I am Jarla Thiesbrummel, and I am in the second year of my bachelor chemical engineering. Also, I am enrolled in the applied physics bachelor as a first year student. I am nineteen years old and I was born in Veldhoven, only a few kilometers away from where I live now. My hobbies are speed skating, inline skating and everything that has something to do with that. I am an active member of the student speed skating association where I will try to organize a Dutch student championship this year. But I am also active at the TU/e; I was a member of the first year committee of Japie last year and I am currently involved in the founding of a study association for the honors academy of the TU/e.

Since I always liked reading the T-Licht and because I wanted to be an active member of Japie again, I decided that it would be a nice idea to join the editorial board.

The past, the present and the future

Students are right about their own opinion

Last March we got a visit from the first chairman of Japie.

It was a very special day, because we got to know some very interesting things about the beginning of Japie. It was obvious that some habits are still the same, some habits have changed a lot and I’m already curious to know how the habits of Japie will be in the future. Thus, the last article I’ll be writing will be about the experience we had meeting the first chairman and at the same time about my successor for the upcoming year.

s I mentioned before, a few months ago we had the honor of welcoming the first chairman of Japie. We started the day with a cup of coffee at the Japieroom to get to know each other a bit better.

There was a very relaxed atmosphere from the beginning till the end and it seemed that everyone immediately felt at home. Quickly subjects such as the beginning of Japie came up for discussion. We got to know that in the beginning, the first student association of Eindhoven had a lot of influence on starting study associations. For example, when the first Japie board tried to have a board meeting, some, and I quote, “koorballen”, came to interrupt the meeting. But as we all know chemical engineers are smart, so they moved the board meeting to Friday morning nine o’clock. At this time the student of the student association was still recovering from the night before and so they had all the time they needed to have a board meeting.

Anyway, it seemed that there was some kind of snowball effect of beginning associations, because the establishment of the first four boards all took place in 1957.

We also got to know that some things never change. Nowadays when we talk about people who study mechanical engineering we call them “fietsenmakers” and apparently they have called them this for a very long time. I think you can imagine

it was kind of funny to hear the first chairman of Japie ask about the “fietsenmakers”. Even the trip to Maastricht after changing the board is something that is being done since the beginning. Apparently Japie went to visit the Jan Pieter Minckelers statue at the first day of September from the very beginning. There even are some pictures in the Japie archive of one of the first visits. This tradition will soon be repeated, given the fact that my successor is already busy preparing himself for next year. As you are probably wondering who he is, he will introduce himself in the last part of this article.

After a full cycle of Bachelor College, the Bachelor College was evaluated. The evaluation was done by Ruth Graham, who has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and has her own company which evaluates education throughout the world. To me, the evaluation confirmed almost everything that I have been hearing the past year as coordinator of education, yet there were a few big surprises.

T

he first thing Ruth Graham pointed out is that she had never seen such a big change for an educational system in such a short time as on the TU/e. Very soon it became clear that the goals to attract more and also more diverse students were already achieved. Besides concluding that the goals, which were defined at the introduction of the Bachelor College, would probably all be achieved, she also pointed out concerns and recommendations.

Most of the recommendations were nothing more than a reference to the points students have been pointing out ever since the introduction of Bachelor College. The biggest problems were found with interim tests, professional skills, USE and basic courses. These are subjects students have talked to me about quite a lot. The funny thing is that teachers apparently dislike these things even more.

My name is Camiel Steffanie and I’m 20 years old. Three years ago, I left Limburg to live in Eindhoven and to start my bachelor. Now, I’m already finishing up my bachelor project.

After these years, I realized time flies and interests change a lot. Before, I spent time playing the drums and renovating oldtimer mopeds with my friends. Nowadays, most of my week consists of studying, cooperating in a committee, activities with Japie or just enjoying life with my

The most unexpected recommendation was that the basic course Design, the course with the worst rating of all courses given in the past three years, should be used as flagship to promote Bachelor College. and she recommended to not let Bachelor College interfere with these extracurricular activities.

Another thing that got me thinking about this evaluation is the reaction from the Dean and the Rector.

For three years coordinators of education have been telling them where the problems are found and some advantages were gained on these subjects to help the students.

Now there is hard data that show that these commissioners have been telling the truth all along and finally bigger changes seem to be coming.

This year students’ input on year meetings and the STuRa have been very helpful to me and it has really helped to further improve the education on this faculty and even university. The feedback from students is a necessity. What I have experienced this year is that teachers, the Director of Studies and the Deans listen well to students’ input and value their opinions. Making good arguments and sometimes, when necessary, making a fist, will lead to changes within the education.

As our opinion already makes a difference, an even bigger difference can be made when statistics show that change is necessary. People tend to listen sooner when students are able to show that there is a problem besides just telling. It is a shame that there are so many evaluations and surveys that students get tired of them and refuse to fill them out.

Filling out these surveys however can sometimes, make an even bigger difference.

My year as coordinator of education is coming to an end and this is already my last article. It is time for the candidate commissioner to introduce himself: My name is Troy Oude Bekke and I intend to fulfill the position of coordnator of education next year.

The reason I want to do this is because the quality of education at the department of coordinator of education is at a high level and I want to maintain this level. This requires a lot of communication between me, the department, and of course, you.

I wish to learn a lot next year and I’m really looking forward to it!

De wereld om ons heen neigt naar een steeds groter wordende staat van chaos (entropie). Om te voorkomen dat de chaos ergens groter wordt, moet je er energie in steken. Dit zal ik volgend jaar veelvuldig moeten proberen om ervoor te zorgen dat de F.O.R.T. goed kan draaien. Echter, een gebrek aan chaos is ook niet goed. Een entropie van nul zorgt er namelijk voor dat alles stil staat. Ik moet dus een goede inschatting van het evenwicht tussen veel en weinig chaos gaan maken. Daarnaast zegt entropie iets over hoe verschillende energieniveaus gebruikt worden.

Ik moet hierin ook zorgen dat de entropie niet te laag wordt, om ervoor te zorgen dat ik op veel verschillende niveaus van de faculteit mijn contacten onderhoud.

Ik, Guido, zou volgend jaar graag de taak van voorraadbeheerder op me willen nemen en wil me graag voorstellen aan de hand van een reactie; de redoxreactie.

Bij redoxreacties heb je veel verschillende toepassingen, waarvan één het maken van vuurwerk is. Omdat er veel verschillende redoxreacties zijn, kan je ook veel verschillend vuurwerk maken. Dit is mooi, want als er maar één soort en kleur vuurwerk was, dan zou het een beetje saai worden. Het mooiste is om verschillende soorten vuurwerk te hebben en ditzelfde geldt voor het assortiment aan bieren in de F.O.R.T.; hoe gevarieerder, hoe beter.

Momenteel is het assortiment natuurlijk al zeer gevarieerd, maar het kan altijd uitgebreid worden. Daarom zou ik graag voorraadbeheerder willen worden, om iedereen te voorzien van vele verschillende biertjes.

Ik, Jules, zou volgend jaar graag de taak van activiteitencoördinator op me willen nemen en ik zou me graag willen voorstellen aan de hand van het begrip activeringsenergie. Het organiseren van gezellige activiteiten kost nou eenmaal wat moeite en niet alles zal de eerste keer meteen goed gaan. Door deze activiteiten hoop ik meer mensen, vooral ook veel nieuwe eerstejaars, over hun energiebarrière te halen, zodat ze naar de F.O.R.T. komen. Als de F.O.R.T. dan eenmaal gevuld is met de juiste ingrediënten — een stel Japieleden en (Brand) bier — dan weet ik zeker dat onze tijd en moeite zullen zorgen voor een bruisende F.O.R.T. en bovendien een heel gezellig jaar.

Door: de F.O.R.T.-kandi’s Middels enkele scheikundige begrippen stellen de kandidaten voor de F.O.R.T.commissie zich graag voor aan de vereniging.

Ik, Esther, zou volgend jaar graag de taak van penningmeester op me willen nemen en wil me graag voorstellen aan de hand van één van de mooiste scheikundige reacties die er bestaat; de synthese van een ester. Een ester wordt namelijk gemaakt uit een alcohol en een zuur.

Deze twee ingrediënten zouden in een perfecte verhouding bij elkaar samengevoegd moeten worden om de perfecte ester te maken. Zelf ben ik absoluut nog geen perfecte ester en zal hier dus de komende tijd aan moeten werken. Hierbij zal ik gelukkig geholpen worden, doordat ik de komende tijd in een vrij zuur milieu terecht zal komen en ik daarbij vast en zeker ook de kans zal krijgen om de nodige alcoholische versnaperingen te nuttigen. Of ik hier een betere est(h)er van zal worden, moet natuurlijk nog blijken.

Studytrip to Tallinn

Studytrip to Tallinn

Studytrip Tallinn Tuesday the 14th of April, on what was to be the beginning of a warm sunny week in the Netherlands, a group of Japies gathered to travel to the cold capitol of Estonia, Tallinn.

As it turned out Estonia is not only cold but actually quite cool. Under the supervision of dr. Jan Philipp Hofmann we visited the technical university, an AkzoNobel coating plant, and we learned about the large shale oil deposits and their history in Estonia.

Of course we also spent some time to investigate the local culture.

uesday started with a bus drive to Düsseldorf Weeze airport, where we flew with Ryanair to Tallinn. Eventually, we arrived in the city center around 10:00 p.m., right on time for a quick visit to the Old Town, where we quickly found a laboratory themed bar. We couldn’t resist visiting and most of us returned here a couple of times during the rest of the week for drinks.

The second day of the trip we visited the Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) in the morning, which is the only technical university in Estonia. When we arrived we got a presentation about the university and the student council of chemical engineering. They organize a lot of activities similar to Japie and even organize an activity that is quite similar to the ONCS, but instead of competing against all chemistry students in the country, it’s an event for every university in Estonia. After the lab tour we had a joint lunch with a couple of students in the canteen of the university.

After the lunch we headed to AkzoNobel Baltics AS, where industrial wood coatings are made.

As the name says, this location delivers to the market of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, but they also make wood coatings for the Finnish and Ukrainian market, because of the similar weather

conditions and preference to make buildings out of wood. First we had a short presentation about how they started off as a Soviet Union state company and eventually became part of the AkzoNobel group. After this presentation we had an extensive plant tour, where we saw how the resins were made and mixed, in order to get the wanted properties, and we even got to see how workers packed all the cans of paint or coating. One of the nice details is that, due to cold and harsh weather conditions compared to the rest of Europe, they test every paint sample to the local environment.

After the tour we headed back to our hostel where lots of participants went to the local supermarket to get some drinks for that evening, because we would meet up with some students from the TUT. After dinner most of the participants headed to the TUT using local transportation. Eventually we got there and had a nice evening with the students from the TUT with some chatting, games and card tricks.

On Thursday we first had a tour in an

old abandoned prison, which was originally built as a fortress. In the time of the rule of the Soviet Union, it was a prison where conditions were very poor. This was due to the fact that prison cells designed for sixteen prisoners were cramped with up to forty prisoners. Over the years, Estonia has had different occupiers, which were all cruel and made living in this prison very harsh. Eventually this prison was closed in 2007 and the last prisoners were moved to other prisons across Estonia.

After the prison tour we went to an old Russian theater where we had lunch, with typical Russian dishes containing mostly potatoes. After the lunch we gathered in front of the hostel where we started our tour of the old (Medieval) town of Tallinn.

A funny detail of this tour was that the mayor of the city doesn’t really like the government. An example of that was that the government once decided that it would be forbidden to drink in public, but that each city could allocate places where drinking in public would be allowed. As the mayor of Tallinn didn’t agree with this law, he decided that the only allocated drinking areas in Tallinn would be on the street and grass in front of the president’s house and around the parliament. The allocated drinking areas were soon removed from that law, which made public drinking forbidden everywhere. That evening we had a shared dinner with the whole group at a restaurant called Põrgu and had a nice meal there.

