Motivational Message Written by Freyda Schneider

I loved it. It talks about being a mensch – a good person who tries hard to do the right thing. It describes the “science of character,” framed through the lens of an ancient Jewish teaching I’d never heard of called “mussar.” When someone says “ancient teachings,” I am not proud to say that a tiny off switch flips in my head and I start to think about what’s for dinner, but I promise this is very much 21st century thinking, and doesn’t require being Jewish or religious – anyone of any faith and background can benefit.

I’m almost comically unprepared for winter. Again. I struggle a bit every winter with holiday-related plans for my two kids and managing their sizable teenage hopes for Chanukah presents. I’ve read over and over again about how I should create memorable “family experiences” as gifts rather than tangible presents. Running TYKEs, I of course love the idea of theater as a fabulous family experience (insert shameless plug for Fly Guy here, opening January 13th). Yet still, the tremendous value of family experiences notwithstanding, I can’t help but feel I have so much more to teach my kids that I haven’t done yet. Then, with new year’s looming, I’m reminded that my precious time with them before they leave for college is whizzing by at breakneck speed. Will they know how to measure the correct amount of laundry detergent in the washer? File their taxes and balance their checkbooks? My mind swirls with all the lessons I feel compelled to bestow upon them, despite their reluctance. And then on a good day, I take a step back. As relevant as the laundry and the taxes will be, the real challenge of course isn’t this type of instruction at all. Like any parent, what I truly want is to have taught them how to be good people. Productive. Kind. Resourceful. To have happy relationships and meaningful lives. I’m not sure I even have the checkbook thing down yet, so how on earth am I going to successfully impart that level of wisdom and sage advice – the living of a life with meaning and purpose?! The task seems enormous and a little daunting, and also really, really essential. Then I watched this ten-minute video.

The gist of this concept is that fascinating research has identified just six universal virtues that people across cultures and throughout history agree lead to a good life: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence. It goes on to explain about 24 character strengths that lead to those virtues – concepts such as creativity and fairness. The “periodic table” lists these strengths of character. Interestingly, it turns out that seven of the 24 strengths on the table have been proven especially important: optimism, gratitude, social intelligence, curiosity, self control, enthusiasm and perseverance. Developing these virtues can help us to become the very best possible version of ourselves. The idea is that these character attributes can be enhanced with practice and repetition.

That we can choose a particular quality – a strength we already have – and focus on it for a time, and doing this will have a lasting effect on our happiness and our wellbeing. In essence, we can cultivate and enhance what we’re already good at, and that very act can cause us to become happier and perhaps even healthier. Our lives can become more successful and meaningful by strengthening the very strengths we already have. And all of the attributes can be learned and cultivated – you don’t need to be born with the virtue for this to work. If we’re feeling brave, we can pick virtues we think may not be in our particular wheelhouses, and focus on them.

So that’s what I want to get my kids for Chanukah. A road map to help them become mensches, the very best possible versions of themselves. To incorporate these ideals into their daily lives by picking one at a time and working on it in small ways every day for a week (or even a month). Maybe we’ll tell a joke a day to work on our humor, or give $1 a day to charity (kindness) or name one thing we’re grateful for before bed every night. It’s not rocket science, but it does seem like a more enlightened way to live. And as an added bonus, Fly Guy: The Musical fits beautifully into the Humor category, so we’re all set there too. Transcendence and a show. What could be better?

WISDOM COURAGE HUMANITY HONESTY PERSPECTIVE JUSTICE TEMPERANCE TRANSCENDENCE FAIRNESS ENTHUSIASM LOVE GRATITUDE SELF-CONTROL SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE TEAMWORK APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY CURIOSITY FORGIVNESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PERSEVERANCE BRAVERY CREATIVITY LEADERSHIP SPIRITUALITY HUMILITY HUMOR KINDNESS LOVE OF LEARNING OPTIMISM PRUDENCE P.S. The same organization made another video called “The Science of Character”. Watch it here.

member profile Jon & Val Alhart

1. Are you both Rochester Natives?

5. Tell us your JCC history.

Jon, yes (Penfield). Val is from Albany, N.Y.

Jon – I have been a member of the JCC since I was 2 or 3 (and I have the membership card to prove it!) Val- I was active at the JCC in Albany throughout my childhood, attending pre-school, summer camp, youth group and later as a youth advisor for B’nai B’rith. Once we moved back to Rochester, one of the first things we did was secure our JCC membership.

