Takachiho Legend states when Susanoo, God of Storm, terrorized Amaterasu, his sister and Sun Goddess, she hid in a cave plunging the world into darkness. The cave is called Ama-no-Iwato, the heavenly rock cave, and it exists in a small town in Kyushu called Takachiho. It is located deep in the forest of Miyazaki away from the bright lights of the city and pollution. Take the steps to uncover the mysteries of Shinto’s beloved goddess by visiting Takachiho Shrine and watch the kagura dance performance where they re-enact the legend of Amaterasu and her escape to the cave. The dramatic finale to the story ends with a dance where the cave opens, bringing sun and life to the world. Next to the shrine, take a boat ride to Takachiho gorge where you will witness gorgeous waterfalls and daunting rock formations.

The Thousand Paper Cranes "This is our cry. This is our prayer. For building peace in the world." Sadako’s memorial

SENBA SENBA ZURU ZURU

Through sad circumstances and inspiring life story, the crane origami became the international symbol of peace. It all started with a little girl name Sadako Sasaki. Ten years after the atomic bomb, she died as the result of leukemia caused by the radiation of the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. There is a legend in Japan, where a wish can be given if they can fold one thousand paper cranes. Her courage and determination led her to make one thousand paper cranes in hopes that it might grant her wish to recover. Through her illness, she stayed positive which aspired her classmates and others to find world peace. Sadako’s statue can be seen at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park beautifully decorated with a golden crane on top. People around the world who also wished for peace sent thousands of paper cranes in memory of her. Sadako’s story is one of many stories in the museum. This once in a lifetime visit to Hiroshima will inspire you to also take steps toward Sadako’s dream of peace.

Saginoyu Ryokan(Nagano)

Onsen 温泉 If you want to know about Japan’s culture, you have to get under the surface and see it bare… quite literally. Soaking in an onsen, hot spring, is the best way to get to know Japan and its people. Possibly nowhere in the world appreciates a good soak in the hot waters like Japan. Young, old, wealthy, or poor can mingle in this one location breaking social barriers and getting to know people in a relaxing setting. It is often referred to as 裸の付き合い (hadaka no tsukiai or naked

communion). Often foreigners are intimidated by the fact that they have to bathe

naked with others but soon realize that no one cares about your appearance or state of nakedness. They just want to appreciate the calming and power of the water. There are different types of hot springs with different herbs and minerals in the bath. Some onsen have unique features like herbal tea hot spring in Shizuoka, onsens with views of Mt. Fuji, sand and mud baths in Beppu, and an

京都 KYOTO

Nara may not be the largest town, but with its parks, temples, and 1200 sacred deer, Nara is sure to be one of the friendliest in Japan. Despite a turbulent history, Nara is the home of Buddhism in Japan. Home to Horyu-ji Temple, known as the oldest existing Buddhist temple in Japan, and the Nara National Museum, devoted to Buddhist arts, Nara is a must see for those interested in Buddhist history. The centerpiece of this magnificent city is the Great Buddha, one of the world's largest bronze statues. Standing at a towering 16.2 meters, this National Treasure in Todaiji Temple is a marvel for everyone to enjoy. Tourists are advised to visit Nara throughout the year to enjoy the natural scenery. During the spring, Mt. Yoshino is a perfect spot for Hanami. The view is so popular, it's considered one of the best cherry blossom viewing points in Japan. Before heading to your next city, stop by Nara Park to play with the friendly deer. Treasured by the locals, the deer were once thought to be messengers from the gods. Not only are these deer friendly, but you can even feed them deer crackers sold by local vendors around the park. Some deer even bow to visitors when being fed!

Japan's former capital is filled with tradition and culture around every corner. Home to geisha, temples, shrines, and other historic structures, a trip to Kyoto is essential for the full Japanese experience. As you walk through Kyoto's many traditional streets and paths, feel yourself immersed in Japanese culture. Kyoto is home to seventeen World Cultural Heritage Sites including Kiyomizu Temple and Nijo Castle. Kyoto is also home to the Golden Pavilion, a magnificent temple covered in gold leaf, a must see in Kyoto. If you were hoping to see a traditional Geisha in Japan, Kyoto is the best place to go. Visit the Gion corner, where you might just see a Geisha and her apprentice on their way to an important dinner. Before you leave Kyoto, a walk through the thousand red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine should be on your itinerary. The oldest and most famous shrine in all of Japan, follow thousands of torii gates that form an unbroken tunnel of red leading to the crest of Mount Inari.

The Culinary Delights With everything from sushi to sake and ramen to green tea, Japan offers a wide selection of culinary delights. Japanese cuisine features delicate and precise techniques to create delicious works of art. As one of the top food cities in the world, Tokyo has attracted more and more culinary attention worldwide. With such increasing popularity, you are sure to have tried some variation of Japanese food, but tasting the food in its country of origin is an eye-opening experience. Each part of Japan is sure to surprise you with its delectable local cuisine using the freshest ingredients from land and sea.

Sushi & Sashimi

Sushi is considered an accompaniment for beer and sake. All proper sushi restaurants serve their fish over rice, in which case it's called sushi, or without rice, in which case it's called sashimi or tsukuri. There are two main types of sushi: nigiri-zushi (served on a small bed of rice - the most common variety) and maki-zushi (served in a seaweed roll).

Izakaya An Izakaya is the Japanese equivalent of a pub. It's a good place to visit when you want a great meal, a wide selection of food, a hearty atmosphere and, of course, plenty of beer and sake. When you enter an izakaya, you are given the choice of sitting at the counter, at a table or on a tatami floor.

Tsukemono (Pickles)

Yakitori Yakitori are barbecued chicken meat, giblets, and leek on a skewer, seasoned with tare(sauce) or salt. It is a popular after-work meal and a great appetizer.

Tempura

Tsukemono are Japanese preserved vegetables such as radishes, Chinese Cabbage and cucumbers pickled in salt, rice bran, or miso. By pickling for a long time, the vegetables ferment, adding a special flavor.
