member profile

Emily Rittenberg

Are you from Rochester? Where did you grow up? I was raised in Pittsford. I went to Israel for my first year of college on Young Judaea Year Course and then on to the University of Pittsburgh for a BA in Anthropology. From there I went on to the University of Maryland for an MEd in Education Policy and Leadership, and Loyola University of Maryland for an MA in School Counseling.

When and how did your connection to the JCC begin? It began at a very young age. I grew up at the JCC through its many programs—I went to preschool, attended Camp Sisol and Camp Seneca Lake (Tusc 97). What do you do for a living? I recently started my own business called Nurture: Family Education and Guidance. After working as a School Counselor, and now being a parent, I understand the need for

people to become more present and aware of the external and internal forces that shape their experiences. Becoming more conscious gives people the freedom to intentionally change their beliefs to facilitate their own joy and balance which has great possibilities for parents and educators. I work with individuals and small groups providing seminars, facilitating discussions, and coaching individuals.

Tell us a little about your family. How has the JCC impacted you and your family? My husband Josh and I have two little boys-Ethan age 5 and Jonah age 3. My grandparents, Rana and Lou Levitt were members and supporters of the JCC. My parents, Ellen and Harry Rosen, are both regulars here too. My connection to the J has truly come full circle: our youngest son attends the Wolk Preschool and just this summer, our oldest enjoyed his first summer at Camp Sisol (after graduating from the Wolk). We have also enjoyed 4 summers at Camp Seneca Lake Family Camp. My husband and I are proud to be co-chairing the JCC Gala for the next two years. The JCC and CSL have very much been my home away from home. Working out at the JCC and being

around familiar faces on a regular basis has been a great way for us to build community for our family and feel connected to the people around us. You are new on the Board. What impact do you want to have in your new role? The JCC is so much more than just its awesome facilities. It is truly a community center and while the renovated JCC is a breath of fresh air to our community the programming should continue to evolve with new energy. I would like to see more young families being engaged here and see the fitness class options continue to expand. I hope to bring a younger perspective to the board through the lens of someone who uses so many of its different programs on a regular basis.

What are your favorite things to do here individually and as a family at the JCC? Some of my favorite things to do here include going power vinyasa yoga, personal training sessions, and swimming laps at the pool (I love that the aquatics classes have moved to the new pool and freed up the old pool for more lap swimming). As a family, we love coming to the pool on a Sunday and seeing so many friends there with their kids. It is such a family friendly place to be where our kids can have fun and we can have fun, too! What are you passionate about? Raising good humans, health, building community, being in nature, art and creativity. If you are interested in being featured in our member profile, please contact Lyndsay Thomas.

Motivational Message Don’t Give in to the Cold...

GET MOVING THIS WINTER! Motivational Message from Michele Ruda Leve, Director of The Resource Place and Clinical Social Worker Do Rochester winters throw a wrench into your healthy habits and leave you left with little motivation to go anywhere but the comfort of your own home? It is easy to give in to the early darkness, snowy roads, and low temperatures, but this time of year is more important than ever to keep active and make healthy choices. In winter we all know it takes a conscious effort to maintain our normal levels of exercise. Your solution is right here at the renovated and expanded JCC! We’ve got some suggestions to help you stay fit through the seemingly endless winter months. Develop a habit of walking the indoor track; play some basketball or join a pickleball league; swim a few laps in the pool or bring the kids and splash around in the Bobry Family Pool during open swim time; grab a healthy snack or lunch with a friend at the new Harvest Eatery; warm your chilled bones while reading a book in front of the fireplace in the lounge; join a yoga class or increase the intensity with a Move It class in the all new Champion Fitness Center. There’s always a way to keep yourself and your family members healthy and active at the JCC this winter. So de-stress and don’t fall into old winter habits this year. We’ll see you around the J!

time saving

KITCHEN HACKS Written by, Adrienne Markus, Certified Health Coach

Wouldn’t it be nice to save some time in the kitchen? You know how important it is to cook at home but sometimes it seems as if there are too many steps. You get overwhelmed and opt for take-out. But wait! Have you heard of Kitchen Hacks? A hack is simply an easier way to get a job done that will save you time, money, and energy.

