enjoying dissection in Biology. Our musical students have regularly entertained us at assembly with their amazing voices and instruments. In English, students have relished getting outside to make descriptive compositions more ‘real’. Art students have impressed with a number taking external examinations a year early.

ompass International School has always placed great importance on learning Arabic Language and Culture. The Arabic Language is the pot of traditional Arabic thought and a mirror of the Arab civilization. This is reflected in the teaching, learning and communication between our Arabic teachers and students in Compass. Our Arabic Department, led by Mrs. Enaam El Taweel, has developed a range of strategies for teaching Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qatar History. These are guided by the standards set by the Supreme Education Council, Qatar. The latest methods of learning and teaching are used, including the use of modern technology such as the e-book, recently launched by the SEC. We truly believe in life-long learning and our teachers have access to a range of professional development opportunities. In developing our teacher’s skills to the highest level, we believe that our students are provided with the best learning experience possible. As with all of our subject areas, formal and informal assessments are used to inform our teachers of current levels and future learning targets. It is by using the information gained from these assessments that teachers plan next steps and prepare appropriate activities and opportunities, in order to ensure individual progress for every child. We highly value our partnerships with parents in order to share this information and work together to encourage confident and enthusiastic learners. Compass International School places a high emphasis on teaching our Muslim students Islamic Studies, in recognition that Arabic is the language of the Holy Koran, honoured by

Sahar Natsheh God for choosing it for his Holy Book. This year, our students attended the Global Koran Competition, under the care of the SEC, and all achieved impressive results. Our school is extremely proud of their achievements in this important area. Qatari History and Citizenship has also been high on our agenda this year, in order to inform all students of the importance of Qatar’s heritage and the essential customs and traditions which are part of the culture of the State of Qatar. Our Arabic and Class teachers have worked together to ensure that an exciting and interesting programme is delivered throughout the school to our Arabic and non-Arabic speaking students. All students have visited key places across Qatar, such as the Museum of Islamic Art, in order to make learning interactive and relevant.

Our whole school have particularly enjoyed the various celebrations that the Arabic Department have organised throughout the year. The joyful atmosphere of Eid Al Adha was celebrated with the distribution of sweets throughout the school. We had a fabulous celebration to acknowledge the importance of Qatar National Day, with our girls and boys participating in the songs and dances. One of the highlights of the year was our Arabic Night in March which was attended by hundreds of parents and children. During the evening they enjoyed delicious traditional Qatari food, singing and dancing. Handicrafts and customs such as henna painting and Sadu were also on show. What a super evening! The Arabic Department is committed to achieving the best educational outcomes for all of our students and strive for them to Learn Well, Enjoy Life and Exceed Expectations. onjour! We have had an extremely enjoyable and successful year in French across all three campuses and this is reflected in the progress and confidence of our French learners. We use a range of teaching and learning styles so that all students are included; from singing songs to performing role plays, from cooking to preparing PowerPoint presentations. All of our students are encouraged and supported in improving their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as learning about the culture of the Frenchspeaking world. “In French I think I have improved greatly and have been taught lots of interesting things. I enjoy it very much. Ollie, Y6

By Nukaiya

Rayyan Campus

With a new school, new students and a new EAL teacher, it has been an amazing year at Rayyan campus! Our Y1-5 students have made unbelievable progress in their learning since they first joined us, many of them as non-English speakers! Year 1 wowed us with their drama skills and clear presentation when they acted out the story of Red Riding Hood for assembly. Year 2 focused on non-fiction when they shared some facts about wolves. And Years 4 & 5 used what they have been learning about past tenses to present a news show. Mrs Gibson

Madinat Khalifa - Primary EAL

There has been a terrific amount of learning going on in EAL at Madinat Khalifa this year. All the year groups have enjoyed using the internet to increase their vocabulary, sentence word order and points of English grammar. We have played a variety of learning activities to develop our spelling and general IPC knowledge. We have also used our learning booklets to improve reading and comprehension skills. Mike Glover

