JCCC in Rolling Stone
In the October 15 1998 issue of Rolling Stone magazine, JCCC was listed as one of the most respected community colleges in the country, one that could be viewed as a guide to evaluating others. The article mentioned JCCC’s small classes, the high number of full-time professors, the college’s Career Center, the college’s ties with local businesses, and its curricula that responds to local needs, citing both the railroad and information technology programs as examples. In addition, to its recent pop status, JCCC has received a lot of recognition for educational excellence over the years.
Learning comes first at JCCC. Since its founding in 1969, Johnson County Community College has been committed to serving the needs of Johnson County residents for higher education and lifelong learning. The college seeks to provide educational leadership while responding to the identified needs of the community by providing high-quality educational programs that are accessible to all who can benefit from them. With over 19,000 credit students and an equal number of continuing education students enrolled each semester, JCCC is the state’s third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges. JCCC is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and is a member of the League for Innovation. As it has grown, JCCC has added faculty and staff. There are now more than 730 fulltime faculty and staff, with a ratio to students nearly identical to that of a decade ago. Many of our faculty have doctorates and almost all have master’s degrees. Faculty consistently receive top national awards for excellence in teaching and for developing innovative approaches to classroom work. Innovation and excellence are the hallmarks of the academic program at JCCC. An outstanding faculty is the cornerstone of the institution. The 234-acre campus, which opened in 1972 with six buildings, is located at the center of the county at the intersection of College Boulevard and Quivira Road. In recent years, new buildings have been constructed at a steady pace. The Carlsen Center (originally the Cultural Educaton Center), completed in 1990, provides the county’s first performing arts complex and houses JCCC’s burgeoning community education program. The Classroom Laboratory Building, featuring a state-of-theart computer lab, opened in January 1993. There are 19 major buildings on campus, including the Police Academy and Horticultural Science Center, constructed in 2001, and the recently constructed Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, both which open in the fall, 2007. JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. Class size averages 25 to 40 students, which is much lower than many larger colleges and universities. Courses are offered
