A Great Sports Town From one of the nation’s loudest NFL stadiums to one of NASCAR’s newest racing destinations, to the best baseball fans in America, sports never go out of season in Kansas City. So pick your passion, Kansas City has a sport to match. The crack of the bat signals springtime has arrived when the Kansas City Royals open each season at renovated Kauffman Stadium. The crowd roars for first baseman Eric Hosmer and the “boys in blue” as giant fountains cascade just beyond the outfield wall. During their 2014 Postseason run, the Kansas City Royals provided enormous excitement and joy through a seemingly endless supply of memorable moments and plays. On the opposite side of the metro area, the Kansas City T-Bones have built a loyal fan following at their ballpark in Village West. Arrowhead Stadium belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs August through January. During football season, the stadium parking lot transforms into the world’s largest tailgate party--complete with everyone’s version of Kansas City barbecue. In 2010, fans were treated to the results of a $375 million renovation of Arrowhead, including a new stadium club and expanded memorabilia store. From April through September, major league soccer’s Sporting KC take to the field. The team plays in the brand new, state-of-the art Sporting Park. The $200 million venue is one of the best stadiums in North America and combines the best attributes of European and South America soccer stadia with the modern amenities American sports fan desire. In 2013, Sporting brought home MLS Cup to Kansas City. Check out the new Independence Events Center and cheer on the Missouri Mavericks minor league hockey team and the Kansas City Comets of the MISL Although the Comets recently returned to the local soccer scene, their history dates back to the 1981-82 season when the Comets joined the original MISL. Not only are the Comets back in action—they’re also the 2014 MISL Champions after defeating the Baltimore Blast The National Women’s Soccer League’s FC Kansas City is continuing an impressive streak that started with the team’s debut in 2013. The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art arena that plays host to major sporting events. Attached to the arena is the new College Basketball Experience. The CBE features the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well as an interactive fan area. Golfer Tom Watson calls the KC Metro area home. This hometown hero won 39 times on the PGA Tour, including eight majors. Baseball history connects in Kansas City in a big way. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, part of the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District, notes the considerable contributions of early players and greats like Jackie Robinson, who played shortstop for the Kansas City Monarch’s until the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him and Kansas City legends Satchel Paige and Buck O’Neal.

Kansas City is also home to world championship women’s teams. In 2007, the Kansas City Roller Warriors, KC’s premier all-female roller derby team, captured the WFTCA World Championship and in 2009 the Kansas City Tribe, an all-female football team, captured the IWLF Championship.
