The 2008 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference (NAC)

he 2008 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports Conference (NAC), sponsored by the American Association of Airport Executives, will explore in depth the preparations airport officials need to make as the industry adjusts to drastic increases in oil prices, on top of changes in the economy, in aviation security and in federal regulation. This year’s NAC theme, “Flying High Through Turbulent Times,” highlights the complex issues that face the airport community today: airline shutdowns, fuel prices on the rise, federal funding, environmental mandates, safety management system plans, ground handling, succession planning, and the particular concerns that must be addressed when hosting special events. Roundtables will feature TSA and FAA officials who will conduct an open dialogue with NAC delegates. Further, guest speakers will share the latest news about their companies and the impact this news will have on your airport. The NAC is built upon the popular small group discussion format, which allows participants to discuss and debate numerous technical and management topics in an informal setting. Special roundtables structured by airport size also will allow delegates to share information in a relaxed environment.

The mentor program, another mainstay of the NAC, will be offered again to provide new members of the airport management community the opportunity to learn about the industry and the NAC through interaction with seasoned veterans. The NAC will begin with a welcome reception on Sunday evening, September 7, and conclude on Tuesday, September 9, with a series of drawings for great giveaways! You must be present to win, so plan to stay! An optional tour of Reno-Tahoe International Airport will be offered on Wednesday morning, September 10. Space on the tour is limited to 50 persons, so don’t wait to sign up! Golf, Sports and the outdoors

With a population of more than 211,000, Reno is the largest city in northern Nevada. Located in the southern part of Washoe County, the city is nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an area called the Truckee Meadows.

Reno offers 40 golf courses and the highest concentration of ski resorts in North America, all within 90 minutes of Reno-Tahoe International Airport. With world-famous Lake Tahoe just a short drive away, visitors can enjoy the crystal blue waters and pristine natural beauty of one of the deepest alpine fresh water lakes in the world.

The Truckee Meadows and surrounding area provide unlimited indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Spectacular Lake Tahoe and the largest concentration of ski areas and ski facilities in the world are all within a 50-mile radius. Biking, camping, hunting, fishing and mountain climbing are all activities that Reno residents and visitors enjoy. To the west, visitors can enjoy Lake Tahoe’s crystal clear water from one of its two fullsize paddlewheel boats, take the breakfast hayride at the historic Ponderosa Ranch, or catch a play at the Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor. To the south, Virginia City will take visitors back in time 100 years to the site of the world’s richest silver strike and the largest historical district in the U.S. Reno-Tahoe is also an ideal home base for side trips to the great American West. Visitors can explore the gold country, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, the Wine Country and California’s beautiful northern coast. All of these excursions are only a few hours away, making RenoTahoe the perfect starting place to explore the West.

Shopping

Reno-Tahoe offers a wide variety of shopping experiences to suit all kinds of shoppers, from big spenders to bargain hunters. Reno is home to an enormous Patagonia outlet store situated within Patagonia’s Main Distribution Center. This $19 million, 171,000-square-foot building is located on the banks of the Truckee River.

Cabela’s stores are known as premier shopping and tourism destinations, drawing visitors from miles away. Reno’s 125,000-square-foot, large-format destination store is located near the Boomtown Hotel Casino on I-80 near the California border (8650 Boomtown Road, Verdi, Nev.). Located in the area of Reno’s Truckee River Whitewater Park is the Truckee River Arts District. Plan to visit both the CalAve and Riverwalk sections of the district for unique shopping excursions to specialty shops, antique stores, boutiques and galleries. This area is quickly becoming Reno’s preeminent neighborhood retail, restaurant, entertainment and business district. Reno has numerous shopping areas with upscale boutiques and specialty stores tucked into quaint neighborhoods throughout the city .

Restaurants

Reno-Tahoe has more four-star restaurants per capita than San Francisco or New York. From family-style Basque restaurants to intimate French bistros to boisterous microbreweries, Reno-Tahoe offers a unique variety of dining experiences.

The mentors are responsible for acclimating new attendees. By being paired with a mentor, first-time attendees have a better opportunity to experience both the formal and informal gatherings at the NAC. Airport benchmarking and performance measurement are thoughtful tools used by airport executives to define success. A number of airports have established formal performance measurement systems to maximize the use of their resources, while remaining focused and strategically aligned. In this challenging economy, the aviation sector has been impacted by merger announcements, bankruptcies and high fuel costs. As a result, some airports are restructuring their management practices to mirror those of private corporations.

Using case studies presented by airports, expert instruction and discussion groups, attendees will learn how to use airport performance measures and benchmarking to leverage core competencies and strengthen areas for improvement as a result of a well-rooted self-awareness concept of the airport’s overall performance. Attendees also will learn how to integrate airport performance management to IT systems specifically designed to track airport measures. Finally, attendees will receive tips on how to provide an airport’s management team with timely, meaningful information that will improve performance, organizational productivity and staff buy-in. The workshop will provide insights into emerging techniques regarding airport performance measurement and benchmarking, such as: • The Art of Airport Benchmarking • Developing Best Management Techniques for Performance Measurement • The Relationship between Performance Measurement and Customer Service, Operations, Costs and Revenues • Airport Industry Trends • Understanding the Relationship between Performance Measurement and IT Systems • Developing/Integrating an Airport Performance Measurement System • Operating Optimally Under Uncertain Economic Conditions All sessions will take place at the Peppermill Resort Casino in Reno.
