Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. At Spearfish take I-90 Exit 14 to U.S. Hwy 14A (Spearfish Canyon). You will encounter 20 miles of limestone cliffs, Spearfish Creek, Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls, and on to Cheyenne Crossing. At Hwy 85 either left to Lead @ 7 mi. or right to Four Corners, Wyo. @ 27 mi. A drive through Spearfish Canyon is one of the three great Black Hills Drives. In some parts of the canyon, the rim is nearly a thousand feet above the road which runs beside Spearfish Creek. Highlights are the Bridal Veil Falls, Homestake Power Station and Roughlock Falls which are about a mile off the main road at the head of the canyon. The park at Roughlock Falls is where the last scenes in the film "Dances With Wolves" was filmed. Also, look closely for an old railroad cut that climbs high up the east canyon wall. The rock cut is 400 feet above the canyon floor.

Mt. Rushmore. From Rapid City and follow Highway 16 southwest to Keystone and then Highway 244 to Mount Rushmore. Visitors coming from the south should follow Highway 385 north to Highway 244, which is the road leading to the memorial. The World’s greatest carving is in Black Hills. The faces are 60 feet high and are 500 feet from the base of the solid granite monolith. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the project on the 6,200 ft. Mount Rushmore in 1927. Fourteen years later the $1,000,000 masterpiece depicted the four presidents, Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, It is deemed priceless.

Vanocker Canyon. At Sturgis take I-90 Exit 32 and go south to Vanocker Canyon Road/Hwy.170. This is 19 miles of pure motorcycle heaven to Nemo Road. Left to the town of Nemo or right on Nemo Road 11 miles to Hwy 385 and your choice of Deadwood @ 5 mi. to the right or Hill City @ 37 mi. to the left.

Cascade Falls. When you’re in the Southern Hills visit Hot Springs and Cascade Falls It is only 10 miles south. Take the truck bypass, US 17 and just before the Mammoth Site, you will see the signs for SD Hwy 71. You will pass through the old town of Cascade, an early 1900’s resort town. Just as you get through Cascade, the terrain changes and goes from Black Hills to an arid region. Shortly you will see the sign, picnic tables and a restroom. Stop there and walk a few yards and you will be looking down at Cascade Falls. It is a great out of the way ride.

Devil’s Tower Run. From Sundance, WY. Take I-90 Exit 185 on to Hwy 14 to Carlile Junction @ 21 mi. Right on Hwy 24 to Devils Tower @ 6 mi. On to Hulett, WY @ 10 mi. Continue on Hwy 24 to Aladdin, WY @ 24 mi. Continue east on to Belle Fourche SD @18 mi. or south to Beulah, WY @ 14 mi.

Custer State Park. You will need a park pass for this ride. At Hill City go south on US Hwy 385 @ 3 mi. to SD Hwy 87 (the second turnoff). Follow signs to Sylvan Lake Lodge & Harney Peak. Continue @ 16 mi. on Hwy 87 to the Needles Hwy and the “Eye of the Needle. On to Hwy 16A going by the State Game Lodge, Park Headquarters. & Visitors Center.

Iron Mountain Road. There are at least 3 ways to get to Iron Mountain Road. It is actually US Highway 16A and is the long, scenic route to Custer. Take Hwy 79 south of Rapid City @ 15 mi. to Hermosa. Then take SD Hwy. 36 on the right toward Custer State Park. Just as you get to the park US Hwy. 16A goes to the north and winds for about five miles to the top of Iron Mountain -- hence the name. You will pass through three tunnels and over two pigtail bridges. Each of the three tunnels frame a view of Mt. Rushmore. At the top of Iron Mountain you can pause at a scenic overlook from one of the highest points in the southern Black Hills. For the next 12 miles the highway slowly descents after a series of hairpin turns into Custer State Park. You will probably encounter buffalo on this ride. Turn right for Kewstone for left on SD Hwy 244 for Mount Rushmore.

Wind Cave. When you head back north from Hot Springs on SD Hwy 71, turn at Prairie Dog Village in Wind Cave to SD 87. You will encounter more buffalo. Eventually, you will be in Custer State Park. You can go north to the Wildlife Loop or to US 16, Custer and US 385.

Sheridan Lake Road. Just another way to get to or from Rapid City. From Jackson Blvd./SD Hwy 44 turn left onto Sheridan Lake Road. It twists and winds for @ 20 miles to US Hwy 385. You will go over the Spring Creek Bridges, about six bridges. There is a very serious right hand turn, so be careful. Don’t go to fast.

Neck Yoke Road and SD HWY 40. Start across from reptile Gardens, follow the signs for Hart Ranch. You’ll be on Neck Yoke Road. Hart Ranch Road turns off to the left you continue up the hill for about eight miles. At the stop sign, you’ll be on Old Rockerville/Keystone Road. There will be loose gravel at that stop sign. Turn left you’ll go down a hill and watch out for that right turn at the bottom of the hill. Not much warning, and it’s wicked. About five miles farther, you’ll come to a second stop sign. You’ll be on S.D. 40. Turn left (unless you want to go to Keystone). Now, you’ve got about 15 miles of road that feature sweeping curves and steep hills. This road was made for serious bikers to enjoy. You’ll come out in Hermosa. You can either continue south to S.D. 36 and to Custer State Park, or north 15 miles to Rapid City.