2. What do you do for a living? Val, Senior Director of Marketing for Rochester Regional Healthcare Association Family of Companies; Jon, Vice President of Content Marketing and Social Media at Dixon Schwabl

3. Tell us a bit about your family. We have a four-year-old daughter Emerson and 6-month old identical twin boys – Asher and Greyson. Oh, and we can’t forget our 10-year-old dog, Carter.

4. What is your favorite activity to do as a family? We love going to local parks/ playgrounds, concerts, shows (Disney On Ice is a fave). And of course we love coming to the JCC to see the shows here, take a dip in the pool, or burn some calories at the PlayGym.

6. What are the most important parts of the JCC to you and your family? The comfortable feeling of family every time we are here. Whether it’s working out with our friends, stopping in the hallway to talk with a teacher from the Wolk Children’s Center or getting some kettlebell tips from Eke, we always feel like we are at home.

7. Why is this agency an integral part of your lives? It’s our second home – and it’s good for our emotional and physical health. The smiles our children show when they are here, combined with the fitness that makes us feel better about our health, and the offerings through the center’s cultural arts programs make the JCC a special place for us. It’s a community that have given so much to us and so we’re happy to give back to it in any way we can.

8. What do you love most about living in the Rochester community? Everyone’s love for the community and all of the familyfriendly activities that are available for us to do here.

9. Is there a favorite event/festival you always attend in the community? We don’t miss a show from the Dave Matthews Band – been going every year since 1993! We started dating in 2002 and have been going every year together since then.

10. You both will be honored at this year’s Annual Gala as Young Leaders. What does that mean to you? It’s a tremendous honor, especially when you consider the previous recipients. We are humbled to receive it – and we hope we can inspire even more people to give back to the community in any way they can.

11. What do you attribute your personal and professional successes to? Hard work, not taking ourselves too seriously, and family.

12. As young leaders what are some words of wisdom or advice you want to be able to share with others following in your footsteps? Don’t rush things – enjoy every part of your career, and all of the highs and lows. You’ll learn from it all to help you continue to grow.

A small group of JCC staff had an opportunity to participate in a training given by Keshet, a national organization that works for full LGBTQ equality and inclusion in Jewish Life. We met with other local Jewish agencies and synagogues to learn about the core concepts of sex, gender identity and sexual orientation. We spoke about how welcoming and affirming LGBTQ members of our community and began to develop and an action plan to make our programming, policies and culture more inclusive.

“The Keshet training helped to educate and inform us about where the LGBTQ movement is coming from, and what it is moving towards. We learned tools that will help our agency be more inclusive, welcoming, and understanding of these often-marginalized members of our community.” Neil Pickus, Assitant Director Camp Seneca Lake

“Yesterday’s training was an eye opening experience that was informative and thought provoking. It demonstrated how far we have yet to go to truly become an inclusive environment for all.” Rob West Aquatics Director

“Keshet training taught us about the complexities of identity and language relative to sex, gender and sexual preference. Our hope is that this will make us more sensitive to the needs of the LGBTQ community and better prepared to welcome them as part of our community.” Dan Irving, Director Camp Sisol & Gesher

DAYTIME FILM SERIES

Daytime Film Series: Jewish Values in Action

FREE

Tuesdays January 23, February 13, and February 27, 1pm JCC Hart Theater This new series features three films that highlight Jewish holidays and values in action. A brief talk-back will follow each screening. January 23: Tu B’Shevat-Before the Flood (2016, 96 minutes) Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker, Fisher Stevens, and Academy Award-Winning Actor, environmental activist, and U.N. Messenger of Peace, Leonardo DiCaprio, present a riveting account of the dramatic changes occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as what actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. February 13: Jewish Disability Awareness Month– Voices from El Sayed (2009, 75 minutes) El-Sayed is a picturesque Bedouin village in the Israeli Negev desert. It also has the largest percentage of deaf people in the world. There are no hearing aids because in El-Sayed deafness is not a handicap. What happens when one man decides to change his deaf son’s fate and make him a hearing person using the Cochlear Implant Operation? How do we both embrace who we are and what technology can help us become or achieve? Talk-back with Luane Davis Haggerty, PhD, Principal Lecturer at NTID Department of Cultural and Creative Studies, RIT. February 27: Purim – Surviving Skokie (2015, 66 minutes) They survived the horrors of the Holocaust and came to America to put the past behind. For decades they kept their awful memories secret, even from their children. But their silence ended in 1977 when a band of neo-Nazis threatened to march in their quiet village of Skokie, IL “because that is where the Jews are.” This intensely personal story explores one family’s journey from Poland to Skokie, and the lessons of confronting anti-Semitic hate in each generation. For more information, contact Joy Getnick. Free This series is in partnership with the Rochester International Jewish Film Festival.

