The end of the year is upon us. For many, it is a time of reflection and hopefully relaxation. Days spent enjoying the beautiful weather, a sense of excitement in the air and a general upbeat mood vibrating through the city. However the build up to the holiday season can be a stressful and exhausting time. Last minute shopping, an influx of holidaymakers, invitations and events to attend and vacation details to plan. Banish the signs of fatigue from your complexion with the latest radiance and illuminating products. With the hectic Banish the signs of holiday schedule make sure you don’t fatigue from your forget to shield your skin from the sun’s complexion with the harmful rays with the must-have latest radiance and protection products found on the illuminating products. Beauty pages 25 and 27. Thankfully we have become diligent about applying a SPF when exposing our skin to the sun or hopefully on a daily basis. How many of us practice the same rigor in protecting our hair? Days spent in the sun can have a negative effect on the condition of our hair. Season for care, page 98, educates readers on the necessary products to keep your hair looking fabulous this summer. ESTETICA chats to local stylists in the Round Table discussion on ways to further protect your hair and the latest trends of the season. Shoneez Warrington, owner of Spoilt Hair Salon in Cape Town, recently attended the Vidal Sassoon Creatives course in London and shares her knowledge on current overseas trends and what styles, techniques and colour we can look forward to. Reflecting over the past year, we at ESTETICA, have so much to be thankful for. With the launch of our new monthly newsletter, AFRO Supplement and The Best Colour and Technique Supplement 2011, as well as welcoming valuable new clients and contributors on board. However, ESTETICA would like to apologise for the use of images depicting fur garments and will take this into consideration in future publications. I would like to wish all ESTETICANS a happy and safe holiday season and a positive and prosperous 2012. We look forward to further educating, informing and inspiring you in the New Year.

ONI&GUY - trend trail-blazers in their own right are now emblematic of beautiful, inspirational hair at London Fashion Week. Their signature is etched on our most exciting festival of couture as indelibly as that of any of our greatest designers, as they’ve ensured for ever-more that this will also be seen as a ‘hair’ experience in its own right. Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and the TONI&GUY Art Team have proven that never again will hair be seen merely as a “fashion accessory” on the runway! Fabrics boasted a spectrum of colours from the tame and quasi-monochromatic through to the vibrantly shocking. Giles Deacon’s collection had the sharpness of metallic silver, tempered with airy plumes and accentuated with luxurious trailing ball-gown skirts. Corsets elsewhere pulled in waists to ballerina effect and fused T-shirts into dresses. Todd Lynn used colour to establish the identity of the collection, providing a palette of storm blue, black, natural white, ice and lilac grey; fabrics were chosen to show stark contrasts in texture, with leathers fusing with silk and transparent organza. By festooning the runway with romantic blossoms, Bora Aksu created the perfect showcase for rich elegant fabrics of chiffon and silk embroidered with beautiful detailing. Blue, ivory and anthracite sported hints of colour in cloudy blue and red. Paul Costelloe Rich, textured rose to the occasion by doing what he always does fabrics and a stream best - lightening the mood and reminding us that of sumptuousness! this is all about spring/summer! Tailored coats and ultra-swing jackets over sleek shirts and stunningly simple shift dresses. Knife pleats are contrasted with billowed sleeves and fluted edges. Just four of the dozens of shows styled by the TONI&GUY Art Team... Giles Deacon

... meanwhile, across the other side of the pond...

New York Fashion Week saw Aveda, global leader in corporate environmental sustainability, style the hair for four spectacular shows under the direction of lead stylist, Antoinette Beenders. Aveda’s green credentials always ensure an ‘environmentally friendly’ backstage, which is always a welcome addition and an atmosphere which runs at fever-pitch! For Christian Siriano’s spring/ summer show, the hair was smart and flirtatious but with a special captivating charm. “It had to be playful and look effortless,” explained Antoinette. “So we updated the loose, beachy waves of the ’90s by transforming them into a more groomed look that’s With inimitable panache, smart, young and approachable.” For Preen, Aveda Antoinette lead stylist, Paul Hanlon, designed neat, precise Beenders (above left) twists in a hairstyle that embodied the youthful, headed up modern lightness of the collection: “Justin Thornton the creative and Thea Bregazzi for Preen produced a beautifully direction for Aveda at modern collection marked by linear shapes and NYFW SS12. patterns punctuated with Victorian-era touches, said All backstage imagery: Jon Paul. “In recognition of this, the hair is pure and tight Gurinsky to the head to create a clean line that elegantly elongates the neck.” Styling backstage for Band of Outsiders was Didier Malige, who created two looks: whirled waves for Band of Outsiders Girl and a textured, tousled chignon for Band of Outsiders Boy. Didier commented: “The hair for both looks at Band of Outsiders is textured, matte and has an easy look, almost undone. It’s as if she’s done her hair herself, pulling it back into a loose chignon or letting it fall into natural waves.” For Didier’s second show Sophie Théallet, it was back to practicalities with a Bold and brazen colours solution to that perennial summer bête noire - what that demand the pure to do with long, wet hair. He designed beautiful light of the season! après-swim chignons to complement Sophie Théallet’s collection, which was inspired by La Piscine, or The Swimming Pool - an emotionally charged 1969 film set in a St. Tropez villa. “It’s inspired by the hair is that of a girl who has just gone swimming, as if she has offhandedly pulled her hair back in a chignon and just left it to dry,” explained Didier. “It reflects a nonchalant sensuality, her natural and understated sophistication. No fuss, no drama, she has the confidence to know that ‘uncomplicated’ is invariably the perfect solution.” E S T E T I C A S O U T H A F R I C A | 19