What super learning has happened this year!!!! We can now write using many levels of punctuation, great sentence openers and lots of creative WOW words. We have read many books and have loved Mrs Wishy Washy, by Joy Cowley! The EALers are great speakers and listeners too!! Our learning experiences come from reading loads of books, doing lots of guided writing and playing games. Lorraine Maher The Year 4 group has worked with great enthusiasm throughout the year. They’ve mastered food vocabulary while making fruit kebabs, created weather word mobiles to show word association, improved their fluency through chants and even published their own books for the library. All students have demonstrated excellent progress in their English skills. Keep up the good work! Mrs Rosie Estall

Art and Design

here have been lots of exciting learning opportunities this year in the Art and Design department. We have enjoyed much collaboration as part of our IMYC Units and experienced live projects, exhibitions and competitions. In term one and two, the year seven students embarked on IMYC units inspired by the themes of “Celebration” and “Collaboration” Students used imagery from key figures in history including Spartacus, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and Emiline Pankhurst and used lino cutting techniques and tools and look at the process of printmaking and lino cutting. Students also made masks individually and in pairs to celebrate an event from their home countries. The results were fantastic. Students from different year groups have entered various competitions this year. Yousef Al Hammadi, 7A, won the Toyota Dream car competition and we have 8 students currently collaborating with VCU’s Fashion Department to create recycled outfits for World Environment Day in June. CISD has been very lucky to have built up strong partnerships with our local Charities here in Qatar over the last few years.. The Art ECA, Art through Enterprise, in term one, created artworks for public auction to raise money for 2nd Chance Rescue. This term they are making Learning Diary covers, and other felt products, entrepreneurial skills in product development, manufacturing, target markets and marketing techniques to sell their work in the public domain. We have raised over 11,000qr so far. Year 8 classes started the year with a packaging unit to design a repeat patterned bag for a shoe shop. The inspiration for this was taken from pencil tonal drawings of shoes which were then made more abstract and simplified using full drop and half drop repeat pattern techniques. The classes then moved onto a paper jewellery unit looking at contemporary jewellery techniques with scoring, folding, pleating and creation of sculptural forms. At present students are working on Still Life Food Units with South East Asian food items and have been lucky to collaborate with the W Hotel, to exhibit our work as part of South East Asian Cultural Week outside Spice Market Restaurant. The work is very mature and all students should be very proud of themselves. Year 9 students have embarked on various units this year such as Mask Design, the Built Environment, observational drawing techniques and sculptural form/vessel creation in collaboration with Qatar History.

This is the second year of IGCSE Art and Design exams for the current cohort and I am extremely pleased with the amount of effort and work all students placed on their Observational and Design Units which were incredibly professional looking. The Year 10 IGCSE cohort know just how much work is necessary for each unit and are currently underway with a Product Design Unit for a restaurant. We have creative, imaginative students in CISD and it has been an absolute pleasure to showcase the amazing work not only in school but in various locations in Qatar. All in all, another exciting year in Art and Design Department at Compass International School!

s our school continues to grow, 2012-13 has been a productive and exciting year for the music department. At the beginning of the year, Year 5 pupils at Madinat Khalifa enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to a global music recording project, Voices around the World 2012. This was an exciting, not for profits project aimed at linking youth choirs and vocal groups around the world through music. Our pupils recorded the song in two parts and this was consequently released globally in December 2012.

In October, 2012, a group of our MK Year 5 Choir performed as the opening act on centre stage at the Doha Tribecca Film Festival. A number of pupils were interviewed on stage and explained that our song highlighted a desire for world peace and unity. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school. In December, 2012, with just a few days to prepare, a number of pupils from our school decided to learn a song by British singer/ songwriter, Sami Yusuf. Sami Yusuf is a British musician with Middle Eastern roots who has a following of millions across the world. His style is essentially a mixture of modern English and Arabic music rooted in his faith. Sami has raised large amounts of money for global charities through the sale of his music. In preparation for his forthcoming concert in Qatar, auditions were held for talented young people. Three children were to be chosen to perform in his concert. A few of our pupils went along for auditions and despite fierce competition, one pupil, Mohammed Al Manna, was selected to represent Qatar. A rigorous daily rehearsal schedule followed for a week after school. Finally, on Thursday, 6th December, the event took place. Many pupils, parents and staff attended to offer support amidst a crowd of over five thousand. Mohammed maintained great confidence and composure throughout his performance. It was a proud day for everyone.