On Friday we had to get up at 5:30 a.m. for a drive to the eastern part of Estonia (near the Russian border), where we would explore the world of shale oil. Luckily the two and a half hours in the bus provided a much needed time for additional rest. After this long drive we visited Enefit, an oil company which is state owned. The company uses shale oil to provide

over 90% of the country’s power and still produces enough to be able to export energy.

Shale oil has a long history in Estonia and in the beginning of the twentieth century it was already mined and used as a fuel source.

During Soviet times a large power plant was built and the mining was increased to an industrial level.

Nowadays these plants continue to run, but are currently joined by a modern installation that is even more efficient (an energy efficiency of more than 80% is achieved). We got a presentation about this process by a very enthusiastic employee, followed by a tour of the old and new plant.

After the tour we took a short drive to the lunch location, where we had a good meal to prepare us for the next part of the day: a visit to the Oil Shale Competence Center. As it turned out this wasn’t only a research institute, but also some sort of small college. They provided bachelor level education for a variety of engineering disciplines and one master’s level focusing on shale oil. They provide impartial information about shale oil to the people affected by the mining and to companies interested in the potential of oil shale. They have research labs where they test shale oil samples from around the world and provide services for a variety of companies. During the lab tour, the cleanliness of the lab and equipment surprised many of our students, who were used to labs which are a lot messier.

After the bus ride back to the hostel we were rested enough to enjoy our last night in town.

After meeting up in the same lab bar as the first night, most of us ended up in a small club with various live bands that each had their own appeal.

fortified city since its foundation and no fort is complete without some hidden tunnels. The tour started with recent history and went back in time during the tour. Most recently the tunnels were used by the homeless people of the city. They have only been removed ten years ago. During the 80’s, the tunnels were the meeting place for the punk youth to escape the oppressive Soviet regime and enjoy some music. During the Second World War the tunnels were used as bomb shelters and before that the tunnels were largely abandoned to the time where the fortifications were still used by the Swedish and Russian forces.

The rest of day was free time, which was used by some to visit some historical sites such as the “Raeapteek” (the oldest pharmacy in continuous use) or the onion-domed St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

Others thought it was too cold outside and quickly went inside for some last drinks.

Although our flight was delayed, the journey went faster than expected and we arrived back in Eindhoven on time to be greeted with the news of PSV’s championship victory. Sadly, many of us were too tired to join the celebrations in Eindhoven.

Een nieuw gezicht op de faculteit Sinds maart werkt professor Remco Tuinier bij ST als hoogleraar Fysische Chemie. Hij heeft levensmiddelentechnologie gestudeerd in Wageningen en is na een promotieonderzoek (waarvoor hij een internationale prijs won) en een postdoconderzoek bij een wetenschapsinstituut in Duitsland gaan werken. Daarna bracht hij tijd door in de industrie, werkend bij DSM en als deeltijd professor in Utrecht. Nu hij uiteindelijk in Eindhoven is beland als fulltime professor, wordt het tijd voor het T-Licht om onze nieuwste aanwinst middels een interview aan jullie voor te stellen.

Wat wilde u vroeger worden toen u klein was?

Ik wilde piloot worden tot mijn achttiende. In die tijd waren er slechts twee opleidingen: in Groningen en in Limburg. Dat waren opleidingen waarvoor duizenden inschrijvingen waren, en er uiteindelijk maar vijfentwintig per jaar aangenomen werden. Dat ging in meerdere ronden, en ik kwam nog best ver eigenlijk, maar uiteindelijk ben ik er niet doorgekomen. Ik heb daarna nog geprobeerd om militair piloot te worden, maar daar ben ik afgewezen op psychologische gronden. Ze zeiden dat ik geen militaire mindset had, en daar hebben ze ook wel gelijk in. Uiteindelijk ben ik dus levensmiddelentechnologie gaan studeren in Wageningen en zeker niet met tegenzin. De sfeer was daar altijd erg goed.

Vanaf wanneer kreeg u de ambitie om professor te worden? Of had u deze niet?

Ik had die zeker niet van tevoren. Ik kwam er tijdens mijn afstudeerproject wel achter dat ik het onderzoek erg leuk vond en ik wilde dan ook promoveren. Ik was eigenlijk van plan om daarna de industrie in te gaan, maar ik had toch meer aandacht voor de theorie. Ik ben dus mijn postdoc in Utrecht gaan doen.

Toen kreeg ik een aanbod om bij het Institut für Festkörperforschung samen met professor Dhont een hele nieuwe groep op te bouwen. Om wat meer te leren over toepassingen in de praktijk ben ik in 2008 toch bij DSM gaan werken en ik heb daar ook

veel geleerd. In die tijd werkte ik ook deeltijd in Utrecht als professor en ik ben ook blijven publiceren. Nu heb ik dus de gelegenheid gepakt om hier te werken. Bij DSM vroegen mensen me wel eens of ik een aanbod als professor zou accepteren, en ik zei dat ik daar zeker voor openstond. Er was hier zeker ook ruimte voor iemand met mijn achtergrond. Vakken als Thermodynamica worden hier niet eens door fysisch-chemische onderzoekers gegeven, dat verbaasde me wel. Ik hoop dat ik moeilijke vakken als Thermodynamica kan relateren aan de praktijk.

Wat voor type student was u, de ijverige student of het feestbeest?

Ik was erg ijverig, maar op het vwo was dat anders. Ik ben af en toe bijna niet overgegaan. Toen ik ging studeren besloot ik dat ik nu echt mijn best moest gaan doen. Ik had nooit hoge cijfers gehaald vóór de universiteit.

Hoge cijfers op de middelbare zijn dus niet altijd belangrijk.

Wat is het vreemdste dat u gedaan heeft tijdens uw studententijd?

gewonnen was echt een verrassing, ze belden me 's ochtends op dat ik die avond in Parijs bij de prijsuitreiking moest zijn, maar ik was natuurlijk wel erg blij.

U heeft veel onderzoek gedaan naar levensmiddelen en deeltjes in voedsel. Bent u hierdoor anders gaan kijken naar eten?

Ja, ik kijk er echt op een meer fysisch-chemische wijze naar, naar de bindingen en stabiliteit. Meestal is het toch mijn vrouw die kookt, maar we koken ook graag samen. Ik ben meer theoretisch ingesteld en ben een beetje onhandig. Ik kreeg vroeger op tegen practica. Studenten van tegenwoordig krijgen wel erg weinig practica. Misschien dat voor 5-ECTS-vakken één studiepunt aan praktijk gewijd moet worden?

We hadden haar wijsgemaakt dat er een cameraploeg van RTL 4 kwam om over een nieuwe ontdekking van de professor (een “super”schuim) te filmen. We zeiden dan steeds dat de cameraploeg “volgende week donderdag” kwam, wat natuurlijk op 1 april viel. De hele vakgroep inclusief de professor zat in het complot.

Op 1 april kwam ik helemaal in pak opdagen. De studente vond het allemaal maar overdreven, maar ze trapte er wel in. Ik kijk uit naar 1 aprilgrappen in Eindhoven, maar dit jaar was het erg rustig.

U heeft een International Food Ingredient Award gewonnen. Wat hield deze in?

Mijn proefschrift ging over polysacchariden, die onder andere een rol hebben in yoghurt. Mijn begeleider heeft hem ingestuurd voor de award, een jaarlijkse prijs voor onderzoek gerelateerd aan levensmiddelen. Dat ik hem had

Komt de TU/e tot nu toe tegemoet aan uw verwachtingen?

Ja, ik heb erg prettige collega's bij ST en in de niewe onderzoeksgroep Fysische Chemie. Ik heb dagelijks wel drie kennismakingen, ook bij werktuigbouwkunde en natuurkunde; als fysisch-chemicus is dat ook belangrijk. Ik heb hier in Eindhoven nog geen onderwijs gegeven. Wel in Duitsland, overigens, ik heb Thermodynamica in het Duits gegeven. Gelukkig is het boek van Atkins ook in het Duits vertaald, dat maakte het voor mij veel makkelijker.

Wat is het grootste verschil tussen de Eindhovense en de Utrechtse student?

Ik ken de Eindhovense studenten nog niet heel goed, maar ik weet wel dat de Utrechtse student graag in discussie gaat en veel vragen stelt. Misschien zijn ze meer wetenschappelijk en minder praktisch ingesteld dan de Eindhovense studenten. Toen ik thermodynamica gaf in Utrecht, legde ik ooit aan eerstejaarsstudenten de wet van behoud van energie uit. Eén van de studenten vroeg toen: “Waar komt energie überhaupt vandaan?”. Het was wel erg leuk, je ziet iedereen kijken: ‘Wat gaat hij nu zeggen?’ Het was een iets te filosofische vraag, ik denk dat ingenieurs zoiets misschien niet vragen, omdat het minder praktisch is. Ik hoop natuurlijk nog uit te vinden of dit echt waar is. Ik kijk er erg naar uit.

Waar bent u het meest trots op?

Toch wel op het boek over depletieinteractie dat ik geschreven heb. We leven in een tijd van rendementsdenken, van getallen, en als wetenschapper is het voor je carrière veel beter om artikelen te schrijven. Vooral reviews, daar krijg je erg veel citaties voor. Maar een boek over dit onderwerp bestond nog niet.

We hebben echt gevochten met de uitgever om een lage prijs te krijgen, we hebben het boek van 100 euro naar 45 euro gekregen zodat AIO’s en studenten het kunnen kopen.

Heeft u hobby's buiten scheikunde?

Natuurkunde natuurlijk! Maar buiten dat ben ik ook geïnteresseerd in symfonische rockmuziek, politiek, theater... Ik ben erg groot fan van

Jeroen van Merwijk. Mijn interesses zijn erg breed.

Wat is uw grootste scheikundenachtmerrie?

Een grote brand, denk ik, zeker nu ik er (mede)verantwoordelijk voor ben.

Veiligheid is iets dat ik erg belangrijk vind en ik ben zelf wat onhandig, dus ja, brand of een explosie op het lab is mijn grootste nachtmerrie.

In uw thesis heeft u een opvallende stelling: “Zolang er veel mensen zijn die geloven in paranormale verschijnselen is het van belang dat er wetenschappers zijn die paranormale pretenties onderzoeken op hun juistheid."[1] Hoe verdedigt u die stelling?

Rond die tijd was er een genezend medium, Jomanda, een dame uit Tiel waarvan men beweerde dat ze water kon instralen met een genezende werking. Ze is later ontmaskerd, maar er waren dus ook echt zieke mensen die naar Jomanda gingen in plaats van naar de dokter. Wetenschappers hebben vaak de neiging om over dat soort dingen hun schouders op te halen, alsof wij academici in onze ivoren toren ons niet hoeven te bemoeien met wat de maatschappij denkt. Maar ik vind dat wij als wetenschappers de taak hebben om de maatschappij te informeren en dat soort paranormale verhalen op een kritische wetenschappelijke manier te bekijken.

Wat is uw beste en slechtste eigenschap?

Mijn beste eigenschap is denk ik toch wel dat ik goed ben met verbindingen, tussen mensen, maar ook tussen vakgebieden. Ik vind dan ook dat experimenten, theorie, en simulaties alle drie erg belangrijk zijn in een onderzoek.

Een slechte eigenschap van me is dat ik vaak te veel initiatief neem. Soms doe ik daardoor meer tegelijk dan verstandig is.

Mobielloze woensdagen!

Sinds de komst van de smartphone hebben we blijkbaar met zijn allen een ontzettende drang naar informatie. Het merendeel van deze informatie gaat volgens onderzoek nergens over, denk aan nieuws met betrekking tot bekende Nederlanders en het volgen van Facebook en Twitter.