rainbow of colour, luminous lasers, neon paint and excited chatter filled the Scarlet Ribbon in Johannesburg, the venue for the sixth annual Biosense & Itely Hairfashion Ace Quest 2011 competition. This year’s event, held on the 16 October 2011, was once again a huge success and showcased the passionate local talent in South Africa. The event was opened with a show by the Electrifying Biosense & Itely Hairfashion Team showcasing the Fire & Ice theme. It was followed by a short presentation from David Rosenblatt, Twincare’s General Manager who introduced Ivano Fusaro, Vice-President of Itely Hairfashion, who religiously travels every year from Italy to attend the Ace Quest competition. The audience of over 400 stylists, friends and family were treated to the creative ability of last year’s winner Bedva, who set the tone for the evening. The difficult task of choosing the winners of the night was handed over to the impressive judging panel that included Denis Randall, Gavin Botha, Michelle Whittal, Clinton van Rooyen and Debbie Nebbeling. Ace Stylist, the first category, required stylists to create an alternative and edgy street fashion style that was over the top without the use of hairpieces. This category was pre-judged before the show and the final score was totaled according to their stage work.

Contestants: - Sakkie Botha from Cortex - Nutrish Kok from Cortex - Tyrone Sweeney from The Image Junky - Gladness Fankomo from A Touch of Glamour - Jenne-lee Faber from Cathy’s Unisex - Jako van Niekerk from Style Boutique Winner: Tyrone Sweeney from The Image Junky Last year’s Ace Cutting Expert Jako van Niekerk created a surprise hair style on stage specifically for the Ace Cutting Expert 2011 category, which none of the stylists had seen before the event. Stylists were given 20 minutes on stage to duplicate the style on models they had never seen before and further time to finish the style with heat tools and products Contestants: - Brett CrawCour from 4Hair - Brandan Andrews from Head Masters - Cameron Sastri from Head Boys - Jenne-lee Faber from Cathy’s Unisex - Sakkie Botha from Cortex Winner: Sakkie Botha from Cortex Salon stylists joined forces in the Ace Salon category to create avant garde collections. The creative collaboration in this section of the show was fantastic and a pleasure for the audience to watch.

No hairpieces were to be used and the judges were looking for shiny, healthy and rich colour. Having been 100 percent pre-judged their decision was unanimous. Tyrone Sweeney from The Image Junky won and took a second award home for the evening! Well done to Biosense & Itely Hairfashion for once again hosting an evening filled with creative inspiration and congratulations to all the contestants and winners!

Season for

Care

Travel, long beach walks, laps in the pool. The same summer pleasures that make us feel healthy can wreak havoc on the health of our hair.

by Kendall Farr

sk any beauty-savvy woman about her skin care routine and you’ll get an earful. She’ll likely rave that her newest cleanser and moisturiser keep her face looking dewy, that a new power serum nourishes her skin at the cellular level and that her facialist is a ‘genius’ if you’d like her number. She’ll assure you that she never exposes her skin to daylight without SPF, but ask her about her hair care routine and it’s unlikely that she practices the same rigor in preserving the condition of what’s on her head and the result is dry, damaged, and colour-depleted hair. Summer hair protection used to mean days spent in a hat. While any hair stylist worth their shears will encourage clients to cover up their salon-perfected locks at the beach or pool, it’s now possible to swap the hat for a ‘veil’ provided by the newest wave of restorative cleansers, treatments and light filtering, leave-in conditioners.

Summer Sun “Hair products unlike skin products do not have SPF,” explains Robert Brown, Goldwell NAGA. “For a sunscreen to be effective it needs to be present on the hair at all times during sun exposure. Brown recommends Dual Senses Sun Reflects Leave-In Protect and StyleSign products containing maximum UVA/UVB filters. “It’s just like sun protection for the body. The second you get out of the pool or ocean, towel your hair and reapply your leave-in spray working it through the strands with a wide-toothed comb,” says Brown. Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydro-Cream Whip offers the tandem benefit of moisture from the lipid rich roots of the Hawaiian Awapuhi plant combined with KeraTriplex, a natural keratin blend with added UV protection. Aveda Sun Protective Care Hair Veil contains naturally derived UVA and UVB filters. “Which means they do just that - filter the sun’s damaging rays for up to 16 hours and can be reapplied as often as needed after swimming without weighing hair down, explains Wendy Prior the Director of Hair Care Education for Aveda.

Everyone loves fun in the sun, but remember that your hair needs as much protection as your skin! “I advise my clients to use sun protection for their hair,” says Sonna Brado KMS Artistic Director. “Solarperfection Shampoo and Solarperfection Survival Cream leave-in conditioner start the process, followed by Solperfection Beach Protectant which is designed to protect against both sun and water damage,” he adds. Colour fading- resulting in yellow or brassy tones - is all too common in the summer months. Blonde shades are particularly porous and vulnerable to the sunlight. “Hair that is heavily highlighted and lowlighted will tend to turn ‘white’ from sun exposure,” say Robert Brown who recommends using ColorGlow IQ Highlighted shampoo and conditioner in warm blonde “to prevent light tones from fading to off-tones.”

Poolside protection The sun may be lethal for colour but few things compromise hair quality like sustained exposure to chlorine. Or a shampoo in a hotel with hard water or old pipes and your colour can take a change for the green. While green hair works for ladies Ga Ga and Minaj, most

The haircare industry offers a wide range of products to protect hair and scalp from sun and chemical damage. They require regular attention in daily, weekly, and monthly beauty regimens.