Qatar National Day was celebrated this year at Rayyan with an introduction to Arabic music.

Pupils at Rayyan have been exploring sound through the purchase of a brand new full range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Jessica Butterworth, Year 10 Madinat Khalifa pupil, recently participated in a royal performance at Katara for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Duchess of Cornwall.

Musicians from our secondary and primary schools were delighted to participate in the musical performances for HRH Prince Michael of Kent on 26 March, 2013 at the Official Opening of the Al Rayyan building.

2013 marked the formation of the Madinat Khalifa Primary Choir at Compass. This is made up of a selection of pupils from Years 4-6 who were auditioned earlier in the year. The choir’s current project is the 2013 global CD recording, Unshakeable, a combined effort by schools from around the world.

Productions and Musical Events ‘The Snow Queen’

F

ollowing a fortnight of very intensive rehearsals, hours of scenery-painting by our talented students and ArtDepartment, and meticulous construction of props by the husband of Yr 3 teacher Annelien van Wyk, students from Year 1 to Year 10 at Madinat Khalifa joined forces at the end of Term 1 to put on an outstanding performance of the musical ‘The Snow Queen’. The story… Set in a cold and frosty land, this is a traditional tale of good against evil. The beautiful but terrifying Snow Queen, together with her frightening sprites, has a wicked plan to kidnap a boy and freeze his heart. But who is her chosen victim? She spies a boy called Kay, who lives with his foster sister Gerda and their Gran, in a poor but cosy cottage. Luckily for Kay, his kind-hearted sister sets off on a journey to rescue him, armed only with a beautiful rose. Along the way she meets some amazing characters, such as crows, flowers, snowflakes and trees that talk (!), playful urchins, a mysterious flower witch, an argumentative prince and princess, together with their noble footman and servants, tough but ultimately soft-hearted robbers and robber’s maiden, an adorable speaking reindeer, the wise witch of Finland, and of course the beautiful snow dancers! This is a story that melts even the coldest of hearts!! The cast firstly put on two sterling dress-rehearsal performances of the show to students of all three campuses – Rayyan, Gharaffa and Madinat Khalifa. They then delighted their parents the following evening with their superb singing, delightful dancing and amazing acting, which had the audience captivated from start to finish! We thank all the students, staff and parents who took part or helped out behind the scenes. This really was a whole school effort which we look forward to repeating again in the not-too-distant future!

‘Scheherezade’

T

his year, Gharaffa Drama club chose to perform Scheherezade. Children from Years 1 to 6 worked extremely hard, learning songs, lines and dance routines in preparation for the performance. As well as the actors and dancers, many students were involved in prop making, set painting, costume design and programme and poster design. It really was a huge team effort which resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining show and a wonderful learning experience for all children involved.

The Pied Piper of ‘Rayyan’

S

tudents at ‘Rayyan’ campus produced a fantastic performance of music and Drama in May. The whole School of 167 students; including 100 early years students, dazzled their parents and proudly presented their hard work to an audience. RATS! BIG, FAT RATS! They are everywhere and no one can work out how to get rid of them! The story is loosely based on ‘The Pied Piper of Hamlyn’ by Robert Browning and was adapted especially for ‘Rayyan’ students.