D

eze constante informatiestroom en bijbehorende digitale rusteloosheid heeft ervoor gezorgd dat een goede vriend van mij, in het dagelijks leven visboer, een fikse burn-out kreeg. Hij werd daarom door zijn vrouw gedwongen om zijn mobiel in de Dommel te mikken.

EUROPE 2014 CERTIFIED EXCELLENCE IN EMPLOYEE CONDITIONS

De visboer ging nadenkenken over hoe je bewuster met je mobiel om kunt gaan. Hij nam weer een abonnement op een dagblad en las voor het slapen gaan het overige nieuws op Teletekst. Verder nam hij een prepaid mobiel waarmee je alleen maar kon bellen. Ditzelfde ritueel had hij ook de eerste dertig jaar van zijn leven gevolgd en warempel: het ging vrij snel stukken beter met hem.

Hier op de faculteit is de situatie wat betreft de mobiele telefoon niet veel beter. Studenten en medewerkers zijn vergroeid met hun smartphone.

Tijdens het wachten in kantine en lift is het gebruikelijk dat ze naar hun mobieltje staren. Snel even de

mail checken en kijken met wie Roy Donders vannacht weer is vreemd gegaan. Enige tijd geleden is de BHV opgetrommeld om een student te helpen met een paniekaanval. Bij de evaluatie van deze gebeurtenis bleek dat de paniekaanval veroorzaakt was

door het niet direct ter beschikking hebben van een telefoon. Mensen rekenen er tegenwoordig op dat je dag en nacht bereikbaar bent.

Als je een WhatsAppberichtje niet beantwoordt terwijl je online bent, heb je een probleem.

Nu heb ik het geniale voorstel om binnen de faculteit te komen tot een ‘rustdag van het mobieltje’. Als we op slechts één dag van de week ons mobieltje niet gebruiken, kunnen we er achter komen of we ons beter gaan voelen en of we daadwerkelijk meer rust in ons hoofd krijgen. Ik stel daarom voor dat, vanaf 1 juli 2015, iedere woensdag naast gehaktdag, ook mobielloze dag wordt.

ONCS nabeschouwing

Japie blijkt the fittest

zatte maar vooral vermoeide bende weer naar het SSC terugkeerde.

Toen PSV op zondag 19 april de schaal in Eindhoven veroverde, bedacht ik me de eeuwenoude wijsheid ‘Wanneer PSV kampioen wordt, wint Japie de ONCS!’ en het bleek maar weer eens waar. Al sinds 10 juni 2013 zijn wij als de een van de leukste commissies van Japie in de weer geweest om een onvergetelijke ONCS neer te zetten, maar of het is gelukt kan ik beter aan de lezer vragen. Was Hemelvaart 2015 weer een waas van wat sport, een heleboel gezellige mensen en veel bier? Voor de arme stakker die het evenement van het jaar gemist heeft of voor degene voor wie de ONCS vanwege een imposante hoeveelheid pils toch enigszins vergetelijk is gebleken, deel ik namens de ONCS-commissie 2015 onze terugblik op drie hartstikke mooie en zegevierende dagen.

Op woensdag begon het, zoals de traditie betaamt, met een borrel in de F.O.R.T. waar de sfeer er goed in zat. Het frietkot draaide overuren en laten we maar niet beginnen over de hoeveelheid goudgeel gerstenat dat uit de tap kwam. Aangezien dit jaar de ONCS in ons mooie Eindhoven plaatsvond, werden de kandi’s van de F.O.R.T.-cie het slepen met een fust bespaard, maar moesten we ook de treincantus missen. Dit jaar geen ingenieursambacht met een fietspomp, knorrende conducteurs en heel veel verbaasde gezichten van reizigers in de spits. Gelukkig mogen we dit volgend jaar weer meemaken op weg naar Amsterdam.

Na de laatste ronde in de F.O.R.T. werd er in een grote, jolige en vrolijke parade de verre tocht naar de sociëteit van Demos afgelegd om te beginnen met de woensdagborrel. Japie eigen was het vanaf het begin een gezellige borrel en de verenigingen die één voor één binnen kwamen werden dan ook warm verwelkomd. Om half elf ‘s avonds gaf de voorzitter een korte maar krachtige speech en zette

met een ad commune de toon voor de dagen die in het vooruitschot lagen. Tijdens de borrel was het een gezellige bende en de drukte nam toe. Het feest werd nog doorgezet tot in de vroege uurtjes.

Donderdagochtend mochten de vrijwilligers samen met enkele commissieleden in apen- en bananenpakken de deelnemers wakker maken met snoepbanaantjes en een leuke remix van junglemuziek.

Met lange gezichten pakten de deelnemers hun boeltje en was het tijd voor ontbijt. De kratten waren, dankzij het binnengehaalde geld, gevuld met goed brood en extra lekkere goodies zoals multivitamine en sultana’s. Dit viel goed in de smaak bij de deelnemers en verandering van spijs deed zeker eten. Om tien uur was het tijd voor de eerste rondes van de sporten, waar het toch wel om draait bij de ONCS. Hoewel Japies koning zijn in pilsen, bleek gelukkig ook dat Japies brak wedstrijden kunnen winnen.

Tijdens de lunch, waarvoor alle deelnemers zich hadden verzameld op het veld tegenover het Studentensportcentrum, vonden de eerste twee onderdelen van de speciale activiteit (SA) plaats. De hele ONCS draaide om ‘Survival of the Fittest’ en dit kwam duidelijk terug. De SA draaide om de vier basisbehoeften: eten, drinken, voortplanting en veiligheid. Eerst werd aan elke vereniging gevraagd om een deelnemer die wel worst zou lusten te leveren voor een zinderende eetwedstrijd waar Alembic, met een record van zeven en een half broodjes worst in tien minuten, het eerste onderdeel won. Vervolgens leverde elke vereniging vijf hitsige koppels die zo snel mogelijk in verschillende standjes ballonnen kapot moesten ‘prikken’ waarbij de vurige dames en heren van CDL lieten zien dat daar waarschijnlijk de meeste SOA’s in het rond gaan. Het entertainment viel bij alle deelnemers erg goed in de smaak. Na de lunch werd er weer een tweede ronde van sporten gedaan en werden de plaatsen in de poules voor vrijdag vastgesteld, met gelukkig heel veel teams van Japie in de winnaarspoules.

Na een verfrissende douche of, veel waarschijnlijker, een verfrissend pilsje gingen de deelnemers op weg naar de IJzeren Man, waar het avondeten, het derde onderdeel en eigenlijk de finale van SA zouden plaatsvinden.

Helaas zonder een zonnetje maar met een aangename temperatuur zaten deelnemers te chillen in het gras met een biertje en een bordje barbecue.

Naderhand was er nog yoghurt als toetje en waren de magen weer goed gevuld. Het avondeten was opgedeeld in twee groepen en terwijl de ene groep tijd had om te eten, moest de andere groep het laatste onderdeel van de SA voltooien om het laatste bonuspunt voor de finale van de SA binnen te halen. Per vereniging moesten twee deelneemsters over een stormbaan rennen om zo snel mogelijk uit het water een kannetje te halen en deze weer gevuld terug te krijgen bij het beginpunt. Helaas verliep dit

onderdeel minder soepel en verviel dit onderdeel bij de finale.

Vanwege de regen die alleen tijdens het tweede deel van de barbecue en het begin van de eigenlijke finale van de SA uit de hemel kwamen vallen, werd de finale van de SA verplaatst naar de lunch op vrijdag. Bij gebrek aan finale kon er echter meteen na de barbecue begonnen worden aan het feest en het belangrijkste onderdeel van de hele ONCS: de bierestafette.

Dit lukte Japie aardig aangezien Japie 1 en Japie 2 beiden met gemak de voorrondes doorkwamen.

Uiteindelijk hebben alle chemiecafés hun vruchten afgeworpen toen in beide halve finales een team van Japie zat. Japie 1 versloeg de CB met gemak en veroverde een plek in de finale. Echter ging het tijdens de tweede halve finale een beetje mis en begon Japie met een kleine achterstand tegen Alembic 1. Helaas verloor Japie 2 en moest het in de troostfinale ervoor zorgen dat de derde plek nog werd bemachtigd, wat gelukkig wel is gelukt.

Tijdens de finale moest Japie 1 het opnemen tegen Alembic 1 en helaas moesten we in hen onze meerdere erkennen. We zullen maar zeggen: ‘They might have won the battle, but have not won the war!’. Het feest ging nog door tot twee uur waarna een

Op vrijdagochtend verliep het allemaal wat rustiger en werden de brakke deelnemers verrast met een anti-katerontbijt van ei met spek, een maaltje dat met veel plezier werd weggewerkt. Het werd duidelijk dat vrijdag D-Day was met veel teams van Japie in finalepoules. Er werd nog gesport in de ochtend en tijdens de lunch werd de finale van de SA gespeeld. De verenigingen moesten over het veld verspreide levensmiddelen gaan verzamelen.

De kleine verenigingen gingen er met de punten vandoor, een welkome uitslag aangezien de grote concurrent Alembic anders wel heel dichtbij een overwinning zou komen. Om drie uur in de middag, toen het laatste wedstrijdbriefje door de wedstrijdcommissaris werd ingevoerd, rolde een winnaar uit de bus. Zoals we allemaal wel al hadden gehoopt was het niemand anders dan JAPIE! Met een mooie speech van onze voorzitter werd het Japielied nog maar een keer gebruld, voor zover dat nog lukte dan. De trofee is weer thuis.

Met heel veel plezier kijken wij terug op de drie dagen die we met heel veel liefde voor jullie hebben georganiseerd. Ik wil de deelnemers prijzen voor het plezier dat zij tijdens onze ONCS hebben getoond maar bovenal mijn commissiegenoten bedanken voor twee ontzettend toffe jaren. We hebben het overleefd!

Even schoppen

De grijze loper “De Groene Loper vormt het centrale, autovrije gebied waar alle gebouwen van de compacte universiteit aan grenzen. Het wordt een fraai ingericht gebied voor fietsers en voetgangers, met zitplekken, boomgroepen en een vijver.” Dit is de beschrijving van de TU/e over de Groene Loper. Het zogenaamd veelbelovende project wordt door de TU/e gebracht als een innovatieve toevoeging aan de campus, maar het zal mij nog maar benieuwen hoe groen hij uitpakt.

De mogelijkheden van aramide zijn eindeloos en dat maakt het zo bijzonder. Er is nog een wereld te ontdekken. En dat doen wij samen met onze klanten, want wij geloven dat de beste oplossingen co-creaties zijn. Dat doen we ook met studenten. Om de groei van ons bedrijf voort te kunnen zetten, zijn wij regelmatig op zoek naar stagiaires en nieuwe medewerkers op het gebied van chemie, chemische technologie, werktuigbouwkunde en technische natuurkunde.

et project bestaat uit een eerste en tweede fase en blijkbaar is de eerste fase het gebied van Vertigo naar Ceres, voornamelijk bestaande uit tegels en met uitzicht op fascinerend natuurlijke constructies als de Matrix en het Hoofdgebouw. Mocht ik als vis geboren zijn, dan had ik via Vestide instantaan de vijver als huisvesting gekozen want, man man man, wat een ecologisch verantwoorde locatie.

Ik ben echter geen vis en heb een geheugen van langer dan drie seconden (no hard feelings, goudvis), dus ik zal de aanleg van de tweede fase, van Ceres tot de Flux, niet gauw vergeten.

"Het enige groene wat ik kan spotten is een container..."

Toevallig moest ik in het derde kwartiel veel in Flux zijn, een gebouw met een mooi uiterlijk maar een wijs doch verstrooid innerlijk. Ik kwam echter altijd te laat bij mijn college, omdat er geen handige weg naar het gebouw liep. De mogelijkheden

waren omfietsen via de achterkant van het Metaforum of binnendoor via de loopbruggen wandelen, beiden niet ideaal. Ik kon de verbouwing voor Gemini daarentegen in eerste instantie waarderen. Mijn gedachte was namelijk, hier komt een mooie groene plek voor terug.