Keratin has become a sort of miracle drug for damaged and stressed hair, sealing the cuticle for sleek and shiny locks

High-quality professional products target a wide range of problems, from scalp conditioning to colour fading to split ends, but remember to recommend regular trips to the salon every 4-8 weeks, depending on the amount of maintenance necessary.

of us prefer to avoid a mineral cast in our colour. Malibu C, the company that tends to the tresses of the USA Water Polo Team has developed Malibu C Swimmers Weekly Solution. Freshly activated Vitamin C removes the damaging effects of chlorine, hard water deposits like lime and environmental impurities by drawing them to the surface to be washed away. Chlorine combined with sun is also a culprit in scalp irritation like dryness or excessive oiliness. Excess sebum, dead skin cells, and layers of styling products all clog hair follicles. “Tightness, oiliness, sensitivity, or redness are all indications that it is time for a professional scalp treatment. It’s like a facial for the scalp.” Says Aveda’s Wendy Prior. According to Antonio Corral Moroccanoil Artistic Director “to maintain healthy hair use a scalp treatment at the end of every season.” He recommends Moroccanoil Dry-No-More Professional Scalp Treatment to reduce dryness and to invigorate the scalp to promote healthy hair or Moroccanoil Oil-NoMore Professional Scalp Treatment to increase circulation and regulate sebum production.

Restoring softness and shine Shiny hair is more than just an indication of good hair health, it is a style obsession. One of the most common salon complaints – especially in the summer months – is that hair looks dull and feels dry. Enter Keratin. “Keratin fills-in the empty spaces or ‘holes’ within the cuticle layers caused by chemical and environmental stressors,” says Doreen Guarneri, co-creator of American Culture, Simply Smooth. She recommends Smooth Keratin Replenishing Finishing Gloss and Replenishing Shine Spray both formulated to impart maximum shine. “Keratin is the best treatment for weak, lifeless, over-processed locks,” says Rafe Hardy, Artistic Director for Sexy Hair. “Reinvent Color Care Keratin Filler is applied with heat for 15 minutes using a hooded dryer. It’s designed to shield the hair shaft from the outside by lubricating and reinforcing the cuticle. It repairs damage from the inside by penetrating the hair cortex and depositing keratin proteins for stronger, shinier, and frizz free hair,” adds Hardy. Wella Professionals offers a ‘youth-booster’ in their Age Collection. Age Restore Shampoo and Age Restore Treatment are designed to nourish, revive and smooth-out course, mature hair with a combination of antioxidants and panthenol. “Wella Professionals’ Age Restore is great for those clients that have hair that has become unruly and wiry, and also for hair that loses humidity very quickly,” specifies Alex Matiz, Wella Color Ambassador, “in other words when hair gets gray your texture changes and hair becomes hard to handle. With the use of Age Restore your hair will feel more under control, soft and it will have the right balance of moisture.”

Regular maintenance Stepping up the frequency of hair trims should be a part of your summer fitness routine as well. After all, what good is a style that looks out of shape? “Ideally, hair should be trimmed every six weeks. If you’re a serial abuser of heat tools like blow dryers and flat irons, then every 4 weeks is a must,” says Sara Tomich, Redken Education Manager. “Extreme Anti-Snap is the perfect product for the scissor–phobic and for women who don’t like ‘fussy’ products. It keeps hair integrity intact, has UV filters and offers heat protection,” say Tomich. “A general rule of thumb: the more levels of colour away from the natural level then the more frequently hair needs trimming,” says Robert Brown of Goldwell. “Every 4 weeks for fine to medium textures and no more than 6-8 weeks for even the most pristine hair.” With the latest crop of revitalizing and light filtering miracle products, compromising the health and beauty of your hair to sun and fun are a thing of summers past.

American Culture

“Frequency of scalp treatments depends on several factors,” advises Ruth Roche, Pureology Colour Ambassador. “The first is climate. If you live in an area that is dry, this will not only dry out your hair, but your scalp as well. If you shampoo everyday, a scalp treatment once a week is ideal. I recommend using Pureology Hydrate HydraCure or Hydrate HydraWhip masques. If you shampoo a few times a week, a treatment every other week will do,” says Roche.

Her career at L’Oréal was already taking off when I first met her twenty years ago. Since then, her passionate love of hairdressing and professional prowess have left an indelible mark on every country she has worked in - attributes which will become clear in the following four interviews with top hairdressers. I also met An exclusively for Estetica - an event which was captured on film by the EsteticaNetwork lens and the Estetica iPad TV camera.

A prominent figure in the world of L’Oréal, An Verhulst-Santos is the Professional Products Division’s charismatic and innovative Worldwide General Manager – a role she performs with true passion. by Roberto Pissimiglia

1 02| E S T E T I C A S O U T H A F R I C A

RP: Let’s begin with a look at your career in L’Oréal, where you began twenty years ago in the Professional Products Division...

AV: Yes, and now here I am at 14 rue Royale in Paris, precisely where the L’Oréal story started more than a hundred years ago. Yes, I’m proud and very moved – it’s a great responsibility! I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside with great professionals who pushed me constantly to do even better, placing great faith in my ability – this helped me get where I am today – the head of this division. I started in marketing; then I was put in charge of the Dutch branch... that was a really important move for me! In Holland, the commercial approach is very important. The Dutch are sharp negotiators and it was a truly enriching experience from the point of view of making contacts with hairdressers who are real businessmen and creative minds. Then I went to Brazil, at my own request after gaining 13 years of experience in the western market... I wanted to see another side of hairdressing. I discovered hairdressers bubbling over with enthusiasm about making women more beautiful. After that, I went to the States where I discovered yet another aspect of the trade – the strong presence of distributors showed me how the American industry worked and allowed me to undertake a growth strategy based on acquisitions, vital for the development of our Group in the market.