PE Events and Sports Days Sports Day 2013 - Y3-11

N

orth, South, East and West descended onto the track to face each other in the ultimate athletic battle of 2013. The stadium was electric as the athletes prepared themselves. The primary students took to the field to compete in the multi- events section, where they had to perform in 14 different athletic events including the javelin, long jump, triple jump and mini hurdles. The secondary limbered up on the track ready to start the 1200m. After the first event, it was clear there would be a close contest between all the houses. News of the talented compass athletes quickly spread across Qatar and as the athletes took their places on the 100m start line. We had visitors!! –several Qatari National and Olympic Sprinters came to scout our students. Several students have been selected to train with Al Ahli athletics club and the Qatar athletics team. The superb efforts from the students resulted in truly outstanding performances creating an intense competition between the house teams. The high participation rates reflected the fun and enjoyment the students have experienced during the Athletics unit this year and to experience such an event at the world class facility with Olympic athletes watching was a wonderful way to end the season. My gratitude, as always, goes out to firstly the parents for their support and assistance on the day, secondly to the students for their superb efforts and exceptional behaviour and finally to the wonderful staff at Compass who without them an event on this scale could never go ahead. Final results of the day: 1st – West, 2nd – East, 3rd – South, 4th - North

S

tudents dressed in their house team colours from our 3 campuses (Madinat Khalifa, Gharaffa & Rayaan ) to take part in our 2nd Inter-house sports day for our younger students. With every child taking part in all the activities it was a fun packed event. The performance from the students was fantastic and every point achieved counted towards the close contest of the house cup. Events included the Speed bounce, Long jump, Javelin throw, Balance beam, Beanbag throw, Skipping as well as many others. Students form Year 6 Gharaffa assisted on the day as Event leaders with responsibility for scoring each event. Thank you firstly to the parents for their support on a very hot day, secondly to the staff for their assistant and enthusiasm and lastly to the students for their energy and efforts in creating a competitive and fun event. Highlights of the day were plentiful and here are just some of the pictures to illustrate the fun and great performances the students achieved.

Super Learning Events Book Week

I

n October, children at all three campuses celebrated Book Week. The theme for the week was Heroes and Heroines. English lessons for the week have all been based on learning about different heroes and heroines. The children were entertained with a presentation by visiting UK poet and rapper Donavan Christopher. He worked with several classes on composing their own raps about ‘School is Cool!’ The younger children wore their pyjamas and brought teddies for our Reading Rendezvous. Mums and Dads came in to read favourite stories in class. It was lovely

Maths Week Maths week this year was held in March and was entitled ‘It’s all about shapes’. As the name suggests, children across our school learned about 2D and 3D shapes, focusing especially on Islamic Patterns and shapes that can be found in and around Qatar. To this end, children had great fun creating patterns, investigating the shapes of prominent buildings in Doha and even designing and constructing their own to fit in with the Doha landscape. During this week students also participated in ‘World Maths Day’

to see children cuddled down enjoying so many fantastic books! Everyone needed to have a book handy, as every time the hooter went the children had to Drop Everything and Read! The grand finale was on the last day, when all children took part in the character parades. There were so many Super heroes and heroines on show! Lots of superpowers were on display, even the teachers had a few tricks up their sleeves! The children had so much fun whilst learning about Heroes and Heroines, it was a great learning experience where books have really come alive! where they competed against children from all over the world in mental calculation races. Our aim was to beat our previous best total and...we more than doubled it with Compass students answering 117 198 questions correctly! This is a phenomenal total. Well done everyone!

Brain Friendly learning Day

B

rain Friendly learning is an important part of IPC philosophy and our curriculum. Children in Years 3 and 5 complete a 3 week IPC Unit on the brain and how we learn which helps them not only in their daily lives but also in the future as lifelong learners. At Compass, we have a special day devoted to brain awareness and research which helps children to understand what they need to do to learn well; healthy eating, rest, exercise, staying hydrated, having fun, enjoying school, individual learning styles and preferences and being stress free are all important factors in learning.