Na weken werk was het resultaat echter enkel een strook beton en de bijna met de grond gelijk gemaakte fietsenstalling bij Gemini. Oké, misschien komt er voor Flux nog een mooi stukje groen? Een tijd later kwam het antwoord op deze vraag: nee, gewoon nee.

Een enorme hoeveelheid beton en tegels is alles wat er voor het gebouw kwam te liggen. Zelfs de ongelukkige bomen die ooit in de fietsenstalling voor Gemini konden floreren, werden uit de grond getrokken. Het uitzicht vanuit Flux, waarvan ik had gehoopt dat het zitplekachtig, boomgroeprijk en vijverig zou zijn, fraai ingericht met overal tevreden fietsers en voetgangers, bleek niets van dit alles.

Ook het aangezicht van ‘blok beton’ Gemini draagt niet geheel bij aan het groene karakter dat ik had verwacht.

De natuurgetrouwe, overduidelijk niet bewerkte foto van het uitzicht vanuit de Flux zal dit beeld hoogstwaarschijnlijk bevestigen.

Bijzonder zwart-wit. Niet groen, maar grijs. Het enige groene wat ik kan spotten is een container , waarvan ik enigszins in twijfel trek of een boomgroep daarop zou kunnen aarden.

Op moment van schrijven is de bereikbaarheid gelukkig verbeterd.

Het niveau groen is echter nog steeds op een laag level. De afronding van de tweede fase van de Groene Loper ligt rond de zomer van 2015, wat behoorlijk dicht in de buurt ligt van de datum waarop deze editie van het T-Licht bij jou op de mat ligt. Ik ben bang dat de Groene Loper komende zomer nog helemaal niet af en dus ook niet groen zal zijn, hoewel dat de boodschap van dit artikel met de grond gelijk zou maken, mocht de deadline wel gehaald worden. Het zal mij benieuwen hoe groen de Groene Loper nou echt zal zijn, maar ik zie in ieder geval één lichtpuntje: die lamlendige 45 km/u golfkarretjes van de TU/e kunnen als automobiel echt niet door de beugel en die zullen we hopelijk dan ook niet terugzien op de autovrije Groene Loper.

Japiehuizen

Japiehuizen

Huize de Natte Stroopwafel Ex-huisgenoot gezocht!

Zoals in de vorige editie van het T-Licht, zal ook dit keer een Japie-huis zich voorstellen.

Uiteraard zijn er meer Japie-huizen in Eindhoven, de één nog leuker dan de ander, maar er kan er maar één het leukste zijn. Wij zijn Huize de Natte Stroopwafel, bekend om onze kingsavonden, de roodharige huisgenoot, de regenboogpasta’s en de gezellige huisdiertjes.

Geschiedenis Bijna vier jaar geleden is onze geschiedenis begonnen. Dit huis werd bewoond door verschillende mensen die nauwelijks tot geen contact met elkaar hadden, totdat Ilona van Reij kwam kijken naar een vrijkomende kamer. Haar enige concurrentie: een meisje dat om de hoek woonde.

Er volgden meer kijkavonden en steeds bleek dat Japies toch wel de gezelligste huisgenoten zijn. Op deze manier kwamen Jeroen Dobbelaar en Michelle Raven er ook bij. Per uitzondering werd er bij de volgende kijkavond een niet-Japie gekozen: Jelte was destijds een nuldejaars die Automotive zou gaan studeren, en achteraf bleek dat hij geen enkel feestje van Japie zou willen missen. Na een tijdje werd Michelle omgedoopt tot een Droge Stroopwafel en kwam er weer een kamer vrij. Hiervoor in de plaats kwam Bianca Ligt, die een mooie aanvulling bleek voor ons huis.

In de geschiedenis van ons huis is echter nog een groot mysterie dat ons allen ’s nachts wel eens wakker houdt. Uit mysterieuze tekens is gebleken dat er op Jeroens kamer vroeger een Japie heeft gewoond.

Deze persoon woonde er toen Japie nog een andere site had. Maar wie is deze persoon, waar is hij/zij beland en wat heeft hij/zij gedaan?

Tradities Geen gezellig huis zonder tradities. Wij zijn berucht om onze kingsavonden waarbij we met vijf tot tien man rond de tafel zitten.

Dit kan zowel plaatsvinden in de keuken als op ons heerlijk dakterras.

Er is regelmatig gebleken dat het niet verstandig is om dit vol te houden tot in de vroege uurtjes (zoals de avond voor de introductieweek).

Maar je moet maar zo denken: ken jij de mosselman? Onze Jelte komt uit Gouda, bekend om de kazen en stroopwafels en hij heeft onze huisdrank geïntroduceerd.

Dit drankje is namelijk een heerlijke natte siroopwafellikeur.

Deze wordt regelmatig genuttigd in aanwezigheid van nieuwe gasten.

Wij zijn het er met zijn allen over eens dat je verjaardag goed gevierd moet worden. Dit kan met een kingsavond of een siroopwafellikeurtje, maar een

lekker ontbijt vinden wij minstens zo belangrijk. Daarom wordt de jarige bij ons altijd gewekt door middel van onze mooie stemmen en kan de jarige een heerlijk ontbijtje verwachten.

Hierbij wordt er ook aan de nodige versiering gedacht (die vervolgens altijd blijft hangen tot de volgende verjaardag).

Paniek in Huis!

Ons huis heeft ook een tijd lang flink wat te verduren gehad. Zo hebben we last gehad van een zakkend plafond op de badkamer en een lekkend dak.

Gelukkig hebben wij een betrokken huisbaas die zo snel mogelijk met een oplossing komt, mits het dringend is. Zo heeft hij al eens een paar keer door een slaapkamerraam op

twee hoog van buiten naar binnen mogen kruipen omdat Michelle haar kamerdeur niet van het slot kreeg of de sleutel had gebroken. Nu is dit op zich geen schokkend verhaal, maar je moet je hierbij wel bedenken dat hij al meer dan 75 jaar oud is! Hij is niet bang voor verbouwingen, zo hebben wij een mooie keuken die voor de helft vernieuwd is. Hierdoor kunnen wij tegenwoordig genieten van een keuken met stevige, witte, spiksplinternieuwe, moeilijk te openen keukenkastjes onder het aanrecht en met gifgroene, vijftig jaar oude kastjes boven het aanrecht.

In ons huis heeft de huisbaas eigenlijk één ruimte voor zichzelf en dat is de garage. Hier is een mooie collectie van wc-potten, wasbakken, koelkasten, radiatoren en rollen vloerbedekking te vinden. Op die manier zou hij in theorie in no time een nieuwe wc-pot in ons huis kunnen installeren, mocht dat nodig zijn. Tot op heden is het ons echter gelukt beide wc’s in huis heel te houden, maar een reserve van tien wc-potten in de garage kan nooit kwaad. Ook dit studentenhuis heeft last gehad van muizen, twee muizen zijn een keer geadopteerd nadat het

toenmalig Japie-bestuur muizen cadeau had gekregen. Helaas hielden deze tamme muizen het in ons huis niet langer dan een maand vol.

Naast deze tamme muizen, hebben ook een aantal van hun wat minder gewenste vriendjes een bezoek gebracht aan ons huis. Deze muizen waren vooral op de kamers van Jelte en Bianca te vinden. Gelukkig heeft Bianca succesvol actie ondernomen tegen deze muizen. Op dit moment zijn daardoor de enige dieren die nog in ons huis voorkomen de rubberen badeendjes van Jeroen.

Hoewel de muizen al voor enige paniek zorgden, was de paniek groter toen de heg rond ons huis twee keer achter elkaar in brand was gestoken.

Gelukkig hadden onze oplettende buren verstand van brandjes en was ook de brandweer snel ter plaatse.

De avondmaaltijd De avondmaaltijden zijn bij ons erg belangrijk. Dit moment gebruiken wij vooral om bij te kletsen en als uitlaatklep tijdens tentamens. Wij doen vrijwel altijd gezamenlijk boodschappen. Meestal kiezen wij dan voor een pasta met een saus in de kleuren rood, groen, blauw, roze of wit. Mochten wij geen idee hebben wat we willen eten, dan hebben wij altijd nog een hele deur volhangen met receptenkaartjes. Uiteraard dient iedere maaltijd afgesloten te worden met toet. Er heeft dan ook nog nooit een avondmaaltijd zonder toet plaatsgevonden. In onze keuken staat geen tv, zodat we alle tijd hebben om gezellig bij te kletsen tijdens en na de maaltijd (aangezien zelden iemand zin heeft om te gaan afwassen). Wel is het belangrijk dat de muziek in de keuken aanstaat, zodat we altijd kunnen luisteren naar onze huiszender: Skyradio. Dit schalt dan ook regelmatig uit ons oude radiootje in de keuken.

Zoals te lezen is het dan dus ook meer dan goed vertoeven in Huize de Natte Stroopwafel. Mocht je nog niet overtuigd zijn, kom dan vooral een keer langs! En wanneer je informatie denkt te hebben over onze missende ex-huisgenoot, meld je dan vooral, zodat ook wij weer rustig kunnen slapen.

OSTS casetour

Technologen zijn veel beter On Wednesday the 11th of March and Thursday the 12th of March the OSTS Casetour took place. Not all of you will be familiar with the OSTS, so first an introduction. The OSTS stands for ‘Overleg Scheikundig Technologische Studieverenigingen’, which roughly translates to the meeting of the study associations of Chemical Engineering and the name is rather self-explanatory. The four study associations of Chemical Engineering, T.S.V. ‘Jan Pieter Minckelers’ from Eindhoven, het Technologisch Gezelschap from Delft, C.T.S.G. Alembic from Enschede and G.T.D. Bernoulli from Groningen meet and organize activities. The purpose of the OSTS is to bring together the members of these associations. This year’s activity was a two day excursion to Sitech on the Chemelot campus in Geleen and the job fair at the university of Leuven.

he poor students from Bernoulli had to get up very early to get from the far north to the south of the Netherlands. Fortunately they had a bus so they could get some shut-eye before the excursion. The students from Enschede and Delft could get on a train which took them to Eindhoven where the bus stood waiting so everyone could board.

The journey seemed to go smoothly, but alas, because of the thick fog a traffic jam appeared. The bus driver attempted to get us to the Chemelot site in time by avoiding the A2 highway and taking the scenic route.

With a slight delay we managed to arrive in Geleen. We were welcomed with coffee, tea and the typical ‘Limburgse vlaai’, much to the surprise of our northern colleague students. A couple of presentations were held, in which the role of Sitech on the Chemelot site was explained.

For decades the Chemelot site was manned by only one company, DSM, which is short for Dutch State Mines.

At first they mined coal, but once these resources were depleted they shifted their focus to the chemical industry. In 2002 the DSM shifted their focus again and sold their plants to SABIC. More companies started to take over the various plants. These plants are still dependent on each other, for example some outlets from one plants act as feeds for other plants. Besides this, there also has to be someone who takes care of the services for the site, such as the fire department, security and water cleaning services.

Sitech has two departments. One is the Manufacturing services, which focuses on helping the companies to run their installations as smoothly as possible by providing maintenance and operational support and sharing

their expertise as many of the Sitech employees used to work on the plants. The other department is Park services, which focusses on the dayto-day operation of the Chemelot campus. It provides water treatment, oversees the fire department and provides security services.

they also played their part in these presentations. It soon became clear that a lot of cooperation between these companies existed. After these presentations, we got a lunch and could talk to some of the employees about their experiences on the Chemelot campus. After this, we got a tour over the campus and explanations what Sitech did for the companies. We also visited the IAZI, the water purification installation, which was located a small distance from the site.

