DSM prize puzzle

Het T-Licht

by: Lennart Help the Japie board members identify their salt solutions Since the Japie board members are almost relieved from their duty, Martijn thought that his fellow board members could use some preparation for the next study year. Therefore, he came up with a simple chemical test for the rest of the board. He gave his five fellow board members an aqueous solution, each containing a different ionic compound. Each compound has a cation (ammonium, calcium, nickel, potassium, or zinc) and an anion (bromide, fluoride, hydroxide, nitrate, or sulfate). No single ion is repeated. Using the hints below, can you help the board members to determine the ionic compound in each board member’s solution and its molar mass? Place your answers in the Solution Reporting Table. When you have solved the puzzle you can send your answer to tlicht.st@tue.nl. If your solution is correct you can win a digital camera, made available by DSM. You can send in your answer untill September 1st 2011. (Note: Each board member’s compound is in aqueous solution, which means that the compound is soluble. Therefore, any combination of a cation and ion which produces an insoluble compound, as determined from Table 1, cannot be one of the unknowns.)

T.S.V. ‘Jan Pieter Minckelers’

1. Marly’s compound has a molar mass greater than that of the one containing the hydroxide ion, but smaller than the one containing the ammonium ion. The compound with the largest molar mass has a cation:anion ratio of 1:2.

12

2. Nicky’s compound formed a precipitate when aqueous sodium carbonate was added. The compound with the middle value for molar mass did not contain a divalent cation. The compound with the second smallest molar mass formed a precipitate with aqueous barium iodide. 3. The molar mass of Sander’s compound is between 50 and 100 grams greater than the compound containing nickel. One compound had a cation:anion ratio of 2:1. 4. Frank’s compound contains all polyatomic ions. Yoran has the compound with the smallest molar mass. 5. Marly’s compound contains a transition metal. The compound containing zinc had the largest molar mass. The compound with the second largest molar mass formed a precipitate when aqueous lithium sulfate was added. 6. A precipitate was formed when a solution of iron(II) chloride was added to the solution containing the compound with the smallest molar mass. The largest molar mass of a compound is over 200 grams.

Hints: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Carl makes propylene oxide. The student from China has to make 8 kg of his substance. Abraham does not make polytetrafluoroethylene. The student who is from China, does not have to make toluene diisocyanate. Bertrand is not from the Netherlands if he has to make 6 kg of his substance. Propylene oxide has to be made not in amouts of 3 or 8 kg. One of the students has to make 6 kg of toluene diisocyanate. Dyon is not from Poland.