I N T E R V I E W

After nine months in your new role as Worldwide General Manager of Professional Products Division, what’s your assessment of the situation?

My enthusiasm for this profession remains intact. I’m convinced that it’s the “best profession in the world”, whilst remaining aware of the high stakes. Hairdressers are talented artisans who play an important role in our society. Having said that, this formidable industry has to reinvent itself. I intend to help all hairdressers as they address this issue, a necessary debate in many markets. It isn’t just one single professional market – my experiences abroad have reinforced my opinion that this profession has many different realities and contexts. This complexity is precisely what renders my mission so interesting and wonderful. How do you view the growth of the industry worldwide?

I am convinced that beauty in the future will be professional and ever more varied – we need to encourage even more women to visit hair salons and professional centres. To do this, we need to make the salon a beauty destination, offering ultra-personalised services... that can only be performed in salons. In Brazil, I saw just how beauty salons are part of everyday life. The hairdressing sector, to my great regret, is much less dynamic than the beauty industry and this is something that must change. My aim is to find ways to accelerate it with massive innovation in products and services, just as we did with INOA in recent years. I will also try to stimulate salon retail as that has strong growth potential. The roles of designer and design are essential in this evolution. What action in this area is L’Oréal taking in hairdressing salons?

Making salons into beauty destinations is a priority. However, from this point of view, exceptional salons are still a rarity. Those who know how to create them must inspire others. Just look at other industries which have completely integrated this dimension into their services – the restaurant industry, hotel trade, leisure industry... They have all challenged their own ideas, in order to offer clients a true experience. In this sense, design plays an important role. It doesn’t need to be necessarily synonymous with luxury – it should be based on client comfort and wellbeing.

So that the salon visit becomes an “addictive” experience. What is L’Oréal’s task for the future in the hairdressing world?

Our role as a beauty leader is to provide the non-stop reinvention of hairdressing, the best industry in the world with a vocation to making women ever more beautiful – let’s never forget that! We have to reinvent our relationship with the consumer, find a new way to communicate this basic power that a professional hairdresser holds over our appearance and wellbeing. Our role is to help hairdressers to use and promote new methods of interaction with the public, such as social networks, and use these methods of communication to develop business as far as possible. In your opinion, what’s the effect of digital technology on hairdressing?

I think that digital technology is a wonderful support for our profession because it’s a means of communication that allows hairdressers to stay in contact not only with each other but also with their clients. If used well, it can benefit our industry greatly. This was proven recently with the launch of Salon

An Verhulst-Santos as seen by Jô Nasciemento - Brazil “When An became General Manager of Professional Products Division in Brazil, it was seen as a revolutionary choice. It was the first time a woman had gained such a high position of responsibility in Brazil. She exceeded all our expectations. Extremely competent and fair, An always asked a lot of her team but with immediate thanks. I was able to see the other side of An as well – the woman, mother and daughter. In my opinion, this Belgian lady is a little bit Brazilian inside – she has always identified with our country and was happy living here. I owe her a lot because any progress I have made in this industry is thanks to what I learned from her. And today she is in the highest position in L’Oréal. She deserves it!”

“Inspiring beauty professional from all over the world, transmitting innovation, education and business” An Verhulst-Santos as seen by Rossano Ferretti - Italy “I met An during her time in Brazil and my first impression was very good. She was there, busy doing a difficult job. Later, destiny brought us together again in the States, in New York when I opened my salon there, and again in Paris. I’m very fond of An and I admire her a lot. She has countless qualities and what I’ve always liked about her is her real wish to know and understand the world of hairdressing at all levels, from the top echelons to the most humble. She is a fighter and loyal, she goes straight to the point and doesn’t waste time in political manouevring, and this is remarkable for someone who, like her, has such a high position of responsibility. I consider myself very lucky to know someone like An, who loves to do things well and shares my same view of this industry’s objectives, working to fulfill them.”

An Verhulst-Santos as seen by Kris Sorbie - USA “The first time I met An, I was struck by her smile and particular accent. It was a bit as if we had always known each other. Her truly sincere concern for people, that’s what comes to mind when I think of her. Her energy, sensitivity and creativity, and also her strong belief in the strength of hairdressers to touch and transform the lives of others... all of this inspires me. She’s a fantastic leader with a true love of our industry. She was the one who launched the “Hairdressers Against AIDS” project in the United States. I’m proud to count her among my friends.”

World – over 2 000 hairdressers in France have already joined this online community which grows larger every day. We offer unique and useful services for their business, and we will continue to help professionals to make these new digital methods of communication and services their own. Hairdressers need to take advantage of them to develop a new type of dialogue with their clients, without ever forgetting the strength of that relationship (unique and privileged) that they establish every day in their salons via touch, visual contact and dialogue. These are links of inestimable importance, which digital technology can help to prolong and strengthen. Innovation remains an essential factor for market linkoniPad growth...