Once the tour was completed, we were separated in small groups and assigned a case study. Each case was coupled with one of the companies on the campus and the topics of these cases varied a lot. Despite the fact that these were very varying topics, they still depended on each other. This was in line with the message of the day: cooperation.

With this in mind, it will not come as a surprise that the deciding factor was the extent to which each team cooperated. After this case the day program was finished so we got on the bus and drove to Maastricht were we stayed in a StayOkay hotel.

Quickly everyone dropped their baggage and freshened up a bit.

In the evening we headed to the center of Maastricht to have dinner with the Sitech employees. This proved to be a very nice evening with excellent food and plenty of opportunities to talk to the employees about Sitech, Chemelot, and Chemical Engineering in general with plenty of anecdotes. Plenty of students were very interested in the experiences of the employees about working in Limburg with its strange language and traditions. This dinner was also a great moment to get to know the students from the other associations. It was very nice to get to know these students, as you seldom get to know them during your student time, but probably will end up working with some of them.

After everyone was full it was time to test the newly formed bonds of

friendship by exploring the nightlife of Maastricht. One particular event of note was the arrival of a carnival artist who kept singing one song for several hours . At the end of this song, everyone was ‘loco loco’.

The next morning we entered the bus once again and made our way to the University of Leuven. This long bus ride was an excellent opportunity to catch up to some sleep. Unfortunately the person who would tour us through the labs of the Chemical Engineering department called in sick. This wasn’t much of a problem as we were able to enter the job fair. This job fair is the equivalent of the Wervingsdagen Career Expo in Eindhoven. It was a very interesting and well-organized job fair. Each study had a goodie bag with their own color, which allowed recruiters to approach students they were interested in. There was also a very interesting live interview of several young employees from a wide range of companies, ranging from engineers in consultancy to engineers at the Belgium railroads.

It was a nice opportunity to talk to Belgium recruiters and we learned that despite the fact that Belgium and Netherlands are much the same,

there are still some small differences.

For many of the recruiters it came as a surprise that we were students from the Netherlands. However, after they recovered from their shock they were very interested in the concept of the OSTS. After a couple of hours everyone had enough opportunity to talk to the companies they deemed interesting and it was time to continue back to the Netherlands. We went through two very interesting days filled with much information and new insights. Not only was the program very interesting, the interaction with students from the other associations was a nice added value to this casetour. The focus of cooperation at Sitech was very befitting of this group of students from TG, Japie, Alembic and Bernoulli, united under the banner of Chemical Engineering and the OSTS. Op het mooie weer!

Nu de zomer weer in zicht komt en er al weer semi-buitenborrels worden gehouden, trekt ook heel Nederland richting de terrassen om te kunnen genieten van het mooie weer. De meeste mensen gaan lekker op het terras zitten met de pootjes omhoog, maar om deze zomerse ervaring compleet te maken kan een lekker fris biertje natuurlijk niet ontbreken.

Voor deze editie van het Bier van het Kwartaal zijn uw favoriete oud-voorraadbeheerders op zoek gegaan naar het ultieme terrasbiertje voor deze zomer.

e keuze voor dit terrasbier is uiteindelijk gevallen op de Sint Bernardus Wit, welke gebrouwen wordt door de Watou-brouwerij in het uiterste puntje van West-Vlaanderen. Deze brouwerij is gestart in 1946, toen Evarist Deconinck de kaasmakerij van Watou overnam van de Trappistenbroeders van de Abdij op de Katsberg. Door het contact met deze Trappistenmonniken kwam Deconinck al snel in aanraking met de broeders van de welbekende SintSixtusabdij van Westvleteren. Deze broeders hadden namelijk geen zin om hun bier te commercialiseren, waardoor Deconinck besloot om naast de kaasmakerij ook een brouwerij te beginnen. In samenwerking met de broeders van Westvleteren werden recepten van de bieren overgebracht naar Watou, waar het bier verder gebrouwen werd onder de naam Sint-Sixtus.

In 1959 werd het simultaan maken van bier en kaas toch wat veel om naast elkaar voort te kunnen zetten, wat ertoe leidde dat Deconinck de kaasmakerij verkocht en er alleen nog bier werd gebrouwen in Watou. Ondertussen brouwde de abdij van Westvleteren alleen nog maar kleine batches voor eigen gebruik. Een aantal jaar later kwam de schoonzoon van Deconinck ook meehelpen in de brouwerij, wat leidde tot een verlenging van de licentie van Westvleteren. Na ongeveer vijftig jaar werd er een nieuwe overeenkomst gesloten tussen de Trappistenbrouwerijen en kwam er een eind aan het Sint-Sixtus bier uit Watou. De

reden was dat er in deze nieuwe overeenkomst was besloten dat Authentic Trappist bieren enkel nog gebrouwen mochten worden binnen de muren van een klooster. Omdat de toenmalige brouwmeesters niet wilden stoppen met het brouwen van de zeer populaire bieren, werden er kleine veranderingen aangebracht in het recept en werden de bieren verkocht onder de naam St. Bernardus. Opmerkelijk is dat St. Bernardus wel verder brouwde met de originele gistvariant van Westvleteren, terwijl de brouwerij van Westvleteren tegenwoordig brouwt met een variant van de gist van Westmalle. De Watou-brouwerij kregen zij na de hervatting van de brouwwerkzaamheden binnen de abdij om zo tóch ‘originele’ Trappistengist te hebben.

Het meest bekende voorbeeld hiervan is natuurlijk de overheerlijke St. Bernardus Abt 12 (naar hetzelfde recept als de Westvleteren 12), welke ook in de F.O.R.T. te verkrijgen is. Ook de voormalige blonde en donkere varianten van Westvleteren werden doorgebrouwen (maar dan wel onder de namen St. Bernardus Pater 6 en St. Bernardus Prior 8). Deze drie bieren, maar voornamelijk de Abt 12, zijn internationaal zeer hoog aangeschreven. Zo is de Abt 12 al een aantal keren genomineerd als beste bier van de wereld. Na het beëindigen van de licentie van Westvleteren werd ook een nieuw bier toegevoegd aan het assortiment, namelijk de Tripel. In latere jaren zijn ook de Christmas Ale, de Extra 4 en het Witbier toegevoegd aan het assortiment. Tot op de dag van vandaag blijven de bieren van

St. Bernardus een goede vervanger van de veel minder goed verkrijgbare Westvleteren. Het is zelfs een aantal keer voorgekomen dat op een dubbelblinde test deze twee bieren verwisseld werden door liefhebbers en experts!

Naast de bieren van St. Bernardus zelf wordt er ook nog een tweetal andere bieren in de brouwerij gebrouwen, namelijk de Watou Tripel en het Grottenbier. Leuk feitje achter dit Grottenbier is dat dit bier oorspronkelijk rijpte in mergelgrotten vlakbij de Hoegaarden-brouwerij, maar dat dit rijpen verplaatst moest worden naar de grotten van Kanne, omdat er teveel vleermuizen overwinterden in de oorspronkelijke grotten.

Naast het brouwen van bier houdt men zich in Watou ook bezig met het verbouwen van hun eigen hop op een groot veld naast de brouwerij. Hierdoor brouwt men

bij St. Bernardus ook nog eens met eigen hop en mag de brouwerij daarom ook het kwaliteitskeurmerk ‘Belgische Hop’ voeren, omdat meer dan 50% van de gebruikte hop van Belgische afkomst is.

De St. Bernardus Wit, waar onze keus voor Bier van het Kwartaal uiteindelijk op gevallen is, is een biertje dat samen met de ‘godfather’ van het witbier, Pierre Celis, is gebrouwen. De naam van deze brouwer zegt sommigen van jullie misschien niet zo veel, maar het bier dat hij heeft ontwikkeld misschien wel. Hij is namelijk de brouwer achter het alom bekende Hoegaarden Wit en het iets minder bekende Celis White. Samen met de brouwmeesters van St. Bernardus ontwikkelde hij in 2003 een lekker fris biertje met veel koriander en citrusvruchten (klinkt bekend?). Het resultaat smaakt uitstekend en is wat fruitiger dan de Hoegaarden Wit. Het bier heeft een moutige smaak en een sterke nasmaak van sinaasappels.

De sinaasappels komen ook erg goed terug in de geur van het bier, die lang blijft hangen, wat absoluut geen straf is. Het is een ontzettend goed terrasbier, dat bijzonder goed wegdrinkt met zijn 5,5% alcohol.

Het enige minpuntje is nog wel de ontzettende hoeveelheid CO2 die het bier bevat, die eventueel een probleem kan gaan opleveren na

het consumeren van meerdere van deze rakkers. Het resultaat is een ontzettend lekker witbier om van te gaan genieten tijdens een lekkere buitenborrel!

Een noemenswaardige afvaller van de smaaktest is trouwens de Koekedam (ruiten dame), een lekkere frisse saison met een kruidige citrussmaak, die helaas moest afvallen vanwege het feit dat onze vaste leverancier hem niet kan leveren. Desalniettemin is ook dit een aanrader voor thuis of op het terras!

10 voor T-Licht

Cryptogramkampioenen "Ik ben chemicus, deed mijn master in de organische chemie, een vakgebied dat zich buigt over het maken van nieuwe moleculaire verbindingen. Daar heeft wat ik nu doe helemaal niets mee te maken. Ik had ook eerlijk gezegd niet aan ASML gedacht als potentiële werkgever. Ik wist dat ze iets deden met computerchips en lithografie maar daar hield het wel een beetje op. Toch zit ik hier helemaal op mijn plaats." Aan het woord is Hella Logtenberg, Optics Lifetime Analyst bij ASML.

et team van Hella werkt aan de levensduur van de spiegels in ASML’s nieuwste Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) lithografiemachines.

Met het licht wordt het patroon op de wafer geprojecteerd. Om het licht te kunnen concentreren en ‘lijnen’ te kunnen schrijven tot slechts 20 nanometer worden de lichtgolven via een aantal spiegels geleid. Hella: "Wij houden ons bezig met het voorkomen van vervuiling (contaminatie) en vervorming van de spiegels tijdens het productieproces van computerchips. Immers de minste afwijkingen veroorzaken een tegenvallend resultaat op de chip. De spiegels bevinden zich in een vacuüm. Het is echter bijzonder moeilijk om een vacuüm helemaal schoon te krijgen. Het minste beetje moleculen zal op de oppervlakten blijven plakken, energie absorberen en vervallen tot koolstof. Dat

absorbeert licht en geeft ruis en dat willen we natuurlijk niet. Een andere uitdaging is dat de hoogwaardig gepolijste toplaag van de spiegel niet van structuur mag veranderen terwijl het blootstaat aan thermische en chemische invloeden."

De machines van ASML zijn bijzonder complex en bestaan uit vele modules en submodules die in een nauw samenspel een absolute topprestatie neerzetten. Om dat allemaal te begrijpen en je eigen werk goed te kunnen inrichten vereist enige ‘opstarttijd’. Hella: “Gelukkig hebben we bij ASML een goed onboardingprogramma. Je krijgt daarin algemene uitleg en gaat vervolgens vanuit je afdeling kijken naar alle verschillende groepen. Zo leer je stap voor stap hoe het product in elkaar zit. Daarnaast is er veel aandacht voor de manier van werken. ASML heeft een duidelijke

eigen methode van een probleem snel opsplitsen in kleine modules waaraan allerlei mensen en teams vervolgens gelijktijdig gaan werken.

Ik vind de aanpak van ASML fijn. Het is de enige manier om de snelheid erin te houden en maakt dat je nauw samenwerkt met allerlei disciplines. "

Hella Logtenberg: "ASML zoekt op waarvan de rest zegt: je bent gek!"

"Ons team is zeker geen eilandje binnen ASML. Zo werken we intern met diverse chemici, de groep Vacuum Systems en met afdeling Research dat zich onder andere bezighoudt met het begrijpen van plasma-gerelateerde processen.

