Life JCCC Student Experience If you are planning to earn a degree from a four-year college or university, then you need to know learning comes first at Johnson County Community College! That means you can choose a specific major while you’re here and take the exact courses you will need to complete your degree at a four-year school. And if you are not yet sure what you would like your major to be, you can enroll in the general education requirements all schools ask for while yo make up you mind. JCCC students to well at four-year schools; in fact studies show there is no significant difference between two-and four-year college students at the end of their freshman year in tears of reading, math and critical thinking. A good education depends on good teaching. JCCC’s professors are here to teach. JCCC faculty members have the same credentials as the professors at four-year schools. Classes are small enough to allow a one-on-one relationship with your instructors. If you are in a hurry to start your career, JCCC offers more than 50 one-year certificate and two-year associate degree and certificate programs that lead to careers needed in the community. If you are a student who has excelled in high school, the Honors Program offers a challenging series of courses, forums, lectures and readings. In the Honor Program, you will work directly with a professor on an honors project, which will allow you to explore a topic in greater depth. You may also join Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors society for students at community, junior and technical colleges. At JCCC, you will find state-of-the-art computer labs (both PC and Macintosh). If you are a science student, you will study in anatomy, chemistry, earth science, environmental science and biotechnology labs; if you enroll in a foreign language, then you can take advantage of a fully equipped language lab. While dental hygiene students work in realistic dentist’s office oncampus, nursing and respiratory care students practice their skills in simulated hospital rooms. Healthcare students also work with Mel, the human simulator, who can simulate 34 different patient profiles, from acute asthma attack to insulin shock.
Learning opportunities for JCCC students can vary from traditional classroom lectures to individualized laboratory projects to work experiences in the community. Student life is not just books, students always find time for fun.
In the Career Services Center, you will find career/life counseling, assessments, resources and job listings. Career counselors can help you successfully explore, identify, select and prepare for a career you will enjoy. Students can take advantage of free on-campus tutoring in accounting, mathematics, reading, chemistry, biology, physics and writing. The Math Resource Center is open to help you with math problems, while you can take writing questions to the Writing Center on campus. However, student life at Johnson County Community College is more than just books, term papers and exams. Some of the most important lessons learned at JCCC occur far from any lecture hall or lab. JCCC students always find time for fun! Concerts, plays, comedians, movies, sports, canoe and ski trips, more than 50 special interest clubs, student governance, lectures and campus forums are just some of the activities you will enjoy each semester at JCCC. The Carlsen Center provides Kansas City’s most comprehensive performing arts complex, presents the largest multidiscipline performing arts series in the region, and houses JCCC’s continuing education program.