It’s true that our industry has to offer more innovation in terms of personalised salon services, as well as pioneering treatment, colouring and texture offers. The quality of diagnosis, advice and home support, as well as personalised service, are the keys to the success of our profession. Regarding products, we have just launched four ultra-innovative services to attract women and guarantee their client loyalty. Firstly, we are offering Fusio-Dose by Kérastase, a new technical service that contains highly concentrated active ingredients, prepared right in front of the client for guaranteed ultra-personalisation. We are also launching a revolutionary tone-on-tone service with Dialight and Diarichesse by L’Oréal Professionnel, based on two technologies (alkaline and acid), something totally new! Total Results by Matrix is also eagerly awaited, as it represents a quality treatment at very reasonable prices. Finally, Redken enters the hair-straightening market with Shape Control, and 2012 will be yet another year of innovation with new entries that, in my opinion, will be very popular with both hairdressers and clients. Mastering one’s profession means constant updating and training. What tools do you provide to fulfill hairdressers’ needs and wishes to improve constantly.

We provide professionals from all over the world with unequalled training opportunities. For example, thanks to L’Oréal Professionnel, about 4 000 hairdressers are trained every day, and 60 000 salons enjoy our training every year. A million professionals are involved in education programmes at our academies or during

i n t e r v i e W

our shows. Education is the basis of our development and also the key to the future in our trade. This includes both technical training and client communication skills. Also, I’ve found that often training plays an important social role. For example, through our institutes in Brazil and initiatives in Vietnam, we have set up schools that teach a profession to thousands of unemployed. In this way we contribute to a local micro-economy that helps the development of those regions. If my children came to me tomorrow and said they wanted to become hairdressers, I’d be truly happy, because I honestly think that it’s one of the best profession in the world.

world of fashion... My haircolour cannot be the same in both summer and winter. When we don’t like the way an outfit looks on us, we take it off as soon as we get home! Our hair is the most exterior aspect of our beauty, and this is why a hairdresser plays such an essential role – (s)he can change our lives by helping us to find our own personal style and being beautiful. For me the salon is a magic place, a place to live a true beauty experience. A place where I go for advice and inspiration.

The “Hairdressers Against AIDS” initiative is entering its tenth year. A decade in which both the company and professionals involved in the project have made tremendous efforts...

It’s been a decade of action with remarkable hard work and effort on the part of hairdressers and our entire network of educators around the world. It’s a subject close to my heart because I’m convinced that such an initiative can only enhance our profession by demonstrating in a concrete way the power of speech and of the relationship (often very close) that a hairdresser establishes with his/her clients. Thanks to the programme “Hairdressers Against AIDS” (now active in 30 countries), we help the prevention of AIDS by making the project high-profile all over the world – one and a half million professionals have been informed about the subject in the last six years and thousands of salons have taken part. In particular, on 1st December there is the Worldwide Aids Prevention Day. This means that thousands of messages and conversations have taken place on a subject that should be talked about even more to prevent the virus spreading further. In your opinion, what’s the “ideal hairdresser”? From the point of view of a woman and as a consumer?

An Verhulst-Santos as seen by Rob Peetoom - Holland “I met An Verhulst when she was General Manager in Holland. She came to my salon to celebrate my work with Redken and ever since then she’s been a friend. Then, it was time to change and she left Holland for Brazil, a country which gave her a lot in life. I’ve seen her career unfold in the beauty industry and I congratulate her on this latest position. She’s never let success go to her head, she’s remained sensitive and full of the joys of life. An is an all-round woman, creative and down-to-earth. She can bring together terms like work and talent. She always has time for others. One of my best memories of her is a trip to Portugal organised by L’Oréal for a European Championship football match – An, Belgian by birth, was sitting next to me and supported the Dutch team by wearing a ridiculous orange hat shaped like a cheese!”

How did you become part of Inoar Professional?

Bad hair days! Not really, I was in London when a dear friend and style icon, Gina Immerman, introduced me to her style secret called Inoar. With my unruly mop of curls, I was willing to try anything. After having a treatment, I tried to buy the product for myself because it was unheard of in South Africa, and through many twists and turns I became the sole distributor for Inoar in South Africa. The name Inoar keeps popping up everywhere these days, can you tell me a bit more about Inoar SA?

Inoar

Family Hendrien Kruger, CEO of Inoar Professional South Africa is passionate about her husband, children, and the hair industry. Hendrien tells us all about Inoar and why her job is not just another job. by Joha Niehaus

106| E S T E T I C A S O U T H A F R I C A

Inoar is a world leading brand in Professional Hair Treatments. The company was founded in 2000, by Ino Manuel – the most passionate woman I’ve ever met. She is just a wizard when it comes to hair treatments and formulations. Having unruly, ethnic hair herself, she set out to find a cure for hair problems, and as they say the rest is history. She was the first to develop the now acclaimed Brazilian Blow Dry. Wow, you surely sound passionate about the product, but when I hear ‘Brazilian’, all that comes to mind is the rumours of formaldehyde and cancer?

Unfortunately, when people hear Brazilian, they think of it as a general term, as if it’s all one and the same. The truth is, there are so many different brands out there, and they are all different in quality and content. As I’ve said before, Inoar is a treatment house. Only two of the eight treatment lines we distribute contain formaldehyde, and both these treatments are also available in formaldehyde free options. Formaldehyde is what makes the treatments stick; it makes hair smoother and ensures that treatment lasts longer. It’s the quantity that makes the difference. Ino spent years developing a formula with minimal chemical components. Our products only have trace element and is way below the allowed percentage. Inoar is approved in South Africa, Europe and Brazil. We have regular tests done, and if applied correctly there are hardly any fumes. It gives amazing results and has no effect on the hair colour like many organic products do. Nothing in the hair industry has ever been able to relieve frizz and colour damage like the combination of keratin and formaldehyde, without side effects that other products have. Inoar also has patent rights on all their formulas.

i n t e r v i e W

How long has Inoar been available in South Africa?

kit has a shampoo, conditioner, mask and oil. The oil and mask last you up to a year. It helps to maintain the condition of your hair by adding sufficient moisture.