Daarnaast werken we nauw samen met externe partijen voor onderzoek en chemische analyses. Samen gebruiken we een testmachine hier in Veldhoven waar we samples kunnen draaien en analyseren. Dat vullen we aan met een stuk data-analyse uit informatie van diverse sensoren in de machine. Zo ontstaat een steeds beter beeld van de optimale werkmethodiek voor de machine.

Want terwijl de eerste EUV-machines al operationeel zijn, zijn we ook nog volop aan het leren."

"Waar ik in de toekomst uit wil komen weet ik nog niet. De techniek trekt me en daar kun je volop in groeien bij ASML. De uitdagingen schuiven steeds op."

Woensdagavond 18 maart was het eindelijk tijd om onze taalkennis op de proef stellen tijdens de 10 voor T-Licht activiteit die in de F.O.R.T. plaatsvond. In deze quiz, die bestond uit vijf verschillende taalrondes, gooiden de zes deelnemende teams al hun creativiteit, taalkennis en gokvermogen in de strijd om de felbegeerde overwinning te behalen. Dit alles gebeurde natuurlijk onder het toeziend oog van een strenge jury die bestond uit enkele redactieleden van het T-Licht.

adat iedereen zijn teamgenoten gevonden had was het tijd voor de eerste ronde: ‘Met andere woorden’.

Gedurende deze ronde moesten we de betekenis raden van nogal onalledaagse woorden, zoals labberlottig, wat lamlendig bleek te betekenen. Verder kwamen we er onder andere nog achter dat als je efelides hebt, dit niet wil zeggen dat je op een elf lijkt, maar dat je wat zomersproeten hebt.

Vervolgens gingen we snel door met de tweede ronde, genaamd ‘Cryptokronkels’. Er werd steeds een cryptische, soms wat lugubere omschrijving van een woord gegeven, zoals: Een hoop baby’s in zee. Natuurlijk wisten alle teams meteen, zij het soms met wat hulp van andere, nogal luidruchtige teams, dat dit de omschrijving van een geboortegolf moest zijn. Na deze ronde werd de tussenstand bekend gemaakt, waarin team drie de leiding nam.

Nadat we even tijd kregen om bij te komen van alle exotische woorden die ons om de oren vlogen, was het alweer tijd voor de derde ronde: ‘Zoek de fout’. In deze ronde was het de bedoeling dat de teams steeds een spel- of stijlfout uit een zin haalden.

Probleem was alleen dat deze zinnen steeds volstonden met woorden die vrij weinig gebruikt worden en er daardoor allemaal even verdacht uitzagen. Team drie wist deze ronde echter zonder al te veel puntverlies te doorstaan, waarmee ze hun koppositie wisten te behouden.

Na de bekendmaking van de tussenstand was het tijd voor het ‘Woordritsen’. In deze ronde werden er steeds twee woorden gegeven en werd gevraagd naar het woord dat daar tussenin past. Een voorbeeld was ‘vossen … ster’, wat natuurlijk compleet gemaakt kan worden met hol, zodat vossenhol en holster verkregen werd.

Vervolgens kwamen we alweer aan bij de laatste ronde, namelijk ‘Spelling’. Deze ronde bleek nog verrassend moeilijk te zijn, hoewel we alleen maar hoefden te zeggen of de gegeven woorden goed of fout gespeld waren. Gelukkig leerde een korte blik op de andere teams dat ook zij geen flauw idee hadden welke woorden nu goed of fout waren en dat we ons dus niet al te veel zorgen hoefden te maken over onze positie in het klassement.

Na een spannende laatste ronde werd de einduitslag opgemaakt, en bleek dat team drie helaas wat

punten had laten liggen, waardoor het klassement op zijn kop stond.

De F.O.R.T-cie had een dappere poging gedaan maar werd helaas laatste. Team vier en vijf veroverden uiteindelijk respectievelijk de vijfde en de vierde plek. In de top drie van het klassement was het erg spannend, uiteindelijk werd team drie derde, team een veroverde de tweede plaats en team twee won de activiteit! Alle deelnemers ontvingen nog een certificaat van afronding en een briefopener met het logo van 10 voor T-Licht. De winnaars kregen hier bovenop nog een welverdiende prijs.

Helaas was hiermee alweer een einde gekomen aan 10 voor T-Licht, wat een erg geslaagde activiteit bleek te zijn. Dit redactielid zal in ieder geval ook niet snel meer vergeten hoe je broccoli schrijft, namelijk met twee c’s en één l.

In this edition a handful of these are high lightened to see how the world could benefit from the new knowledge as the world keeps revolting around its axis. Do not worry, we will not bother you with the story of the black and blue dress (or was it white and gold?).

In this edition we look for the connection between drinking and having a smoke, use of nanoparticles to recover uranium, evolution of properties of marihuana in USA, and how selfish it actually is to say “I” and “me” in context. The last subject that will be discussed is the possible failure in the statistical important p-value.

Nicotine exposure increases desire for alcohol Some of you may know this phenomenon. When you invite people for a drink who are smoking daily, after a glass or two they would like to go outside for a smoke to come back and enjoy drinking till the pub is closed. This action-reaction can be explained by the fact that nerve cells implicate the coexistence of drinking and smoking dependence. This is the conclusion by experiments on rats.

Rats dependent on nicotine escalate their drinking more quickly than rats that haven’t been exposed to nicotine. After nicotine injections, rats that had previously been exposed to alcohol dosed themselves with more alcohol than rats unexposed to nicotine did. To decouple the alcoholnicotine presence to the activity of alcohol and nicotine a prohibitor for nicotine is injected in which the cells ignore nicotine. These rats injected with the inhibitor did not boost their

intake of alcohol. This double effect of nicotine and alcohol dependence may be due to a select group of nerve cells that respond to this nicotineaided drinking.

Uranium recovery by iron nanoparticles Uranium is known as an important element for energy generation and medical purposes. However, another important aspect of uranium use is the environmental control of (decay) products and waste streams which could contain uranium. It is difficult to recover uranium-ions in waste streams such that this pollutant does not reach the open environment.

One of the used technics is the use of ion-extraction which is quite expensive in terms of ionic solvent expenditures. A new technology involves the use of iron nanoparticles to capture and enclose the uraniumions. In liquid, iron nanoparticles lure and encase uranium, which can then reeled in using the magnetic

property of iron. These nanoparticles have a core of pure iron and a shell of iron hydroxide. The negative charges in the shell attract positive charges in a water-soluble form of uranium, in this case uranyl nitrate. Once baited by a nanoparticle’s outer shell, the uranium gets transported into the sphere. There, the iron shackles uranium with extra electrons, locking it into the globe’s nanostructure.

Environmental engineers Lan Ling and Wei-xian Zhang of Tongji estimate that per gram of iron 2.4 grams of uranium can be collected. This new recovery method can not only be implemented at nuclear disasters such as Fukushima but it can also be

more mind-bending herb. This means that the increase of THC by genetic modification has the effect of reducing the potential of producing CBD.

used for the collection of uranium for fuel rods. This is theoretical possible as uranium that is naturally present in seawater. If all uranium in oceans would be collected, about 4.5 billion metric tons of uranium could be harvested. However, the uranium is present at very low concentrations.

Today’s weed less medicinal, more psychoactive As a lot of foreigners, especially those that have never visited The Netherlands, think our national products are windmills, wooden shoes and weed. That last item on this list is interesting for both its medicinal and hallucinating properties. As with most biological products, improving the strain is important to resist the effects from insects, improve durability or increase the biochemical compound production within the plant. This new improvement of strains can be clearly seen in the USA. Due to new laws in some of the states in the USA marijuana is now not only available by doctor recipe but fully legalized. But in the search for a stronger high, marijuana breeders may have inadvertently ditched its healing properties. The marijuana now legally sold in Colorado contains around three times as much tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive component of pot, as did plants grown thirty years ago. But current varieties also have little to no cannabidiol, or CBD, the component thought to have therapeutic potential.

Speaking in I and me is not connected to narcissism We all know people who are always speaking in the first “important” person, like “I know that…” or “Me and the rest…”.

Those are a few of the sentences which people think are typical for people with narcissism. We agonize them for thinking and especially expressing themselves in that way to communicate. However studies have shown people with narcissism do not utters more words like “I” or “me” than people who don’t score high on narcissism questionnaires.

Narcissism scores of over 4800 USA and German volunteers, mostly college students, were compared with their speech patterns on oral and written communication tasks.

Participants with an elevated sense of superiority and self-importance showed no special affinity for I-talk, contrary to popular opinion. Another possibility, the researchers suggest, is that narcissists frequently use ‘absolutely’,’ every’, and other words signaling total certainty in what they’re saying. So for the record, to express your concern it’s not selfish to speak in I. But that is just what I think about this subject.

P-value, the chance of predicting even this passage wrong.

Although this part is as controversial as the relativity theory by Einstein was in its days, there is a probability that the way statistical analysis is defined could be different from today onwards. Perhaps you’re among the lucky first year students who do not yet know what a p-value is. In short, p-values are supposed to help scientists decide whether an experimental result is apparently meaningful or really

lucky circumstances. So p-values supposedly tell you whether the difference you saw was luck or reality. This is done by computing a null hypothesis, low p-values should indicate that the null hypothesis is false. A clear basis for reflecting data, right? However, last month a scientific journal — Basic and Applied Social Psychology — announced that it won’t publish papers that mention p-values. The reason: “P-value calculations tell you only the probability of seeing a result at least as big as what you saw if and only if there is no real effect.“. Meaning that a low p-value can result from two options: either the null hypothesis is wrong or you just obtained some unusual data. However, you could not distinguish these two possibilities from each other. If there is a real effect, your calculation of a p-value is rendered meaningless, because that calculation assumed that there wasn’t a real effect.

On the supporting site to maintain the p-value analysis they say: “The [pvalue] fails to provide the probability of the null hypothesis, which is needed to provide a strong case for rejecting it”. Meaning that there must be an argument to reject the null hypothesis rather than support the fact that the null hypothesis is wrong or unusual data is present. The pros and cons are discussed at high level.

One thing is for sure, the outcome will have a probability of 1.0 on the interpretation of statistical analysis.

Iedereen kent het wel, de studenten-koelkast. Hoe stereotype het ook mag zijn, er zijn er flink wat variaties te vinden wat betreft inhoud en er zijn dus ook verschillende soorten studenten te onderscheiden. Daarnaast zegt de inhoud en ordening van de koelkast veel over iemands levensstijl en andere dagelijkse bezigheden. Wij, de kandidaten voor het 58ste bestuur van Japie, openen graag onze deuren, zodat jullie ons alvast een beetje beter kunnen leren kennen.

Camiel Steffanie: Voorzitter Ik ben van origine Limburgs, dus het potje stroop ontbreekt natuurlijk niet, aangezien ik dit al van kleins af aan gebruik om mijn boterham kaas of salami te upgraden. Ik houd van afwisseling, vandaar dat ik standaard verschillende soorten hartig beleg, zoals ham, kaas en salami in huis heb.

Daarnaast zijn dit ook de ingrediënten voor het studentenontbijt bij uitstek, de tosti.

In Huize Hornystreet woon ik samen met andere actieve Japies, waar inmiddels al een flinke Japiehistorie is opgebouwd. Daarom staat er standaard een assortimentje aan speciaalbier koud. Als er geen activiteiten of feestjes zijn, snijden we graag een kaasje aan onder het genot van een biertje. Achel Blond symboliseert hier mijn tijd als EJC en XX Bitter als ONCS commissie. Tot slot, natuurlijk een fles ranja en in het kastje boven mijn koelkast staat altijd wat zoet beleg. Dit zijn de redders in nood, welke benut worden als de koelkast onverhoopt leeg is.

