Learning Outcomes: 1.Outline what makes a coach ‘successful’ 2.Identify roles, responsibilities and skills needed by a coach. 3.Describe the skills of a coach and apply to sporting circumstances.


Coaching Skills

What skills do you think a sports coach needs?


Skills Communication Probably

the most important skill needed by a coach.

This is in 3 main forms: •Verbal communication •Non-verbal •Listening Communication will be used with the athletes but also parents, officials, other coaches, spectators.


Verbal

Skills DEMONSTRATE (Student Constructs)

•Keep the language simple and clear. Ensure the language is MOVEMENTS AND JOINTS IN ACTION appropriate and that the person/people they are speaking to are concentrating. •Check for understanding by questioning and observing the athlete. Non verbal •Body language is an example of this and it can indicate the coaches mood. •Other examples are hand signals and demonstrations.


Listening

As well as sending out communication it is important that a coach MOVEMENTS can receive information: AND JOINTS IN ACTION •Concentrate when someone is talking •Make eye contact •Avoid interrupting the speaker •Ask questions or summarise to confirm understanding Task •With a partner sit back to back. One describes the sporting situation and the other draws what they have been told.


Organisation

•A coach needs to demonstrate high levels of organisation MOVEMENTS AND JOINTS IN ACTION when delivering sessions. •An organised session will motivate athletes and maintain interest. •In order to be organised you must take into consideration: •Number of participants, the activities, equipment, facility, level of ability. •You must be able to adapt sessions if they are not working but this comes with experience.


Analysing

•You all analyse when watching sport.

•What would you have changed about England's performance in the world cup?

•As a coach you must observe and make judgements on technical and tactical ability. •You must also be able to analyse personality and motivation. The majority of this will be done through watching.


Problem Solving

A coaching environment can be inconsistent problems can arise MOVEMENTS AND JOINTS ACTION which require immediate attention. They couldIN include: •Participants •Equipment •Facility •Opponents •Transport It is a coaches job to sport when something is going wrong and find a solution to allow things to continue as normal. Can you think of solutions to these problems?


Evaluating

This is observing yourself or someone else and assessing MOVEMENTS AND JOINTS IN ACTION the effectiveness of the performance. There are two different ways: 1. You have to constantly have to evaluate your own coaching performance. This will help with future planning 2. A coach should also evaluate the performance of an athlete or team and produce a training programme based on this.


Skills DEMONSTRATE (Student Constructs) Time management. •The tasks a coach has to carry out prior to delivering a MOVEMENTS AND JOINTS IN ACTION session can demand a lot of time and effort. •Most coaches are not professional and will have to juggle the demands of planning and delivering sessions around a job. •The demands can be tough and a coach has to ensure they manage their time effectively. •They must not cut corners and ensure everything is fully planned and prepared.