Tell us more about the other Inoar products and what they are used for?

Are there any new and exciting things to look forward to?

Just over two years – and in my (modest) opinion, we will be the last Brazilian standing (laughs).

We have Moroccan and G-Hair which is very well known. Both are designed for colour damaged hair. They eliminate frizz, reduce volume 70 – 90 percent and makes the hair extremely easy to manage. Then there is Afro Keratin that we launched in August 2011. It is an organic relaxer for ethnic hair. Just to give you an idea – chemical relaxers have a pH of 8 plus. This treatment has a pH of 1, 5. It’s a progressive treatment that can be done on anyone and any age. It separates hair and allows hair to grow. It prevents the hair from breaking and falling out. Our Argan System is an organic alternative to the Brazilian. It contains white clay, argan oil and silicone. It’s designed for virgin hair – it reduces volume and frizz and gives unbelievable shine to the hair. Our Plastica Reconstructor is a booster treatment for in between Moroccans and will stretch your treatment to four months plus. It is also ideal for someone who just wants to get rid of frizz but still keep their curls. Inoar launched a teen line this year? How is it different to other treatments?

Yes, that’s right. It’s called Apple Jelly. Most treatments on offer are very high in keratin (protein), which is good for grown-up hair and not good on young, virgin hair. The Apple Jelly contains apple acids. It works wonders on frizz and smells divine. It’s a must for the active teen that does a lot of sport and swimming. It makes their hair very manageable and shiny. It’s a known fact in the industry that low sulphate shampoo should be used? Why, and what do you recommend?

Yes, that is very important. The salt in most shampoos open the cuticles which results in the loss of the treatment and colour. The more shampoo foams, the more salt it contains. We have two aftercare ranges. The one is the POS kit and the other an Argan Home Care kit. It’s not a secret anymore how amazing argan oil is for your hair. It has small molecules enough to penetrate hair. We sell the oil separate. The home care

Yes absolutely. Ino is not only passionate about her treatments, but also her charitable ventures which include the Inoar Foundation’s Beauty against Poverty. A big percentage of her turnover gets invested in uplifting underprivileged communities. She is very active in training individuals in these communities and doing hair treatments on those who can’t afford to go to salons. Inoar Brazil will soon be launching Beauty against Poverty in South Africa. Every woman deserves to feel beautiful. If there is one message that you would like to get across to clients, what would it be?

Helping someone look and feel beautiful is more important than just chasing sales and numbers. Treat each individual like they are a business on their own and really listen to your client’s needs. There is no greater satisfaction in this industry than a happy, satisfied customer. To find out more about Inoar products and services visit www.inoar.co.za

honeez Warrington, owner of Spoilt Hair & Beauty in Cape Town and stylist, Loryn Higginson, were the only two South Africans of thirteen hair stylists from all over the world who recently attended the prestigious Vidal Sassoon Salon Creatives course in London. The one and only, worldrenowned British hair stylist Vidal Sassoon presented this exclusive course. Spoilt’s aim is to bring the international haute couture hairstyle trends to South Africa and transform them into day to day looks for their clients. “Some of the styles are to extreme for the conservative South African market,” explained Shoneez and Loryn. “We will need to soften the trendy layered looks to create more balance.”

Salon

The Creative course helped stylists search for creative excellence and inspiration to achieve their personal best season after season looks. Stunning model presentations, fascinating lecturers, guided working sessions and in depth demonstrations were used to explain innovative cutting techniques and brand new colour trends.

When asked for a sneak peak on the up and coming trends and techniques, the ladies mentioned a very short, crisp graduation of hair for men, almost military sides with a variety of lengths on the top. For women a play of the fringe is back in style, but different to the old fringe, this season it includes an undercut, a short fringe playing hide and seek under the long front locks. “We think that South Africa is off the mark when it comes to international trends, but in reality we are not. As the only South Africans at the course, we could stand our ground and share our South African hair knowledge with other world profound stylists,” said Warrington. What hair colour trends were popular on the course?

Warm blonde tones are fashionable this summer, instead of the white blonde shades, as well as golden orange copper tones. The Ombre technique is very big

at the moment. Colour is generally darker at the roots through the mid-shaft and then gradually gets lighter from the mid-shaft to the ends. In London they call it edging. I’m sure there are lots of people who would love the opportunity to attend the Vidal Sassoon Salon Creatives course in London. How would one go about applying and what is the procedure?

I did a lot of research online on the Vidal Sassoon website. I then emailed requesting further information and received a prompt reply with all the necessary information on courses, prices and requirements. For specific courses you need specific qualifications and years of experience. Some of the courses are quite expensive. I paid R12 000 excluding flights and accommodation. Warrington also shares the top 5 Spring/Summer trends for 2011 presented at the course: • Waves: Curly hair is out on full display, following the reinvention of soft curls and beach waves. Layers can be added to enhance and style certain textures and light products can be used to create more controlled styles.

• The Bob: The bob has made a comeback, illustrating its style resilience with charm. Many versions have been created to suit all women and maintenance has been made easy with cuts that suit everyone. • Layers: Layered lengths with casual textures make for playful looks when coupled with a loose ponytail or a few accessories. Waves and curls can be added to create volume and movement and colour to create character and flair. • Ponytails: The drab, regular ponytail has fast been replaced by modern, more glamorous styles. A side swept ponytail with wispy pieces to frame the face goes perfectly for a casual day look, while a high ponytail with height accentuates the facial features beautifully. • All Natural Hair Extensions: All natural hair extensions can add variation and depth of colour to your hair, not to mention extra thickness. With natural hair extensions, you can still try almost any hairstyle.