COOKING AND FOOD PREPARATION HACKS: Cover shredded or diced potatoes with cold water before cooking to not only prevent them from turning gray, but if you are roasting them, it will make them extra crunchy. When cooking winter squashes, scoop out seeds using an ice cream scooper. Scoop out bits of egg shell pieces that have fallen into the bowl using part of the egg shell itself.

JCC 585.461.2000

Cooking a bunch of hard boiled eggs at once? Line a muffin tray with paper liners and place an egg inside each cup. Heat eggs for 30 minutes at 350 degrees, then submerge in ice water for 10 minutes. Freeze cheese, butter or ginger to make grating easier and less messy. Coat the inside of a measuring cup or spoon with a dab of oil before measuring foods like honey or nut butters. They will just slide right off!

To prevent veggies from sticking to the pan, place your empty roasting pan in a preheated oven for 2-3 minutes. Once warm, take out the pan and place veggies on it to cook. To prevent your cutting board from slipping, place a damp paper towel underneath it. Mis en Place - prep everything you need ahead of time and then just add the ingredients when they are needed. This works especially well when you are making a stir fry.

Store your jars of natural nut butters upside down, in a small container, inside your refrigerator. This keeps the oils blended. Substitute applesauce or mashed bananas for oil or butter to make a healthier treat. White whole wheat flour adds fiber to any recipe without changing the flavor. Use a mixture of water and white vinegar to make an effective (and cheap!) fruit and vegetable cleaner. Get your kids to help! They will learn good skills and feel more at home in the kitchen.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR ENTIRE WEEK RUN MORE SMOOTHLY

December 1–11 “Delicious! Distinctly original…Powerfully poignant… Great Comedy!” —The New York Times “Must see..Hysterical…I laughed, I cried, I forgot where I parked my car.” —Brad Garrett

Comedian/Actor Brad Zimmerman spent 29 years “temporarily” waiting tables in NYC, while chasing a career in acting and comedy. Instead of giving up, he transformed his pursuit into a hysterical show that played to packed houses in NYC for 15 months. As he talks about his relationship with his parents, a misbegotten love life, persnickety diners and the sweet rewards that come from never giving up on your dreams, Zimmerman’s self-deprecating humor and wicked charm combine for 90 minutes of pure laughter. IS OUR MIDDLE NAME Here are just a few highlights of our commitment to our community connections. The JCC is proud to cultivate these connections in order to fulfill our mission of providing opportunities for meaningful cultural enrichment, physical well being and social, educational, and recreational experiences for individuals and families. Freyda Schneider, Director of TYKEs Children’s Theatre I work with two collaborative groups: the Cultural Classics committee, which is a group of nonprofit cultural organizations in town (Rochester City Ballet, Strong Museum, George Eastman House, etc.) and TheatreROCS, which is a consortium of all the local non-profit theater groups in Greater Rochester.

Joel Elias, Volunteer at the JCCs TechAge program I’ve been doing talks on “Computer and Internet Safety” and “Meet Windows 10” at libraries around the County to promote TechAge Computer Learning Program for adults at the JCC.

Eke Aiono, Associate Executive Director, FWR I train the Brighton Firemen at their station to help our local emergency responders keep fit and healthy. The JCC has also extended a free membership to the Brighton responders.

Dan Irving, Director of Camp Sisol and Gesher Before and Afterschool Program Over the summer Sisol brings 30 kids from School 22 to camp for 6 weeks with the assistance of dedicated volunteers. This is an important community connection because it gives children the chance to attend camp who otherwise wouldn’t.

to our donors for helping us grow! We thank our generous contributors who continue to help sustain the JCC and the value we bring to the lives of our members and the Greater Rochester community. The Our Vision, Our Future capital campaign is still underway and we thank the many whose gracious donations have made this expansion and renovation a reality.