Primary Trips Year 5 Desert Camp

O

n the 20th March, Year 5 set off in a convoy of Landcruisers to the annual Desert Camp. The journey began with some impressive dune-bashing, definitely not for the faint hearted! On arrival at the camp the children had lunch and prepared their beds before heading to the beach for a fantastic sand castle building competition. Following that they swam in the sea which was a lovely temperature and splashed in the pool. After a quick change, the afternoon’s sports programme began with children participating in sand boarding, volleyball, rounders, football and finally having a bounce in the bouncy castle. It was now time for the ‘budding stars’ to make their final preparations for the Talent Show. After a sumptuous meal, the show began and everyone was amazed at the array of talent on offer. Two singers, Midas and Marlo finally won the day with their tuneful renditions of current pop songs. The disco then began and the Year 5’s, who still had some energy left, enjoyed ‘strutting their stuff’ on the ‘dance floor’. The evening ended with some fantastic myths and legends being created by Mr Eddie round the bonfire before everyone headed to their tents to try to get some sleep. At 6am the boys were revitalized, ready for a game of football, sand boarding, a scavenger hunt and a last jump on the bouncy castle. After breakfast and pack up, it was time to leave this fantastic location, tired but happy. Many new friendships were formed and the children behaved admirablydeveloping their IPC Personal Goals. One child summed it up when he said ’It was awesome, the best day of my life!”

Year 6 Outdoor Adventure trip to Fujairah What do you get if you take 50 students on a plane to Fujairah in the UAE?

E

xuberance, excitement, joyful squealing, endless questions and nervous anticipation! That’s how the Year 6 Outdoor Adventure camp began.

From the moment we arrived at the camp the children had amazing fun. The activities were designed to challenge. The most fearsome was the enormous climbing wall which is the very first sight for everyone as one enters the camp grounds. This imposing giant of a wall stops everyone dead in their tracks. But once kitted up in harnesses and safety helmets, the children proved that they are up for the challenge. With great agility, everyone clambered up to the very top! The team support and encouragement from the ground added the inspiration needed over the tricky bits! Mountain biking is a favorite as everyone peddled over the bumps and lumps that make up a Wadi basin. The looming mountains added to the excitement‌. And the stiff wobbly legs at the end! The GPS tracking through the Wadi is another favourite as the children use the GPS machines to hunt down clues in a giant open air treasure hunt. No camp trip is complete with water. Snorkeling in the ocean is a definite highlight... especially spotting a giant turtle gently cruising past. Archery, an Obstacle course, and the Dhow trip added to all the fun and excitement. Jumping off the Dhow into the ocean remains one of the best experiences for most of the children. Team building games really showed just how amazing the Compass children are‌ they live and put into action the IPC personal Goals, in particular cooperation, respect, thoughtfulness. The children are fearless and great risk takers. This was a trip to talk about for the rest of this year!

Well done to all the Year 6 students for rising to the challenges, digging in deep to fine the courage and excelling at every activity presented.

Secondary Trips Compass Students touch down in ‘Turkey Space Camp’

A

t the end of March this year, 21 students from year 7 took part in the 4th annual ‘Turkey Space Camp’, in which they enjoyed a fun and packed program as usual. The students participated in a range of exciting activities from building and programming robots, rocket design and launching, to experiencing zero-gravity in space simulation machines.

They also explored ‘Ephesus’ an ancient Greek city, on the coast of Ionia, near present-day Selçuk, Izmir Province. Here they saw the Temple of Artemis which was one seven wonders of the ancient world. One of the highlights of the trip was the annual visit that students made to our partner school in a village in the local area, where they received a royal welcome. Our students exchanged gifts and enjoyed a performance of a traditional dance by the school’s students. Both teachers and students had an experience of a life and the space camp coordinators were really impressed by our students for their excellent behaviour and participation. Compass students even appeared in a local newspaper article. Mr Bartlett and Mrs Paratian are looking forward to receiving another group of potential astronauts from Compass next year. If you would like to read more about our adventures follow the link to our ‘Turkey Space Camp’ blog ( http://turkeyspacecampcis. blogspot.com/)

