ABOUT MARION JAZZ BAND ONE

Marion High School’s Jazz Band One is one of two jazz ensembles at Marion High School. This year Marion High School placed 1st at the Liberty Jazz Festival, and trombone Aaron Piper was awarded outstanding soloist at both the Liberty Jazz Festival and the Tallcorn Jazz festival.

Marion’s Jazz Band One is a frequent participant in the Iowa Jazz Championships, placing 8th last year. Marion High School had the pleasure of opening a brand new Performing Arts Center this year, an occasion which they commissioned a new work “A Place Between There and Here,” by Bob Washut. Their Corridor Jazz Project selection, Commandante/Commandanta by Paul Lichty, was also a work commissioned for this year’s ensemble. The group is directed by Logan Vander Wiel, who also serves as the Jazz Chair for the Iowa Bandmasters Association.
