SHALOM Dear Friends, November is here, and the JCA has an amazing array of authors and films to share with you! Our Jewish Cultural Arts Festival chair, Sherrie Saag, has been hard at work with her committee putting together a wonderful and varied festival. It all kicks off on November 1, with the incredible film Saul and Ruby, To Life! about a pair of sprightly Holocaust survivors who bring their tuneful call adam CHASKIN for peace and healing from their assisted living facilities in Florida to the world stage. The event will feature a talk with the film’s beloved stars, Saul Dreier and Ruby Sosnowicz. This opening night is proudly brought to you by Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q and Kirsten and Josh Martino. You will not want to miss this incredible film and duo or any of the other events through November 17. This is our twentyfourth year presenting this exceptional program at the JCA. The school year is in full swing, and although different than previous years, our incredible programs remain in full swing as well, including our incredible theatre program led by Shelly Hughes. The JCA Magic Wardrobe Theatre Program is the second most popular school field trip destination in Jacksonville, attracting over 20,000 students per year. We look forward to the resumption of this program so students once again can experience the magic of live, interactive theatre. We continue to offer a wide variety of our extremely popular youth theatre programs, including a performance of Peanuts coming up next month. For adults, our J Institute has an incredible variety of classes, whether you are looking to explore the Jacksonville area, socialize at the JCA, learn new things, partake in wellness programming or explore the many cultural arts offerings of our community! The J Institute is a place to grow your mind and spirit! The fall Jewish Holidays recently concluded. I hope you had a nice holiday season and feel renewed and looking forward to a new year. Thanksgiving will be here soon, which is much like the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, where we give thanks for all the goodness and blessings we have and share our joy with family and loved ones.

YOUTH SERVICES

Practicing Gratitude With Your Kids

By Evan McInnis, Youth Services Assistant Director “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the foundation of all others” - Cicero In Youth Services’ after-school program, we have introduced the concept of an internal “bucket” that’s fullness represents one’s current emotional and mental well-being. When we choose to be dismissive, rude or careless we are “bucket dippers.” However, when we choose kindness we become “bucket fillers.” One of our favorite ways to fill our own, and others’, buckets is gratitude. Research by Dr. Robert Emmons, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Positive Psychology, has shown that regularly practicing gratitude can have a slew of physical, psychological and social benefits for both the young and young-at-heart. This Thanksgiving season, we invite you and your loved ones to come together and find your reasons to give thanks. You may find that doing so may not only fill someone else’s bucket, but your own as well.

Michele Block Gan Yeladim Leads JCC’s Across the Nation Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic By Danielle Wirsansky

The Michele Block Gan Yeladim Preschool & Kindergarten has been a model for other JCC school re-openings across the country. As one of the first schools to reopen its doors since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our educators and administrators are examples to follow. The school’s Pedagogista, Natalia Fisher, led the way in shaping the school’s reopening and the way educators changed their perspectives and approaches in the classroom. She led a workshop hosted by the JCC Association of America detailing the school’s experiences reopening, answering the questions and allaying the fears of educators and administrators across the nation. Fisher said, “We are learning to be together again in the time of COVID-19. I knew right away we would have to take it slowly and start with rebuilding trust—in our spaces, in the new protocols, and with the families in our school.” She also wrote a blog post, featured by the JCC, titled “We Must Be the Light in the Darkness.” In it, she uses the Sheva lenses Tzelem Elohim (the Divine image) and Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) to help guide educators and parents to compassion and understanding during this difficult time. She makes the point that during such difficult times, all victories and joys should be celebrated. “It’s difficult to see the beauty around us when there’s so much darkness descending, but we can’t see the light without the darkness, can we?” Fisher wrote. “As a school community, we have the opportunity to be the hope, even in the darkest circumstances. When it feels as though the whole world is burning down, how do we step forward? We breathe. We show our compassion with open arms and hands, ready to receive. We model the peace we know will return. We pivot, adjust, and step forward—gently, intentionally, with strength, and fully awake to our reality and our great responsibility to be the light in the darkness.”

FITNESS AND WELLNESS

NTH

Hank Arnold Members for 30 years, Hank Arnold and his family joined the JCA to find community. His wife, Hollie, has been the JCA’s Communications Director, Membership Director, and now Membership Specialist. His daughter, Raquel, grew up at the JCA and became a preschool teacher. His grandchildren Mara and Max participated in the JCA’s after school program, J-cation days, camp, theatre program, and soccer team. But while they were very involved at the JCA, Hank never had any fitness routine or regimen. A former volunteer firefighter and substitute teacher, Hank retired after developing an essential tremor. At age 58, Hank suffered a “widow maker heart attack and developed prediabetes. Hank knew he had to use this opportunity to focus on his health. “Something started to click. Maybe I survived for a greater purpose. Hank and Hollie started walking 3 miles daily. Walking improved Hank’s ejection fraction (how well his heart pumps) from 33% to over 60%, and his A1C is now

excellent. His blood pressure medicine was cut in half. “My cardiologist said it looks like I didn’t even have a heart attack. Despite such amazing improvement in his health, Hank developed stage 3 chronic kidney disease. But Hank continues to walk daily, knowing that research shows regular walking helps kidney disease patients live longer and cut the odds they’d need dialysis or a kidney transplant. Walking truly changed Hank’s life, and he wanted to pay it forward. In September 2019, Hank started the free JCA Walking Club. Fifty-one members strong, the club stays connected through email tips and challenges. Club members strive to exercise 30 for 30. This means 30 minutes a day, 30 days a month. At the end of each month, members submit their mileage or steps and win JCA prizes if they achieve a personal goal. Hank hopes his journey will inspire others to improve their health, literally one step at a time. If you’d like to join him and the JCA walking club, stop by or call the Program Registrar’s Office.

The Maccabees were Jewish rebel warriors and heroes of the Chanukkah story. Maccabee means “hammer and has become a symbol of physical might, spiritual strength and mental resilience in the face of adversity.

SPORTS AND RECREATION Getting After It By Rio Robinson

We are three months in to our fall season of sports leagues, clinics, lessons, and overall activity at the JCA, and it feels great to be back! Cheering the kids on, seeing them smile when I give them a hard time, creating fun nicknames for each player, and most importantly, instilling lifelong lessons while our athletes develop sport-specific skills give me a purpose in life.  It comes with some sacrifices compared to how it used to be, but I feel that I am living my dream and I hope everyone has an appreciation of how fortunate we are to be back. The JCA has tremendous leadership that has safely guided our organization through these unprecedented events while continuing to strive for the safest environment for our members and staff. That ensures my staff and I can do what we know best - engage our members and program participants in a meaningful experience and provide a sense of community. At the JCA and during these trying times, we continue to strive to offer a community environment. Who knows exactly what the future will bring, but as long as we are safe and deliberate in the programs and services we provide while continuing to be an inclusive Jewish center, we can be that beacon in the community to connect people in a meaningful way. Let’s keep climbing and getting after it - there is still room for improvement before 2021 gets here!
