1. Could you share about your background and how you get to know about JCI?

After completing my Master's Degree from the UK and working for a few years in KL, I decided to start my business in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I heard about JCI Sandakan when I was in secondary school. I learned more about JCI through JCI Sandakan Past President and eventually I was referred to join JCI Tanjung Aru in March 2011. Since then, I expand my networks effectively and made many quality friends around Sabah and beyond. Along the JCI journey, I met my soulmate Lenny Yap, who became my wife in 2016.

2. What motivated you to take the role of JCI APDC Development Officer?

I am inspired by the quote "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give". I have been transformed from a business owner to a purposeful entrepreneur through 11 years of leadership development in JCI. I always wish to learn and contribute more on the international platform. I am honoured to earn the opportunity to serve as 2021-2022 JCI Asia Pacific Development Council Development Officer.

3. What is the most valuable experience in your JCI APDC journey?

《孔子·论语》:三人行,必有我师焉 We learned so much from each other, especially from the leaders of JCI Thailand and their previous projects and achievements in Thailand. One of the most valuable experiences was the journey of empowering JCI Thailand in E-Award preparation. The year before, they submitted nothing to JCI World Congress E-Award. Despite the language barrier, JCI Thailand submitted eight (8) E-Award Entries and nominated 6 Award Judges to the 2021 JCI World Congress, which was far beyond our expectations.

The dedications inspired all of us in JCI APDC. Thank You 2021-2022 JCI APDC Chairperson Odontungalag Enkhjargal, Advisors, Coaches, Exco Team especially my super dedicated Councilor Terry Tey, Development Officers, JCI Malaysia and JCI Tanjung Aru for all the inspiration and endorsements.

APDO’s Interview

Name_Nicholas Tan Check Foong Position_2021-2022 JCI Asia Pacific Development Council

Achievement in JCI APDC JCI Asia Pacific Development Council Most Outstanding and Best Development Officer of the Year

1. Could you share about your background and how you get to know about JCI?

I am Nicholas Tan. Commonly known as NicBro. My profession is a Chartered Accountant. I am currently serving as Project Manager in Malaysia Digital Economy Corporate (MDEC), a government agency under Ministry of Communication and Multimedia Malaysia. I joined JCI movement since 2015 when I was still working as a junior auditor in Deloitte. I spent a great deal of time researching and exploring a youth organisation to join. Subsequently, I engaged several youth organisations and attended their events. Ultimately, I selected JCI as I was flabbergasted by its vision and mission and knowing the fact that JCI provides 4 areas of opportunities.

2. What motivate you to take the role as JCI APDC Development Officer?

I believe that JCI APDC would be able to put me in a new environment and constantly challenges me, not only to adapt to and explore new surroundings, but also to engage with different people and teammate from other JCI countries in order to achieve JCI APDC missions in assigned countries.

In fact, JCI provides me the access to JCI friends all around the world. One of the my most memorable JCI experiences happened when I was serving as JCI Kuala Lumpur Secretary General back in 2017 when I travelled to Japan to visit JCI friends in JCI Nishinomiya and JCI Tokyo. That was my first JCI trip to Japan. Thankfully, everything worked in our favour and I learnt so much about Japan from the JCI members in Japan. Since then, travelling is part of my annual plan and taking up role in JCI APDC is like an icing on the cake in my JCI and personal development journey.

3. What is the most valuable experience in your JCI APDC journey?

The physical mission and fellowship session in JCI APDC countries were the most valuable experience in my JCI APDC journey where all JCI APDC officers from various countries across Asia-Pacific travelled to a country to perform JCI mission – to promote and strengthen JCI movement.

JCI APDC team was so excited when we got to know that team Thailand (led by JCI APDC Councillor Terry from JCI Malaysia) was scheduled for an APDC mission in Thailand. I feel so thankful that Councillor Terry gave me an opportunity to be in his training team to conduct physical training to JCI Thailand’s members. The experience and journey were amazing and memorable. YOLO!

25th September 2022

Straits Quay, Penang In conjunction with the 2022 World Heart Day, JCI Malaysia Area North, in collaboration with Penang Adventist Hospital, organized a “Dance For Heart” campaign, with the theme of “Use For ”. The event was held at Straits Quay, Penang on the 25th September 2022. The organizing team is led by Area Director Rayane Mok and National Vice President, Jamie Tiow.

Since the early 1980s, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been the main cause of death in Malaysia. Malaysia saw 36,729 fatalities from coronary heart disease, or 21.86% of all deaths, according to the most recent WHO data published in 2020. Malaysia is ranked #61 in the world with a death rate of 136.21 per 100,000 people when adjusted for age. One fact we cannot deny - heart diseases are silent killers.

Hence, this campaign attempts to raise awareness among the general public while also educating them on how our cardiovascular system functions and how to take care of it.