We think that South Africa is off the mark when it comes to international trends, but in reality we are not.

Cindy Horton gets advice from local hairstylists on how to protect our hair from the harmful UV rays and the must-have styles and colours for the season.

W

.ith summer finally upon us, we can look forward to gorgeous sunny days spent lounging around the pool or relaxing on the beach. Unfortunately days spent in the sun means that our hair is exposed to external factors which can often be harmful to the condition of our hair. ESTETICA chats to local hairstylists Wayne Gates and Rory Sandilands on ways in which we can protect our hair and the latest trends this summer.

What are the hottest styles for this summer?

In terms of colour, what tones and techniques will keep us on trend? Wayne Gates, Owner, Wayne.com

Wayne Gates, Owner, Wayne.com

Our prediction for the summer is a true revival of iconic styles infused with a modern twist. Sassy curls with an abundance of tousled texture and minimal effort. Beachy braids and simple pony tails are also front runners in the summer style stakes. Rory Sandilands, Owner, Blo Hairdressing

The layered bob is hot this 110| E S T E T I C A S O U T H A F R I C A

summer, because of its length and versatility; it can be achieved on short and medium hair, is easily managed and always looks good. Then there is the ultra curl, which is cool and sexy on long layered hair as well as on a short layered bob. Natural curls are lovely when left to dry naturally with a leave in conditioner. I am still a great fan of short boyish looks which seem to fit all seasons.

Colour trends for summer, range between the deep and rich brunettes inspired by Kate Middleton to sandy, multi-tonal blondes of Kate Hudson, heavy slicing of colour, the art of ombre and the gradual transition of one colour at the root to another shade at the end. The visual impact for summer is, and will always be, the platinum bomb shell! Rory Sandilands, Owner, Blo Hairdressing

I love playing with colour, and summer is no exception, with a

I always recommend a leave in conditioner if you are going to be spending a lot of time in the sun. My favorite is Série Expert Absolut Repair from L’Oréal Professionnel. It contains enhancing ceramides and shine-perfecting agents which infuse a protective UV filter and helps repair, revive and immediately protects the surface of the hair.

Besides the effects of the sun, chlorine can also cause havoc with our hair. How can we prevent compromising the quality of our hair from exposure to chlorine?

Summer is all about fun in the sun. How can we protect our hair from the harmful UV rays? Wayne Gates, Owner, Wayne.com

Joico Essentials K Pak protective sun milk benefits the hair by filling in the holes burned into the hair by the sun. This leave in spray is formulated with Hydroxy Sun Complex to repair sun damaged hair and shield against further UV exposure.

Rory Sandilands, Owner, Blo Hairdressing

Mythic Oil is suitable for all hair types and is enriched with a special blend of avocado and grape seed oils. Its lightweight formula nourishes even the finest hair leaving it looking shiny and feeling nourished, and supple.

Wayne Gates, Owner, Wayne.com

Chlorine can have less than desirable effects on our hair. It can lead to discoloration and surface damage of the hair. To avert further damage I would recommend using Joico K Pak Chelating Shampoo after every swim to safely remove the chlorine. Rory Sandilands, Owner, Blo Hairdressing

Again, I would recommend using a leave in conditioner when swimming. This will form a barrier between the hair and the chlorine. Always shampoo and condition your hair soon after swimming. A masque treatment will help as well. What is the must have product this summer? Wayne Gates, Owner, Wayne.com

Our must have this season is the Moroccanoil Intensive Hydrating

o

mix of platinum highlights and honey low lights. The hues help boost the hairs depth. Two tone hair is very big this summer, not contrasting colours like the sixties but more blended shades, maybe a difference of 2 to 3 shades (making the top of the hair around the crown area a light brown and the rest of the hair a dark brown), this not only creates movement but texture as well.

Mask. With its “mud” like appearance, this unique product rehydrates, improves elasticity and restores manageability. If worked and left into damp hair, the Moroccanoil can create incredible movement, perfect for the beach!

Fever Team twins showcased styles that were inspired by the 50s and 80s.

Team Twins were in South Africa to present their Time Fever collection 2011. Cindy Horton reports back on the Cape Town event.

S

outh Africa was treated to the amazing technical abilities of world renowned stylists Harma Renting and Agnes Westerman from Team Twins. On Thursday, 22 September 2011, Trinity night club in Cape Town hosted the Goldwell Team Twins show. Harma, who started the Netherlands based salon 20 years ago with her twin sister, and Agnes Westerman, who began her career as Harma’s hair model, presented an inspirational show. The team introduced the audience to their Time Fever collection which was filled with 1950s glamour and a 80s twist. Hair colour varied from the cleanest blonde to violet black and from orange tones to intense red. The disconnected haircuts brought movement to the hair and a sense of fun and playfulness to the styles.

Models were clad in classic old school garments decorated with polka dots, ruffles, buttons and high waist pencil skirts. Popular primary colours and black and white contrast created a retro style. Harma’s passion for colour has recently won her the major hair colour award in the Netherlands for the fifth time and she holds seminars and lectures all around the world. The inspirational and creative show was a huge success and enjoyed by all.

