DESIGN CONCEPT

The project aims to re-claim and re-imagine a forgotten space to become a safe haven dedicated to all women and children who are victims of domestic violence in the UK. The purpose of the space is to offer the vulnerable user a safe, well-protected home and community. Focusing on providing assistance and security to support the needs of the user suffering from emotional, social and physical trauma corresponding to their current condition in relation the abuse. The space allow opportunities for the female victims to trust the specialists with their needs through out their stay. Guiding them in every step of their recovery and healing process. Whilst bringing opportunities to come together and engage with other users to focus on building a healthier relationship and interaction between a mother and child, as well as offering a series of functions that focus on self-strengthening and self-recovery which will contribute to how they can move forward into their next chapter- ending the fear.

The design concept is inspired by the metaphor of water erosion and coastal landforms, influenced by the site context. To insert an all encompassing form that suggests this internally erroded characterstic which then forms patches of negative spaces creating a new routeway through out the space. These forms will begin to weave and transform into envelopes of functional spaces within key areas. The metaphor is furthered in the context of a women’s refuge as it demonstrates how even the seemingly weakest element- the water molecule, can erode the tough rock. A sentiment that can be portrayed through a women’s refuge. Even if these women may feel week and distressed, the solidarity of togetherness that is reinforced by the refuge can begin to erode their adversity. The new design language encapsulates the nature of organic free forms of erroded landforms, heavily influenced by the site surrounding- the Solent Sea and its coast. The new structure becomes the new design ingredient identifiable as sets of insertions into various existing key spaces of the fort, whilst respecting its current condition as a scheduled monument. The old and new stands as a juxtaposition, creating a nice contrasting influence within the nature of the space. The organic form embraces the existing walls, producing a snug and protective component that users can use as a navigational device to familiarise themselves within the three level.

Using the Spitbank Fort- a scheduled ancient mon-ument situated in the Solent Sea, the space will be divided into three key areas that corresponds to three main factors- Emotional, Social and Physical. Allowing the user to move around throughout the spaces from private and quiet to the shared and public spaces as a reflection of their journey to recovery. Site Analysis Diagrams

PROJECT

RE-IMAGINING EVACUATION CENTERS Semester : 1st of Third Year Module : Exploratory Project Site : Old Truman Brewery, Boiler House - Building O, Brick Lane (Grade II Listed) Purpose: A place of refuge for natural disaster and conflict victims. This project was all about exploring our critical position as designers- philosphy, ethos and interests. Through this project, I wanted to challenge existing evacuation centers, exploring how design can fulfill the need of refugees and how an interior could ensure that the user are not dehumanised during a time of emergency. The design aim to bring a solution for inadequate temporary shelters and evacuation centers around the world; designing a scheme that extends its functions to cater refugees based on their basic human needs, establishing a series of scheduled functions that contributes to the recovery and well-being of the users. The design scheme proposes a temporary living space for users within an urban, public realm. The Half-way House derives from the concept of a ‘town’ and ‘neighbourhood’. The existing chimney at Boiler House replicates that of a town plaza and acts as the heart of the circulation route. The spatial strategy considered 6 key elements that formed its schedule: FOOD SHELTER HEALTH EDUCATION RECREATION ENTERTAINMENT These determined the main functions within the interior space, integerated into the language of the ‘new’ a total of 9 inserted structures carefully placed around the chimney REGISTRATION/ MAIN RECEPTION TRANSITION SPACES LOUNGE + CALLING POINT KITCHEN + DINING CLINIC ACCOMODATION OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND CLASSROOM + STUDY HUB + LIBRARY The scheme aim to establish an innovative, adequate home for refugees who are in need of a temporary place to stay and recover during a critical time. The concept of neighbourhood allows the space to bring the user together, establish conversations and interactions forming a new bond of community within.

03/ ULTRA-VIOLET WOMEN

A COLLABORATIVE BRANDING PROJECT: 100 years of #ULTRAVIOLET WOMEN

Semester : 2nd of Second Year Purpose: Designing an inclusive display-pop up store in celebration of 100 years of Women. A collabrative team project with Fashion Marketing, teaming up as a Group of 5. As a team, we developed 100 years of ultraviolet women as our brand focus. To encourage women of all ages to feel confident wearing our product influencing body positivity through inspiring words. Our product- a collection of laced bodysuit, combined with hand-embroidery in contrast to the tough and powerful words women used to describe themselves. We integrated the celebration with the 2018 colour of the year- Ultra-Violet and developed an all inclusive set of brand vision and interactive pop up store. Our aim as a team was to let our full pop-up experience, become personal to the customer and all women different and alike.

UV threads and neon lights navigates the way, taking customers through the exclusive bodysuit collection where they are able to personalise their very own order of body suit. Selecting their words of empowerment, the design process of their body suit transformed into an intimate garment which are then ready to take home or delivered to their doorstep, ready to wear and will continue to give encourgement throughout their journey of self-love.

BRAND MOODBOARD

The shape of the display replicates that of a women’s figure, wanting to bring our customers on a personal journey of empowerment and encourage them to share stories. Travelling through the store, the customers will discover women throughout history who have made an incredible impact in the world for over 100 years. Interactive wall displays enable the customers to learn about our 100 years of ultraviolet women. There are some reflective mirror amongst the framed images in hope that as customers walk through, they are able to capture a glimpse of themselves becoming part of the celebration.

04/ CONTAINER PROJECT

AN INTERACTIVE POP-UP SPACE

Semester : 1st of Second Year Design Criteria: To design a commercial space using shipping container. Container Dimensions: 2x 20ft, 2x 30ft MATERIAL PALETTE

For this project, I was left with a very open briefto design a commercial space but using shipping containers. Instead of going through with the traditional commercial spatial design, I wanted to challenge myself with the brand or organisation that I wanted to design for and create a unique way of delivering the brand ethos. The organisation that I have chosen to design for is Shelterbox. It is a non-profit organisation who believes shelter is a human right, The staff, volunteers and donors work together to provide key essentials for families and communities who lost their homes due to devastating events such as extreme natural disaster and conflict. During the time of this project, I was already very interested in designing for the greater good and designing with a sense of purpose. This particular project targets more towards the branding side and I wanted to create a space that is unique, unconventional and highly interactive that will reflect the harsh events occuring around the world. My main focus was how I could deliver the harshness of these events and pack that into the space, creating a meaningful impact that not would only move the public but to also capture the reality that many faces everyday.

CONTAINER 3D ARRANGEMENT

The scheme consist of two 20ft and two 30ft shipping containers that becomes the basis of the walk-in installation. Which showcases four different installation pieces reflecting different calamities and conflict. SCHEDULE DIAGRAM