February 5: The Story of the JCC: The Early Years

February 26: It’s All In Your Head-Neuroplasticity

Ever wonder how the JCC came to be? Who were its founders? What were its goals? What were its first programs? How did it expand to the agency we know and love today? Come explore all this and more as we journey back in time to the early years of the JCC from its founding in 1907 through its first few decades. Facilitator: Joy Getnick, PhD. JCC Director of Jewish Life

Neuroplasticity is a new science that investigates whether the brain is capable not only of altering its structure but also of generating new neurons, even into old age. This presentation discusses these neuroplasticity facts in a fascinating and far-reaching book, Train Your Mind – Change Your Brain by Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley. Facilitator: Bob Vukosic, Osher @ RIT Presidential Leadership class leader

February 12: Breast Cancer Information Workshop This forum will cover what cancer is, risk factors (controllable and uncontrollable); and possible causes for the increase in breast and gynecological cancers. We will also discuss reducing a few of the most common daily toxic exposures. We will discuss breast cancer “marketing”, being a discerning consumer of “pink”, and charitable giving. Facilitator: Lori Meath Breast Care Coalition of Rochester

February 19: Growing Our Resilience Many of us have had overwhelming life experiences and faced difficult circumstances. We may not realize how these events have impacted our physiological wellbeing and shaped how we respond to stress thereafter. More importantly, we might not know that there are simple tools and techniques we can use to restore resilience, develop a healthier stress response, and cultivate emotional regulation. This interactive workshop will briefly cover the physiology of stress, and give participants an opportunity to learn some of these life-changing tools through direct experience. CULTURAL ARTS

JCC CenterStage… Bringing Rochester Theatre to the World The JCC CenterStage 2017-18 Season is packed with area premieres and new works. Our new play initiatives are building our reputation across the country as an innovator of new theatre. Playwright Jason Odell Williams and CenterStage’s Ralph Meranto on the Red Carpet at Opening Night of Church & State in NYC

CHURCH & STATE NOMINATED FOR BEST NEW OFF BROADWAY PLAY JCC Audiences that attended last season’s World Premiere play, CHURCH & STATE truly witnessed something ground–breaking. Church & State was the brain-child of NYC based playwright Jason Odell Williams. The play was nurtured and developed by CenterStage and Williams through a series of readings around the country. The play was also submitted for productions from theatres in the National New Play Network and a production at Los Angeles’ Skylight Theatre played to sold-out audiences and was twice extended.

The script has been published by Dramatists Play Service and a dozen productions have already been scheduled at college, community and professional theaters across the U.S. In fact, productions in Anchorage, Alaska and St. Paul, Minnesota have already played to great audience and critical reviews. We can now officially announce that film rights to the play have been optioned by Gigi Films! Not bad for our first Off-Broadway project!

Playwright Wendy Kout talks about Survivors at the Alliance for Jewish Theatre’s annual conference in Boston

Special Announcement New Play Commissioned to Honor Rochester Survivors

Davida Bloom wowed audiences playing multiple characters in Wild Horses.

Wild Horses Runs Across the Country For 2017 JCC CenterStage partnered again with the National New Play Network for another Rolling World Premiere. Playwright Allison Gregory’s WILD HORSES was performed at JCC CenterStage September 9 & 10 and then continued for additional performances downtown at the Rochester Fringe Festival. Our production of Wild Horses was the second of 4 theatres across the country that have collaborated on this new work. Playwright Gregory was in Rochester for the opening weekend and participated in post-show chats about the play.

JCC CenterStage is pleased to announce that we have commissioned Los Angeles-based writer Wendy Kout to create a new play based on the testimonies of 11 Rochester-based Holocaust survivors. Rochester audiences know Kout as the playwright of Naked in Encino, which has its World Premiere at CenterStage two years ago. To the world, she is known as a former lead writer on Mork & Mindy, and creator of the TV series Anything But Love and the film Dorfman in Love. Using their actual words, Survivors is a one-act docu-drama that tells the story of the Holocaust though the eye-witness testimony of 11 Rochester Holocaust survivors. Audiences will experience the true stories of a fortunate few that overcame impossible obstacles, those who helped them and the voices of those silenced. The play will also inspire audiences to reflect on the content of our own character and the choices we make every day. Survivors will premiere this spring and become an ongoing traveling show. JCC CenterStage is looking for underwriters for the development of the project, as well as sponsors to get the play into schools, regardless of their ability to pay. Anyone interested in learning about any of these projects and/or donating to our new play initiatives can email CenterStage.