Mijn koelkast is dus een strategisch uitgewerkt geheel. Ik hoop dat ik als voorzitter dan ook goed het overzicht kan houden en de capaciteiten van de andere vier koelkasten effectief kan coördineren.

Alex van de Greef: Secretaris Op het moment dat mij gevraagd wordt om mezelf voor te stellen aan de hand van mijn koelkast, geef ik antwoord met de vraag; welke van de twee koelkasten? Waar de ene koelkast namelijk veilig in mijn eigen domein staat, is er ook een gedeelde koelkast voor het huis. De inhoud van deze twee verschilt echter als dag en nacht.

Als toekomstige secretaris streef ik ernaar om het contact met leden en andere verenigingen goed te onderhouden en waar mogelijk een open deur te hebben voor iedereen die binnen wil vallen. Dus net als een open bar in huis, een open deur voor leden.

Sjoerd van Deinse: Pennnigmeester Mijzelf voorstellen aan de hand van mijn koelkast bleek lastig. Ik heb namelijk geen koelkast, omdat ik nog thuis woon. Overigens ben ik van plan om hier verandering in te brengen, dus zal ik vertellen over mijn koelkast-toekomstvisie.

Mijn eigen koelkast staat vaak vol met wat te drinken en een ontbijt voor een goede start na een gezellig avondje met vrienden en studiegenoten. Ook zorg ik ervoor dat er vaak sportdranken aanwezig zijn om te compenseren voor mijn actieve avonden en ochtenden. De

Als penningmeester van het kandidaatsbestuur vind ik dat geld uitgegeven mag worden als daar een goede reden voor is. Eten is bijna heilig in de Indische cultuur waarin ik ben opgegroeid: het moet goed smaken en er mag wat meer aan worden besteed. Dat gezegd hebbende, zullen er geen te goedkope huismerken in mijn koelkast te vinden zijn.

Daarnaast is iets om te drinken altijd op zijn plaats, al dan niet alcoholisch. Restjes van de dag ervoor worden ook bewaard, want eten weggooien is verspilling.

Dat is tenminste mijn streven, maar mezelf kennende zal de orde in werkelijkheid ver te zoeken zijn.

Troy Oude Bekke: Coördinator onderwijs Als je naar mijn koelkast kijkt, valt het op dat er niet veel instaat. En dit leidt vaak tot grote ergernis bij mijn vriendin. Als ze bij mij is wil ze graag van alles snacken, terwijl ik niks in huis heb. En zoals de meeste mensen wel weten, hongerige vrouwen kunnen nogal zeuren. Dat mijn koelkast zo leeg is, zou natuurlijk te maken te kunnen hebben met het feit dat ik meer eten en vooral drinken in mijn tweede huis heb

Mark van Dijk: Coördinator externe betrekkingen Naast de mooie koelkasten in de F.O.R.T. en een gedeelde koelkast met mijn huisgenoten, staat er op mijn kamer nog een kleine koelkast.

Dit is daardoor enige koelkast die ik dus echt mijn eigendom mag noemen. Ik vind het zelf ook het leukste om de koelkasten te delen, want door het vele delen maak je namelijk veel samen mee. Na een hecht jaar als F.O.R.T.-commissie, is een bestuursjaar dan een logische opvolging.

Ik kom uit Limburg, waar een lekker Brand-biertje bij het eten heel normaal is, dus je kunt wel begrijpen waar mijn affiniteit voor bier vandaan komt. Ik was ook voordat ik F.O.R.T.cie werd nog best sportief, waardoor mij het leuk leek om de ONCS van 2015 in Eindhoven te organiseren.

Als coördinator onderwijs zal ik veel bezig zijn met overleggen dus ik denk dat ik veel lunchpakketten moet gaan maken om goed voorbereid te kunnen zijn.

Omdat op het tijdstip van schrijven ik tijdelijk ben teruggetrokken in de veilige haven van mijn ouders is de koelkast op mijn kamer naast klein, ook erg minimalistisch geworden.

Met slechts een fles Erdinger en een pak ijsthee houd ik het normaal namelijk niet lang vol. De bidon, die gevuld is met Jägermeister, wacht nog op een moment om mee op pad te gaan. Ideeën hiervoor zijn altijd welkom.

Na de verwachte terugkeer in Eindhoven zal ik de koelkast, net als mijn studentenleven weer invulling geven. Als kandidaat coördinator externe betrekkingen zal ik namelijk komende periode weer veel te doen krijgen, maar dat kan ik wel gebruiken na deze lange tijd rust. Ik heb er nu al zin in om ermee aan de slag te gaan!

The coordinator of external affairs Imagine: after a nice study time, during which Japie has provided fun activities, has acted as intermediary in education and has helped you make friends for life, you can finally pick up your master's degree. And then the adult world lies ahead of you: it is time to go to work! You’d better be prepared for the career market…! As a study association, we want to ensure that this is actually the case. As a student, it’s important that you become familiar with the labor market during your studies, so that you can choose the right master.

And during your master you can continue conducting your research into companies, in which your future is hidden.

A coordinator of external affairs often presents itself as a board member who raises sponsorships and visits companies in his tailormade suit. Nothing could be further from the truth than saying those are my only tasks. During my time in the Japie board, I wanted to emphasize the importance of the student’s orientation process, rather than focussing on raising money from companies. This does not mean that bringing in money is not essential. The financial contribution from the industry is required to keep the association financially healthy and to keep activities accessible for a low participation fee. This low accessibility makes Japie an association consisting of a close group of chemical engineers, and that is precisely what is of added

value to companies. Companies are queuing up to get to know you — as a Japie member — and Japie only acts as intermediary; with the help of Japie, members know which companies may be of interest to them and to facilitate the orientation in this market by organizing lectures, workshops and company visits.

Cause of concern for study associations With the introduction of the Graduate School, which will be introduced in September 2015, a cause of concern for the study association of the TU/e came up. Since the TU/e believes that not every student association makes enough of an effort to familiarize their students with the labor market, and that the current existing forms of labor market orientation do not reach all target groups in an efficient way (such as foreign master students and PhD/PdEng employees), the TU/e would like to shift this responsbility from the study associations to a central body at the TU/e, such as the existing TU/e CareerCenter. By having a central body within the university that organizes the contact with companies and promotes these contact moments via study associations, the TU/e hopes to score better on career development.

My advice To conclude this column, I’d like to finish with some words of advice; prepare yourself well, also as a bachelor student, for the future .

A workshop, lecture with drinks or company visit may cost you some time, varying between an hour up to one day, but offers you the perfect possibility to network, and contact employees of a company. A lunch lecture is the perfect way to ask your questions about a company during lunch time. However, career orientation also starts with things that cost much less time: read, for example, the advertorials in the T-Licht or take a look at the company profiles on the Japie website. Taking these opportunities to familiarize yourself with companies will give you a great view of the labor market, and will lead to a job in a company which fits with your interest but also with your personality. And isn’t that better than just being hired by the first company that offers you a job?

Japie has indicated it does not agree with this plan. The introduction of a central body will not only be financially disadvantageous to the student, but will also reduce the quality of the labor market orientation, due to a smaller diversity in the available companies.

I have also noticed during my time as coordinator of external relations, that companies look for personal, direct contact with boards and (in this case) Japie members. Luckily, Japie is not the only opponent of these plans, so

they thought about the company and the work they were doing. The informal setting made this a nice way of asking questions.

It was the 17th of March when Japie had planned another excursion to a big chemical company. A group of fifteen enthusiastic students left at nine o’clock to reach Nyrstar Budel on time. Nyrstar Budel is a world leader in producing zinc and lead from ore. In this process, a lot of chemistry is involved. During the excursion we discovered what is making this company so successful in their industry.

Afterwards we were able to ask our last questions. This raised a couple of questions, especially from our master students, which made it more interactive. After some last questions and information from both sides it was time to go back to Eindhoven.

ith our arrival we received a warm welcome of Steef Steeneken, one of the process engineers of the plant’s company. With a short introduction he introduced us to the company we just entered, explaining what is produced and what it is used for.

Zinc is a very cost efficient way to protect other metals from corrosion, for example coating cars. This makes zinc one of the mostly used metals for this application and makes the zinc production a big industry.

Then we received a presentation about the processing part. In this, Steeneken clearly described which reactions take place in which reactors.

The process starts with concentrated zinc ore, which then is purified until

pure zinc. In an interactive way of explaining this, it did not take long before the first questions were raised: questions about safety, sustainability and other technical aspects all passed. All were explained clearly and with passion for the process.

One process was striking. This was the production of sulfuric acid, a typical side effect of the process because one wants to remove all the sulfur from the zinc ore. Since the company makes lots of zinc metal, tons of sulfuric acid are produced on a daily basis. By doing this they are one of the biggest sulfuric acid suppliers for the Chemelot campus in Geleen, where a lot of chemical companies are located such as DSM and SABIC. When the briefing was done, we enjoyed the beautiful weather which made the plant tour a pleasant part of the day. The only rain we felt was of the water cooling towers. For this tour we were divided in three groups, each guided by its own company employee. One of the employees was a former Japie member. The plant tour was very impressive.

The highlight was the electrolysis at the end of the process where the zinc finally had been won. For this, a whole new network of energy has been made, because the electrolysis process is consuming an enormous amount of electricity . This zinc would go to the furnace to be melted into blocks of several kilos. Striking was the way they tried to use everything again. All kinds of metals that were present in the zinc ore were sold, side products like sulfuric acid were sold, and they accomplished to get a real high purity of zinc.

Borrelruimtes van de TU/e (deel 3) Op 26 maart gingen redactieleden Eline en Floris op stap om de laatste drie borrelruimtes te bezoeken. Voor deze editie bezochten zij ‘De Salon’ (Van der Waals), ‘Het Internaat’ (Intermate) en de naamloze borrelruimte van GEWIS. Uiteindelijk bleek er een duidelijk kwaliteitsverschil tussen de borrels, waardoor een laatste conclusie niet lastig te trekken was.

ls eerste werd een bezoek gebracht aan de gloednieuwe borrelruimte van Van der Waals in Flux. Twee minpuntjes waren echter dat Flux, en daarmee dus ook de Salon, nog steeds slecht bereikbaar is en dat de borrelruimte erg warm was, wat lag aan het feit dat het gebouw nog veel kinderziektes heeft. Het gebouw is wel ruim opgezet, net zoals de borrelruimte.

Een pluspunt is het grote dakterras dat gedeeld wordt met Thor , waar helaas geen gebruik van gemaakt kon worden vanwege het bar slechte weer. De vloer had echter nog wel even gepoetst mogen worden voor de aanvang van de borrel, want deze was nogal smerig.

De Salon is, net zoals de F.O.R.T., opgezet met het oog op het grote speciaalbier-assortiment,

ongeveer 110 verschillende soorten bier.

De nieuwe houten bar is gebouwd in een cirkelvorm, om zo veel mogelijk gasten te kunnen bedienen. Aan de bovenkant van de bar hangen veel verschillende glazen om het goede soort bier in het juiste glas te serveren.

Het gebruik van de échte glazen van het merk bier is voorbehouden aan de tappers, ook wel Borreltenders genoemd. De tappers worden zo genoemd omdat er in de Salon niet getapt wordt. De Salon is namelijk een van de weinige borrelruimtes zonder tap. Vroeger werd in de Salon ook nooit bier getapt en deze traditie wordt doorgezet in de nieuwe ruimte.

Aangezien de redactieleden ook wel een speciaalbiertje lusten, werd in deze ruimte een speciaalbiertje besteld in plaats van pils. We werden snel geholpen door één van de Borreltenders, gehuld in een donkergroene polo, die ook enkele aanbevelingen deed met betrekking tot het assortiment. Een biertje is in de Salon al te verkrijgen vanaf € 0,60 voor een Warsteiner. De

prijzen van de rest van de biertjes zijn vergelijkbaar met de prijzen in de F.O.R.T. en verder is nog op te merken dat ook veel medewerkers komen borrelen bij de Salon en dat de ruimte dus goed gevuld was.