Vietnam Trip

I

n October 2012, 17 students and two teachers took part in a Community Service and Exploration Project for 8 days to Vietnam. In Hanoi, highlights included a visit to the Ho Chi Minh museum and mausoleum, the bustling street markets and the Museum of Ethnology. A four-hour journey then took us to Mai Chau, near the Laotian border, for

the community service house building project. We were tasked with building a house for a family in need and had to carry out a huge amount of work which was completed after 2 days. We were then treated to a celebratory evening of song and dance by the villagers to thank us for our efforts. The group then headed to the World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay, where we stayed overnight on a private-sleeper boat, cruised around Ha Long Bay, visited caves, went kayaking and even had a student and staff Karaoke evening! Before leaving for Doha the following day, we presented signed CIS Doha t-shirts to our tour guides Huang and Hong as a huge thank you for all they had done. A truly inspiring adventure!

Royal Visitors

M

arch 2013 was a very special month for meeting and greeting various royal dignitaries for the students of CISD. At the beginning of the month, a number of students and staff went to the British Embassy to meet HRH Prince Charles and HRH the Duchess of Cornwall, though some of our youngest students from Rayyan Campus came back to tell their friends they had met the King and Queen. Prince Charles came to our group and asked various questions but was surprised and delighted to know that we had given up our weekend to welcome him!

T

uesday 26th March 2013 was certainly another day to remember! Compass International School Doha was delighted to welcome HRH Prince Michael of Kent to open the new ten class, purpose- built teaching block at our Rayyan Campus. The red carpet was laid, an Arabic tent erected for refreshments and a fabulous and varied musical programme to entertain our illustrious visitors was put on. Our students were the perfect ambassadors for our school and spoke confidently about learning as well as conducting HRH around the site and discussing their work. Prince Michael spoke extensively to students and parents who all expressed their delighted in the new facilities which will help learning to continue apace.

Student and Eco Council Madinat Khalifa Student Council

T

he Student Council at Madinat Khalifa have been delighted to continue to support the schools chosen charity in Sri Lanka, raising over 10,000Qr for this worthwhile cause. In addition to non-uniform days, the Student Council sold vouchers for crazy hair, computer time at break, and most popular of all, passes to avoid homework. They have also kept the students updated on the plans for the new school building and asked for ideas on how the new courtyard could be designed. Daily, the student councillors are responsible for taking out the playground equipment and returning it to class at the end of every break. Jahedur Ali

Gharaffa Student Council Our ‘ student-elected’ Student Council at Gharaffa have done a wonderful job this year. They started by electing their roles and responsibilities, sharing the load of Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer between them. All members also shared responsibilities at break times, which included: • Shopping for appropriate playground equipment to meet our students needs and requests • checking that toys and equipment are treated with respect and shared fairly • monitoring that all pupils are being included at break-time Evie Ruis • mediating with any pupil disagreements to come to a harmonious solution They also and came up with some great ideas for fundraising for our Sri Lanka appeal. One of their highlights was receiving a letter from President Barack Obama of the USA commending our Julia van Oosten Cruz work and commitment to world peace and to making life a better place for all. This was in response to Liam Brett’s letter to Mr Obama, explaining the role and vision of the Student Council. Each and every one have been amazing ambassadors Maya Barghouti for our school this year and we are truly proud of their achievements.

Rayyan Student Council

H

aving a Student Council was one of many firsts this year at the Rayyan Campus. The Councilors were nominated and elected at the beginning of the year by their peers. A highlight at the beginning of the year was the Teddy Bear Picnic. The student councilors ran a ‘Guess the Name of the Teddy Bear’ competition to raise money for our Sri Lankan charity. Another highlight was our shopping trip to buy playground toys for the students to use during break time. The students were a pleasure to work with. They willingly gave up break times to attend meetings and Fiore de Schacht Lana Khateeb Sepideh Sagheb Abdelrahman Abou Rahma Cedric Tiruchelvam were always ready to share their ideas.
