Head Athletic Trainer
Bill Buese oversees the athletic training for all 18 sports at JCCC, and has been in that capacity for 25 years. In addition, Buese teaches in the physical education department at JCCC, and serves as a Clinical Instructor of Sports Medicine at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences Department of Family Medicine. During his tenure with the Cavaliers athletic department, Buese has been a part of 10 national championships, 70 top five national finishes, 92 region championship teams and 128 conference championship teams. He also has served as the athletic trainer for an NJCAA All-Star baseball team vs. Japan in 1994, and for an NJCAA All-Star softball team that toured Canada in 1997. A native of Festus, Mo., Buese graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 1982, and received his master’s degree in athletic training from Central Missouri in 1983. Buese is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and Kansas Athletic Trainers' Society. He served as president for KATS from 1991-93, and as public relations director from 1995-98. During the summers of 1986 and 1987, Buese was honored by being selected as the athletic trainer for the East Squad at the East-West Shrine Bowl football game. While at JCCC, Buese has served on the Education Affairs Committee, Campus Safety and Preparedness Committee, HPER Curriculum Committee, Sabbatical Screening Committee and Education Technology Committee. He has received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development excellence award, and was a Burlington Northern Award nominee in 1998. Ben Edwinson Associate Athletic Trainer
many competitions, including the 2005 Sunflower State Games. Edwinson earned a bachelor of science in exercise science from the University of Kansas in 2001, and attained his Master’s Degree in December, 2008, from Emporia State University. He and his wife, Joy, have two children.
outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges. Gustafson’s work has also been recognized by the University Photographer’s of America in several monthly contests. On campus, Gustafson was selected as the 2001 AMS Spotlight Award Winner, and three years later was named the Foundation’s Colleague of the Year.
Jim Dice
HPER Facility and Clinics Director Jim Dice enters his fourth year as HPER Facility and Clinic Coordinator, however, he enters his 16th year on staff at the college. Prior to his recent appointment, Dice has served as an assistant conditioning coach and athletic event manager. Dice also was a standout athlete. He was also a former athlete at JCCC. He competed two seasons in track and field focusing on field events, particularly the javelin. His sophomore year, Dice earned All-Jayhawk Conference and All-East Jayhawk Conference in javelin. As a freshman, he earned all-EJC in the javelin, discus and hammer. Dice went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education at UMKC. Dice also was an accomplished weightlifter. He was a member of the U.S. National Weightlifting Team from 1988 to 1995. In 1988 he was the Junior National Champion in the 110 kilos. That same year, he won captured the silver medal at the Junior Pan America Games in Maricuabo, Venezuela in 1988. Dice also was a five-time Olympic Festival medalist, winning two golds, two silvers and one bronze, and in 1992 was a U.S. Olympic Trials participant. Dice also was a three-time collegiate national champion in the 110 kilos, winning in 1988, 1989 and 1991. He capped his competitive weightlifting career by winning the 1995 100+kilo at the U.S. National championships. From 1996 to 1999, Dice served as the AAU National Chairperson for weightlifting. Dice, and his wife, Sarah, have a four-year old son, J.J.
Dave Noteboom JCCC Announcer
Dave Noteboom, known on campus as Boomer, enters his seventh season as the official Voice of the Cavaliers. Noteboom energizes all the events at JCCC on the court, track, and diamond with his own buttery, smooth style of delivery and signature “Threeeeeee” rings through the arena at basketball events. Noteboom has called many great sporting events in his career at JCCC, including district champion volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and this fall will call his third NJCAA Half Marathon National Championship. Noteboom ties to JCCC go back to the 1993-94 school year. A member of the JCCC baseball team as a pitcher, Boomer got his first opportunity to announce a game during an off day, and he confidently grabbed the micraphone and rose to the challenge. Noteboom went on to play baseball at Pittsburg State University, and again was called upon to announce the action when he was not on the mound. One of his greatest calls came when Gorillas defeated Missouri Southern for the first time in the program’s history with a walk-off grand slam.
Ben Edwinson enters his
fifth year as assistant athletic trainer at JCCC. Edwinson works primarily with the soccer teams in the fall, and helps cover all of the spring sports. Edwinson also teaches part of JCCC’s pre-athletic training program, including Introduction to Sports Medicine and the practicum that parallels it. During his time on stafff, Edwinson has been part of three national championship teams, 20 top five national finishes, 23 region championship teams and 15 conference championship teams. A native of Austin, Texas, Edwinson became a Certified Athletic Trainer in 2002, and has worked with athletes at many different levels. Prior to joining the JCCC athletic department, Edwinson was head athletic trainer at DeSoto High School from 2003-05. He also worked during the summer, 2006, as head athletic trainer fro the Kansas Koyotes, an arena football team in Topeka, Kan. He has also worked as a volunteer athletic trainer at
Bret Gustafson
JCCC Photographer Bret Gustafson is in his 30th year on staff at JCCC as the college photographer. He provides the photographs for all JCCC athletic publications, posters and web page. His athletic photographs have been showcased in 174 award-winning publications, and his work has been featured on 23 covers judged “Best in the Nation” in College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) competitions. Over his career, Gustafson has been cited numerous times for excellence in his field.
