WHAT IF


SITE PLAN & MANIFESTO House of Wisdom in Baghdad destroyed during the Mongol Invasion, 1258. “Painter on His Way to Work” by Vincent Van Gogh, destroyed during WWII, 1945. The Gates if Nineveh, destroyed by ISIS, 2016. Humans are capable of both creating extraordinary artworks and destroying them in a blink. After thousands of years’ conflicts and wars, world leaders have come to an agreement that the senseless destruction of artworks and cultural heritage has to come to an end. In a UN conference, Australia has declared itself as a permanent neutral country and will not take part in any future international conflicts. Following this decision, Australia become an ideal sanctuary for artwork from all over the world, especially from the regions under the threat of constant conflicts. Melbourne quickly stands out among all Australian cities thanks to its long emphasis on culture, which leads to the arrival of waves of artifacts. This become an opportunity for local authorities to properly utilise these valuable products of human culture and truly establish Melbourne as the world’s cultural capital. In order to accommodate this need, the ARTK is commissioned.

WEEK 1 OCEAN HOME Overall, this was a fun start of the semester, but also a bit overwhelming in terms the amount of work that need to be put into it. I literally made a piano and a guitar in rhino with blueprints. Also, after designing something more conservative in the first half of the week, I went for a more ambitious approach and put my “ideal house� on a boat. This ambition would be carried on throughout the semester.

WEEK 2 THE SKY LOUNGE This time, instead of a boat, I went with a flying cafĂŠ/bar, which has substitutable parts. This is also testing out the idea of having the same space functioning differently at different times, which fits the key ideas of the studio at this point. I also looked at several precedents, both from the real world and movies. This would be the beginning of a semester of precedent spamming. Also, I just love symmetric.


THE SKY LOUNGE

The Sky Lounge flies above THE ARK, with switchable units that allow it to be a café during the day and quickly transform into a bar when night falls. who doesn't want a cup or coffee or whiskey with a great aerial view? JINGHENG QIAN 813066

WEEK 3 CYBERPUNK +

HAPHAZARD VS EFFICIENT

The idea of a mixed tower that contains everything quickly reminds me of cyberpunk settings in movies/video games and so on. What can I say, I’m a bit of a nerd (but not quite). However, as an architecture student, I NEVER want to deliberately design anything that is INHARENTLY bad. This is about my morale I guess, because I can never quite understand “critique” project that are not necessarily bad designs but delivers bad environments or facilitate bad behaviours on purpose. So, regarding cyberpunk, this is clearly a setting that is “bad”, and I want to harness the concept but without its grim and dystopian mood, thus the concept of Cyberpunk+. At the core of a cyberpunk setting, there is always this overarching mega corporations that controls pretty much everything. So, what I did here is to remove that and give people endless clean energy and free people from the oppression of big capitals (not giving names here but anyone can think of many. This is our bizarre reality). I guess I always wanted to use whatever power I can to make things better, at least in concept. This project turned out to be quite successful and I quite liked many aspects of it. However, this led to some detours in the coming weeks.

WEEK 4 KEEP TESTING & DETOURS This week we struggled a bit when trying to combine old and new ideas together and keeping part of the previous design. In the end, it was a bit like going in circles. We were exhausting possibilities, but we are not necessarily moving forward, but going in circles on the same level. It was time do deduction and remove some of the ideas and only focus on a few in the future.

WEEK 5-7 MID SEMESTER PROJECT - ARKOPOLIS I think we had a pretty good project for mid semester. It had issues, true, and we were still trying to work with just a bit too much ideas, but I think at the core, this is architecturally a decent project. I was just a bit frustrated that we barely had time to discuss the architecture at all during the crit as the guests spent almost all the time talking about the setting, which is admittedly problematic, but really wasn’t that important for the project. World is in chaos, people seek shelter, simple as that. So the economic crash is, again, admittedly a bit out of place, but I was just trying to come up with something disastrous but without ruin the whole earth. Also, since we wanted to provide shelter for people while preserving culture, this might be a bit too much as they can sometimes be different things. But are they really? Without people there would be no culture/civilisation either. I needed time to think about a way that is clearer and less confusing.

WEEK 7-9 ARTSY Now that we decided to shelter artifacts instead of people, the purpose of the ark become much clearer, and perhaps quite a bit different from other group’s projects. We an basically get rid of residential if we want to, but I decided to still have a sort of hotel program in it due to the enormous size of the project. In these few weeks, we looked at a ton of precedents, some of them really inspirational, and started making sort of kit of parts for our project again, as our project has become so different, almost none of the ones we previously had as a class applies to our project anymore.

WEEK 10 DEVELOPMENT OF FINAL PROJECT The project’s concept, architecturally, is the combining, dividing and clashing of different masses. Circulation would be crucial as most of our project is exhibition space. Thus, it is important to consider how people would navigate through the space, at what speed and what other needs they would have. It is also important to make the other functions of our building interesting. For example, the art school, which started as just another block, was eventually integrated into the building and scattered around the building. We also need to consider scale and site. Scale was one the issues that was brought up during the mid-semester presentation, as the height-width ratio seems a bit off. I had this same issue at the beginning of the massing process as the building footprint was too big, but I later fixed that. Regarding siting, we originally wanted to be a replacement of the NGV, and be better and bigger than it. But hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So eventually we decided to make our project as an addition. We also struggled a bit about the narrative at the beginning, as we couldn’t quite sort out the cause and effect relationship between Melbourne having this ark and artifacts coming to Melbourne. If the ark comes first, then it has to be super good for people to bring their stuffs here, thus we would have to “claiming to be the Guggenheim”, which would be risky. If the artifacts come first, then there should be a reason for it. I then thought, maybe if Australia decides to become a neutral country, being an island country positioned right between the east and the west (culturally speaking), it would actually make a lot of sense. Like, Australia had no reason to get involved into the Trump trade war against China, but the Australian government did it anyway, which is kinda silly. By becoming neutral, Australia could actually profit a lot from it, let alone the safe environment. So among all the groups in the class, this project is perhaps the most realistic one, not to say that is either good or bad, but just stating the fact about its nature. Thus, although this is still a fantasy project, it would be perhaps somewhat a bit more realistic and actually has a site.
