Like a lot of 20 year olds, we look out at the world and see endless possibilities. We’ve had a year in our new place…a much different place from the one we called home for so long. Our formative years were full of rapid growth (and the growing pains that go with it) and a dedicated community of support. Without such support—believing in our future—we never would have made it to 20. Now, entering a new phase in our life, we realize there is a whole new set of opportunities awaiting us. With your respect and support, we are ready to seize the bright future that lies ahead. Jazz St. Louis has experienced a dramatic evolution since Barbara Rose first established a world-class jazz club in Grand Center in 1995. Jazz at the Bistro and Jazz St. Louis have grown into an internationally recognized jazz presenter responsible for nearly 300 performances a year, with plans for over 100 more this season! We have also gone on to become a top jazz education institution, reaching more than 150,000 students since the year 2000 through in-school performances and master classes, youth concerts, student ensembles, and more. The support of Jazz at the Bistro subscribers has had a vital impact on our ability to reach those students and raise up the next generation of jazz musicians and enthusiasts. Now in our 20th year of presenting the best in live jazz, we have a great lineup of musicians scheduled to perform in our one-year-old home, The Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz. Over the past year, we have seen a massive increase in ticket sales—more than 50%

Styles Look for these sub-genre classifications to help you get an idea of what an artist’s music is like. A couple of quick definitions if you’re not familiar: straight-ahead: The classic jazz sounds of the 40s, 50s, and 60s when bebop, hard bop, and cool jazz dominated the scene. Think Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie or early Miles Davis and John Coltrane. soul jazz: Groove-oriented sounds from the 60s and 70s, usually involving an organ and borrowing from hard bop, funk, gospel, and soul. Think Jimmy Smith, Eddie Harris, and George Benson. fusion: In the 70s, jazz had a love affair with rock, bringing an electrified, highenergy sound to the music. Think Miles Davis’s “Bitches Brew,” Weather Report, and Return to Forever. modern jazz: The jazz of today, spearheaded by a younger generation but rooted in the tradition of the straight-ahead. A sub-genre that is sure to appease jazz purists and adventurous music seekers alike. contemporary jazz: The smoother side of fusion, with influences coming from pop, gospel, and R&B. All the rest should be pretty self-explanatory!

“… a huge smear of sound and joy: exuberance, subtlety (yeah, even in fusion), beauty, fire” popmatters.com

Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks & Eric Harland: PRISM October 21-24, 2015 From his beginnings with Miles Davis to his celebrated ensembles of today, Grammy Award-winning bassist Dave Holland has one of the most enduring legacies in jazz. The Boston Globe praises Holland as “a master bassist and bandleader, one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world.” Following recent tours with his own quintet, big band, and a duo with pianist Kenny Barron, Holland goes electric with his latest groundbreaking project: PRISM, featuring guitarist and former Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks and drummer Eric

Harland. The group’s debut record prompted Jazzwise Magazine to call it Holland’s “…most visceral recording for many years, recalling the uncompromising onslaught of his work with Miles [Davis] in 1970, and his own Extensions band in the late 1980s.” This plugged-in trio is an explosive outlet for Holland at his unbridled best.

Poncho Sanchez and His Latin

Jazz Band

November 4-7, 2015 If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez’s music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa, and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. Sanchez grew up in a suburb of LA, where he was raised on an unusual cross section of sounds that included straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz, and American soul. Whatever the genre, the mesmerizing array of sounds and colors from Sanchez’s youth have traversed the decades and continue to inform his creative sensibilities to this day. His over 20-year relationship with Concord Records has yielded two dozen recordings, a Grammy Award, and several Grammy nominations.

“If we were to form a jazz combo, our model would most definitely be Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O!” The Three Wisemen

Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-o December 16-19, 2015

Welcomed by New Music Circle

It was a snowy day in May when Matt Wilson, Jeff Lederer and Paul Sikivie gathered at Maggie’s Farm recording studio to spread Christmas cheer. The result of that gathering is Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O, a collection of everyone’s favorite holiday tunes that’s destined to be added to holiday music collections all over the globe.

Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays? His Christmas Tree-O…does more or less what you’d expect, batting around holiday standards with a mischievous but sentimental air…In any case, the band, with Paul Sikivie on bass and Jeff Lederer on reeds, represents something more than a side project or a symptom of seasonal opportunism. It has its own gait and style.” (The New York Times)

The Bad Plus Welcomed by New Music Circle

“Better than anyone at mixing the sensibilities of post-60s jazz and indie rock...” The New York Times

January 6-9, 2016 The Bad Plus has spent over 15 years redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. They’ve reached audiences of all demographic stripes with genre-defying music that is at once complex, heartfelt, humorous, and instantly engaging. Featuring bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King, The Bad Plus is a leaderless trio with a committed belief in what they’ve dubbed ‘avant-garde populism’ — the idea that serious music can be as engaging and accessible as it is forward-thinking and provocative. “This band contains some of the most punk energy I’ve ever seen or felt as a musician — it just doesn’t need to do it so obviously,” King says. “That’s our statement. It’s a complex emotion.”

