Campus Visits

No one would buy a buy a car without taking it for a test drive, and you should follow the same approach in deciding which college or university to attend. Students are encouraged to take the College of Agriculture and UK for a test drive by coming to campus for a visit. During that visit, you will have the opportunity to meet with a faculty member and maybe sit in on a class, take a student-led tour of the College of Agriculture campus, and learn more about the many opportunities available to students. If you are interested in a campus visit, contact the College at 859-257-3469 two to three weeks in advance. A visit may also be scheduled online at www.ca.uky.edu/students. College of Agriculture visits are scheduled for Mondays and Fridays. You are also encouraged to stop by the UK Visitor Center for a complete look at the university. To schedule a visit to main campus, log on to http://www.uky.edu/VisitorCenter.

Agricultural Biotechnology

The Agricultural Biotechnology Program is for highly motivated, ambitious, career-oriented students who wish to pursue opportunities in human health,

agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. In this major, you will gain a strong grounding in the life and physical sciences, be mentored by exceptional scientists, and gain valuable hands-on experience in cuttingedge research. You will study

important core concepts in chemistry, biology, and genetics. With the help of your academic advisor, you will individualize your course work in a science area tailored to your career goals. Once your course work is under way, you will develop your own research project

with the help of a research mentor of your choosing. The combination of course work and significant research experience will provide you with many career opportunities in the broad field of biotechnology and also prepare you for graduate studies in the life sciences or other professional degree programs. You will be well positioned for a rewarding career in the agricultural and food sciences or to advance to training in human or veterinary medicine or fields such as pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry.

Agricultural Economics

When you major in agricultural economics, you’ll learn marketing, management, leadership, and problem-solving—skills needed for careers in the agribusiness and food industries, credit and finance, equine industries, and farm management and production. Food production through agriculture is not just a global business, it’s a necessity of life, so politics, law, environmental issues, natural resources, and international trade are all important in this major. In many ways, agricultural economics is like a business major, but with more emphasis on the big picture of agricultural markets and policy and with more hands-on analysis of agricultural data. In addition to economics, the major offers multiple law classes and courses in topics such as entrepreneurship and human resource management. Graduates take jobs in a truly wide range of industries and are well-prepared for MBA and other graduate school programs and law school. Participation in the UK Agribusiness Club and internships are good ways to complement your course work with real-world activities. If you enjoy managing and motivating people, making decisions, managing financial resources, or finding a more effective way to complete a project, you should consider a major in agricultural economics.

Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is the original “green” profession. In this age of increasing environmental concerns, landscape architecture is at the core of a sustainable future. It is a profession concerned with creative stewardship of land, the design of sustainable human communities, and the aesthetic

quality of places. Most landscape architects work in consulting firms, and smaller numbers work in public agencies, universities, and in design-build firms. The scale of their work ranges from regional planning for green infrastructure to the design of very small urban sites. The majority of landscape architects’ work is in the development of urban, suburban, and rural properties for new educational, commercial, residential, and

recreational uses. Landscape architects are engaged in site planning and site design for these projects and work closely with environmental scientists, architects, engineers, and regulatory agencies. Their work requires design sensibility, technical skill, environmental awareness, and the ability to work with people. As a landscape architecture student, you will be part of an educational experience in which science and

art, ecology and technology, social concerns, and creative expression come together. The five-year undergraduate program at UK is the only accredited landscape architecture program in Kentucky. The curriculum provides you with courses and experiences that will allow you to conceptualize, design, and communicate your vision for the future of the world’s human environment as a professional landscape architect.

Service Learning

Being a world citizen brings with it certain responsibilities, so service learning is a key component of a UK education. We want to make sure our students fully develop their potential to become community leaders and give back to society. Service learning is incorporated through an environment that supports community service and development, volunteerism, career shadowing, and internships. Some students have helped raise money for UK DanceBlue, a 24-hour dance marathon that benefits the UK Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Unit. Others may get involved in UK FUSION, a one-day service event during KWeek. All UK students, faculty, and staff have an opportunity to start off their school year in a positive way by volunteering for three hours at a local non-profit agency or area neighborhood residence. Each year FUSION volunteers positively impact the community by providing over 2,800 hours of service in one day! The value of internships can also help guide students in their personal interests and future well-being.