World Design Capital

Cape Town has been named World Design Capital for the year 2014, ahead of fellow short-listed cities, Dublin and Bilbao. The sought-after accolade was awarded to the Mother City on the 26 October 2011, at the International Design Alliance (IDA) Congress in Taipei. Patricia de Lille, Executive Mayor of Cape Town, accepted the award on behalf of Cape Town, South Africa and the African continent. In her acceptance speech De Lille said: “The World Design Capital bid process and title have helped to bring different initiatives together and have made us realise that design in all its forms, when added together, creates human and city development.” The Cape Town Partnership started the World Design Capital bidding process over a year ago, on behalf of the City of Cape Town. A Bid Committee was tasked to frame the theme of the bid and to source content and case studies for the bid book. On 31 March 2011, the 465-page bid book was formally submitted to the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) in Canada, with the theme, “Live Design. Transform Life”.

Peta Prizes awarded to Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde Revlon Global Brand Ambassadors

As Brand Ambassadors for Revlon, Stone and Wilde will become the faces of new and existing Revlon products and will appear in global, multimedia campaigns that span television, print, in-store, and digital and social platforms. Both Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde have been awarded leading animal rights honours to highlight cruelty-free cosmetics. The two stars are the recipients of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Kind Choices Awards thanks to their new deals with Revlon. A spokesman for the animal rights groups tells WENN, “when Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde chose to partner with Revlon, they were signing on to represent one of the country’s first mainstream cruelty-free cosmetics companies. In 1990, more than 10 years before either Stone or Wilde landed their first acting roles, Revlon agreed to Peta’s request to permanently ban all product testing on animals. “For choosing to promote only cruelty-free cosmetics, Emma Stone and Olivia Wilde have both earned a Kind Choices Award from Peta. They will each receive a framed certificate”.

Christi Panagio will be turning up the heat this summer as the face of Garnier Nutrisse’s new glamorous Honey Blonde Collection. Christi is no stranger to Garnier Nutrisse, having been a spokesperson for the brand since March 2010. Her striking good looks that easily double as bubbly girl next door and sultry siren have positioned her well to represent Garnier Nutrisse’s range of radiant blonde hair colours. Christi follows a long line of strong brand representatives that includes Hollywood hottie Sarah Jessica Parker and local beauty Michelle Botes, and much like them, she shines both on camera and off. Christi originally studied drama but soon found herself pursuing a career as a fulltime model. She returned to her acting roots a few years later when she was offered a role on the popular local soap, 7de Laan, playing Karien Momberg. Christi is currently a freelance field TV presenter, working on shows like Glitterati and Pasella, and runs her own interior design and décor business, Little Miss Decorator. Christi truly shines as the face of Garnier Nutrisse’s new collection.

Great Lengths Spring/Summer Collection – Pony Tails

Pony Tails; a look for every season. Use Great Lengths 50cm extensions for added length. The beauty of this trend is that it can be worn in a number of ways. Slightly backcombed the hair at the root area and gently smooth away from the face for a soft, sleek and glamorous effect. The Great Lengths cushion brush is used to achieve this style.

Great Lengths Spring/Summer Collection – Buns

Ballet buns and buns of all creations are making their mark on the fashion scene. Easy to create for summer looks, wear them high or low into the nape of the neck, buns can be neat for the real ballet bun, or messy and loose to show off natural texture. Oversized buns made a big impact at the Paris Fashion week for the Spring/Summer collection 2011. Add Great Lengths extensions for extra volume, pile the hair high into a messy bun for casual parties, or a neat ballet bun for a glamorous evening do’s. Make the bun an accessory this summer.

Great Lengths Spring/Summer Collection – Plaits

Side plaits are always a summer favourite; the fish tail plait is on trend for this season and loose wisps that fall from the plait are just as trendy. Alternatively incorporate braids into updo’s, this style is perfect for parties, evening events and summer brides. Create the half mermaid look by using Great lengths 50cm extensions to add extra length and volume. Loosely braid or fish tail the hair to the side. The end result should be effortless and relaxed.

The Laque Substantif is a protective spray with active anti-oxidants. The Systéme Pro-Supplenium and Anionic Fixing Polymer penetrates the hair fibre delivering essential minerals into the hair to address porosity, repair the cuticle and provides energy to the root. After the hair has been blow dried and styling is complete, spray evenly over the hair.

The Hannon Miracle Hair Treatment is suitable for extremely dry, thirsty and porous hair which needs a regular miracle. |Wand-a-brush

8

The new Wand-a-brush blow dry brushes with detachable handles will assist you with blow-drying your hair. The large openings allow more hot air to pass through the brush, drying the hair rapidly and thereby minimising heat exposure. The unique detachable handle lets you leave the brush in your hair after styling each section allowing your hair to cool on the brush. Simply detach the handle by lightly pushing against the lip of the brush with your thumb and then easily attach a new brush head to continue styling. The brushes are available in three different sizes – small, medium and large. The result is hair with body and bounce.

12

Inoar Argan Oil System

The Inoar Argan Oil System contains the Kem3 Complex with argan oil and glyoxylic acid, the substitute of formaldehyde. Kem3 Complex is a formula patented by Inoar, which allows the sealing of the cuticles through the attraction between the positive charge deposited in the hairs cortex, located in the centre of the strand, and the negative charge of the cuticles, which lie in the outer part of the strand. This is followed by the setting composed of acidic pH 1.5 in the cuticle, allowing the durability of the smooth effect and shine for up to 60 days. With 70 - 80 percent volume reducing action, this treatment is ideal for children, pregnant and lactating women. When properly maintained, the treatment should last up to two months.