Warren Wolf & Wolfpack Throughout its history, jazz has been revitalized with a continual evolution of style, fresh transformations in expression, bold leaps into the free improvisational sphere, and most importantly the arrival of young artists who, while steeped in the past, have an eye to the future of the idiom. “Aimée has a sweet, girlish voice that she controls with a sniper’s precision... a bravura turn, presented with a smile.” The New York Times

Cyrille Aimée February 3-6, 2016 Vocalist Cyrille Aimée was primarily raised in France by a French/Dominican parentage. As a curious child, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She quickly fell in love with gypsy music and way of life; years later she would sing on street corners while traveling across Europe. While in the midst of one such odyssey, she found herself at the Montreux

Jazz Festival, where she won first prize in the vocal competition—which financed her first album. Even more recently, Aimée caught the attention of Stephen Sondheim, who cast her in an Encore Special Presentation starring Bernadette Peters at New York’s City Center. The Wall Street Journal described Aimée as “astonishingly creative…with a brilliant sound, fresh ideas, impeccable rhythm and an overall approach that honors tradition without being shackled to the past.” Sponsored by

straight-ahead / modern jazz subscription series 1 3

The Marcus Roberts Trio, featuring long-time members Jason Marsalis on drums and Rodney Jordon on bass, is known for its virtuosic style and entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. While most have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music by changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form at any time. And they do this with lightning quick musical reflexes and creative imaginations. The trio is known for having almost telepathic communication on the stage. The Marcus Roberts Trio believes in ‘letting the music take over,’ and the result is a powerfully rhythmic and melodic sound that is filled with dynamic contrast. One of the most enjoyable aspects of watching this trio perform is that it is so evident that these three musicians are really having fun playing together!

James Carter Organ Trio March 2-5, 2016

“His performance was nothing short of a virtuoso clinic, a toe-tapping, heart-stopping, smile-making romp.” Detroit News James Carter is a powerhouse musician and one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, garnering plaudits for his role in helping to propel jazz full tilt into the future over the past 25 years. He is fueled by deep respect and intimate knowledge of the jazz tradition, but given his intrigue for contrasts and hybrids, his music also defies comfortable categorization. Born and raised in Detroit, Carter grew up surrounded by music, soaking up everything from funk and fusion to rock, soul, and various strains of acoustic jazz. Carter’s Organ Trio album At the Crossroads documents the group’s combustible chemistry.

Melissa Aldana April 27-30, 2016 At 24, Chilean-born tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana seemed to come out of nowhere to win the prestigious, hotly contested 2013 Thelonious Monk Competition. She may have been a dark horse, but her captivating sound and bold creative vision have been nurtured by some of jazz’s most insightful talent scouts. Born in Santiago, she was a teenage standout on the Chilean jazz scene when an encounter with Danilo Perez left the pianist so impressed he recruited her for Berklee College of Music. The concerts on the next few pages are just what we say they are – special. Whether it’s an annual tradition, a new artist passing through town, or shows for the holidays, these unique and diverse concerts prove Jazz St. Louis offers something special for everyone.

Dave King Trucking Company September 4-5, 2015 Drummer Dave King of The Bad Plus has become enamored with the concept of bridging the gap between American roots music, avant-garde, and the midwestern “outsider.” In the arts particularly, the romanticized notion of the great innovator who created outstanding work without fanfare because of regional displacement has become gospel to wide audiences. There you have the defining elements of the Dave King Trucking Company. As a matter of fact, the ensemble could be seen as the poster child for bands revolting against the “academic” lean of mainstream jazz. Featuring a post-concert viewing party of Dave King’s comedy web series, “Rational Funk.”

Byron Stripling & the Jazz St. Louis Big Band

A Tribute to Clark Terry October 16-17, 2015 Trumpeter Clark Terry, a St. Louis native and one of the greatest influences on jazz and jazz education in the music’s rich history, passed away on February 21, 2015. In honor of his great legacy, the Jazz St. Louis Big Band will perform the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie (Terry was one of the few musicians to play in both bandleaders’ orchestras), as well as the newly commissioned “CT Suite – Three Portraits in Blues,” joined by one of Terry’s premier protégés, Byron Stripling. The suite, commissioned by Stripling’s Columbus Jazz Orchestra, features three movements reflecting on the jubilant life of Mr. Terry, composed by Dennis Mackrel, John Clayton, and Chad Eby. Jazz St. Louis has commissioned local trombonist Cody Henry to compose a fourth movement for the “CT Suite.” Join us in celebrating the wonderful life and musical contributions of St. Louis’s own Clark Terry. While we try to let you stay for the second set at no additional charge as often as possible, there will be times when there is not enough availability to do so. An announcement will be made after the first set to let you know whether you can stay for free or with the purchase of a discounted or full-priced ticket. Are there any age restrictions? No. The Ferring Jazz Bistro is an all-ages venue. Can I take pictures? You may take non-flash photos for most performances. However, please be mindful of the light and noise that comes from your camera as to not disturb the people around you. How long are the performances? Performances last approximately 70 minutes.