Na ons korte bezoek aan Van der Waals werd onze weg vervolgd naar de achterkant van IPO, waar de kamer annex borrelruimte van Intermate is gevestigd. De verenigingskamer van Intermate wordt namelijk iedere donderdag omgebouwd tot borrelruimte: de tafels en een aantal banken worden eruit gehaald en er worden statafels neergezet. De borrelcommissie zorgt dan voor de rest, zoals de voorraad en de kas. De borrelcommissie van Intermate heeft namelijk, net zoals in de F.O.R.T. een eigen voorzitter, penningmeester en voorraadbeheerder. Een voordeel van deze borrelruimte is dat zij een eigen achterdeur heeft, waardoor je niet na de borrel door het gebouw hoeft te zwerven.

Bij binnenkomst bleek de borrel gezellig druk te zijn en werd er fanatiek getafelvoetbald. Aangezien

onze kelen weer nodig gesmeerd moesten worden, werd er aan de bar een pilsje besteld. Evenals bij de Salon is in het Internaat geen tap aanwezig, maar worden enkel flessen verkocht.

Volgens de barbediende valt dit te wijten aan het feit dat er te weinig pils wordt verkocht bij Intermate om een tap rendabel te maken. Voor een kleinere vereniging zoals Intermate heeft de borrelruimte wel veel keuze, zo zijn er twee verschillende soorten pils verkrijgbaar, ongeveer vijftien verschillende soorten speciaalbier en een assortiment sterke drank. Een unieke toevoeging van Intermate aan de borrel is de Middeleeuwenchallenge, waarbij tijdens de borrel acht verschillende speciaalbieren gedronken moet worden die op de een of andere manier te maken hebben met de Middeleeuwen. De grote adder onder het gras is echter het hoge alcoholpercentage van deze bieren, waardoor slechts een klein aantal mensen deze challenge gehaald heeft. Nadat ons bier op was, merkten we dat het alweer tijd was voor de volgende borrelruimte: GEWIS. Bij binnenkomst van de drukke borrelruimte van GEWIS werd ons meteen weer de deur gewezen, aangezien we beneden in het MetaForum onze tassen en jassen moesten opbergen in een van de kluisjes. Het probleem was echter dat er geen tot zeer, zeer weinig werkende kluisjes over waren, aangezien hier ook de algemene kluisjes van de universiteit zitten en het merendeel dus al in gebruik was. Nadat uiteindelijk een werkend kluisje was gevonden gingen de redactieleden terug naar boven. De ruimte oogt als een soort “bruine” kroeg met een

grote houten bar, een aantal houten tafels en rood geverfde muren in plaats van donkere muren. Buiten de borrels om fungeert de ruimte ook als verenigingskamer, net zoals bij Intermate.

Dit heeft dan wel weer het aparte effect dat overdag leden achter de bar moeten lopen om koffie te pakken, aangezien het keukentje achter de bar zit.

Toen er geprobeerd werd een biertje te bestellen stuitten we echter op een ander probleem, namelijk dat het meer dan vijf (!) minuten duurde voordat er überhaupt een blik in onze richting werd geworpen. Als het nu ontzettend druk aan de bar was geweest zou het nog acceptabel zijn, het schandalige was echter dat er een aantal tappers achter de bar stonden te kletsen en niks te doen.

Net zoals bij de Villa wordt er in de ruimte van GEWIS met een pas betaald, die opgewaardeerd kan worden bij de studievereniging.

Aangezien wij als eenmalige bezoekers niets konden met het opstarttarief van € 5,-, werd ervoor gekozen om contant te betalen, wat alleen gepast kon. Een pluspunt van de borrelruimte was echter dat er wel veel verschillende soorten speciaalbier (van fles en van tap) beschikbaar waren voor redelijke prijzen. Er werd een tapper bereid gevonden om ons wat meer te vertellen over de ruimte, die nog vrij nieuw is. De ruimte bestaat namelijk

pas twee en een half jaar, vanwege de sluiting van het Hoofdgebouw en de verhuizing van de faculteit Wiskunde & Informatica naar het MetaForum.

Helaas had de tapper verder geen idee over de historie van de ruimte, wat een beetje jammer was. Hij kon ons wel wat vertellen over de favoriete borrel van iedere GEWIS’er, namelijk de Geschwister borrel, waarbij iedereen wordt uitgenodigd om zijn/haar zusjes en/of broertjes mee te nemen. Opmerkelijk was wel dat er ontzettend veel mensen in een kringetje op hun telefoon stonden te staren, waardoor het leek alsof de borrel helemaal niet interessant was.

Na het bezoek aan deze borrelruimte werd de hunkering om naar de F.O.R.T. terug te keren toch wel erg groot en vertrokken de redactieleden weer.

Eenmaal terug in de F.O.R.T., met een goed getapte Brand Pilsener in de hand, was het tijd om het uiteindelijke vonnis uit te brengen.

Een goede tweede en derde plek konden worden toegekend aan de ruimtes van Van der Waals en Intermate respectievelijk, maar het blijkt dat, na uitgebreid vergelijkend warenonderzoek bij de andere borrelruimtes, de F.O.R.T. toch altijd nog de beste borrelruimte op de TU/e is.

We zouden graag nog alle borrelruimtes willen bedanken voor het ontvangen van ons testteam gedurende het jaar!

History of chemistry

History of chemistry The beginning of the Sun’s fall was marked by the sign of the Scorpion (Scorpio), which kills itself in autumn and the Water Carrier (Aquarius) became the master of the waters of the Lower World.

History of early astronomy In this T-Licht, not the history of chemistry but some highlights in the history of astronomy are discussed. Astronomy is said to be the oldest of all natural sciences, dating back to prehistory. Mankind has always been looking at the sky and wondering about the meaning of it all. Every civilization on earth began naming and using the visible astronomical phenomena over the ages, starting mostly by identifying celestial objects with gods and spirits. Astronomy has its origins in many different sources such as mythology, religion, cosmology and astrology.

Prehistory and start of the Stone Age The earliest cultures related celestial objects to gods and spirits. They believed that these objects were responsible for natural phenomena such as the tides and seasons, but also periods of rain or drought. Due to this belief, the first individuals that gazed up at the sky professionally were priests. They were believed to have a divine understanding of the sky. This also explains the early connection between astronomy and astrology. The lunar calendar was the first functional astronomical tool, used for navigation and orientation.

Many lunar calendars were made on portable materials, such as bones, stones or pieces of antler, so they could be carrier around on extended journeys by hunters or nomads. One of the most famous archaeoastronomical finds of the prehistory is the Sun Dagger at Fajada Butte. It consists of three large stone slabs leaning against the cliff which channel light and shadow markings onto two spiral petroglyphs on the cliff wall. On the summer solstice, a dagger-shaped light beam pierces the larger of the two spirals.

Megalithic astronomy During the Stone Age, larger structures with astronomical significance were built. One of the most famous historic monuments is

Stonehenge in Amesbury, England.

The structure, dated around 2300 B.C., consists of a dirt wall which surrounds a circular arrangement of large, upright stones. Over the years, many archaeoastronomers have pondered about its significance.

Many of them think that Stonehenge represents an ancient observatory, although this opinion can be disputed. It is also thought that the site had both astronomical as spiritual significance as well.

In the 1960s, it was shown that Stonehenge was, amongst other things, an astronomical calendar. The Heel Stone was the first stone put in place at Stonehenge. It is a large upright rock that is stationed 77.4 meters from the center of the main Neolithic stone and earth structure of Stonehenge. It is placed in such a way that the summer solstice can be seen to rise exactly over it, viewed from the circular Stonehenge

enclosure. On the Heel Stone, a face can be distinguished that looks South, in the direction of the position of the Sun at local noon. The triangular shape of the Heel Stone might also indicate that it is a crude form of a sundial, as one side of its ‘face’ lights up in the morning hours, while the other is illuminated in the afternoon hours.

In Qrendi in Malta, there is a megalithic temple complex from around the fourth millennium B.C. This temple is among the world’s most ancient religious sites. Mnajdra is an astronomically aligned solar temple where at sunrise at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, rays of sunlight penetrate the lower temple and light up the building’s main axis. On the summer and winter solstices, the sunbeams fall directly on the edges of megaliths to the right and left of the temple’s central passageway.

More thorough research also pointed out that the newest temple, Mnajdra I, is oriented towards the open star cluster the Pleiades. This indicates that this part of the temple was used for astronomical observations or as a calendrical site. Mnajdra was also used for ceremonial sacrifices.

This is supported by the flint knives, restraining ropes and animal remains that were found at the site. Stone benches and tables also suggest the temple might have had a medical function serving as a healing center or to promote fertility.

Ancient Egypt The majority of Egyptologists have thought that the ancient Egyptian temples used to be oriented with respect to the Nile River. However, frequently temples were found that differ in orientation to this hypothesis and the orientation of temples far away from rivers remained a mystery.

Recently, it was shown that in ancient Egypt, temples were oriented in many different ways, of which multiple astronomically. Some are orientated in the Meridian line, some after solsitial orientations and some after different stars or constellations.

The most famous Egyptian historical site, the pyramids of Giza, are also said to have astronomical significance.

It is claimed that the three largest pyramids of the complex are aligned with the three middle stars of the constellation Orion , and that this correlation was intended as such by the builders. The Egyptians related the stars of the constellation Orion with Osiris, the god of rebirth and the afterlife. Some claim that more of the pyramids of Giza can be added to the constellation layout.

The Sphinx is likely to represent king Khafra and its lion-shape would refer to the constellation Leo. This means that the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx can be seen as a reflection of a constellational map with the Nile River representing the Milky Way. Zodiacal constellations Even though the Zodiac as we know it today with its twelve divisions has been in use since the ancient Greek

era, its origins lie even further back in time. The constellations of the ecliptic were elaborated and fixed stage by stage during five thousand years. The constellations were space marks to fix celestial areas to include the vernal, summer, autumnal and winter points. Not only bright stars, but also dimmer stars were included into constellations for this purpose. The constellations were not named after their exterior, as would happen thousands of years later in ancient Greece. In the middle of the sixth millennium B.C., the first four constellations were elaborated, possibly in the Indo-European culture. Because the stars were only divided into four constellations, their dimensions inevitably turned to be large.

The names given to the constellations were connected to religion. The Great Twins (Gemini) were connected to the vernal revival of Nature, the Mothergoddess (Virgo) became the symbol of the Sun reaching its highest point in summer, the Two-headed Archer (Sagittarius) became symbol of the fall or ‘wounded’ Sun and finally the Fishes (Pisces) were the symbol of the Sun’s presence in the water of the Lower World.

In the first millennium B.C. twelve star groups were distinguished on the ecliptic and this remained unchanged until the fifth century B.C., where it was reduced to the number of lunar months in a year. The twelve star groups were renamed in frames of ancient Greek traditions, and these are the names still given to the Zodiac today. Ram symbolized the spring, Cancer became the symbol of summer, the Balance (Libra), which was also briefly named Claws, became the neighbor of the Scorpion and Capricornus became one of the three water symbols. The final form of the Zodiac was developed and it retained the successive influences of many previous epochs and cultures.

It is clear that mankind has been fascinated with celestial objects since prehistory and that, even in early history, astronomical phenomena were studied and recorded.

Astronomy was applied in calendars and in the orientation of different buildings, some even with the function of celestial observatories.

Later on, constellations were drawn up and stars were named and mapped. Although most astronomical knowledge was linked to religion and the divine, the foundation of scientific astronomy was laid thousands of years ago.

Later these constellations were changed and renamed. Spring time became symbolized by the Bull (Taurus), the embodiment of the male reproduction principle.

The kingly symbol, the Lion (Leo), became the symbol of the summer.
