A journey of initiation Ten 6th-form students together with their teachers Esperança Guàrdia and Ignasi Cebrian spent a week in Shrewsbury, a town in England, in October 2014. The students stayed with English families and worked as assistants in different state primary schools in the area. The reason for this trip: we have been teaching the subject of “Science in our modern world” in English in 6 th Form in our school for three years. Spending a week in England was part of this project. Shrewsbury has a strong link with science, or rather, with a very renowned scientist, Charles Darwin. Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 and lived in this town for the first 27 years of his life. We could say that Darwin started his journey towards becoming a scientist here, in this town. The journey that led him to propose the theory of evolution. Charles Darwin took a coach from Shrewsbury to Plymouth where he embarked on “The Beagle”. On this ship he sailed around the world as an official naturalist, a job that enabled him to make many observations that would later be the basis of his theory of evolution. This long journey would later be the source for “The Origin of Species”, his masterpiece. For our students this trip was also a new experience. They realized that using a language, interacting with their bosses, students and families and making themselves understood was a challenging task but also vital in the process of learning a language. To them it is like seeing those words and the grammar learned for so long taking shape. This trip will surely enable them to communicate better in English in the future.

OUR GROUP AT LIVERPOOL AIRPORT

SHREWSBURY (England) October, 9th 2014 Nine o'clock, in front of the high-school seven cars, 10 students, 2 teachers, and lots of parents. We are ready to go. We arrive in Barcelona one hour later, we are a bit lost but finally we find our plane. We get in the plane. Our flight lasts one hour more or less, and that’s when we change the brilliant sun of Barcelona for the rainy, cloudy, foggy and windy England. We have finally arrived. We take our luggage and we leave the airport. Mr. and Mrs Sower, take us on a bus to Shropshire, where most our host-families are waiting us. Everyone leaves with the new family. We won’t see each other again until one week later. We are afraid. My experience In my case, I went to Telford with Annita and Finn. They live in a cozy house, with two lovely dogs and two cats. When we arrived, we had dinner, and I went to sleep, I was really tired. Next morning, I went to visit some landmarks like the Iron bridge, we drunk a coffee and we walked into the shops. On Monday, I started my job at Aqueduct Primary School. I arrived and everyone was nice to me. I went with Mr. Butlers, with the little kids to help him. I spent five mornings with them. I learned a lot, I found a really interesting way to teach kids, and a really good education system. I had lunch with the teachers and before lunch time, I went with Mr. Simmons, with the older ones. I helped the teachers as much as I could and it was one of my best life experiences. I loved how kids were anxious to learn every day more and more and how teachers enjoyed doing their work. Finally on Saturday I met all my classmates again and all of us had had an enjoyable week. We seemed very happy, and we took the plane back home. In my opinion, it has been a week that I will never forget and I also think that this kind of trips should be more usual so that pupils can learn about the different kinds of culture, way of life and finally, I think our education system should be more serious like theirs and we could have a better way of life.

BIG BROTHER Big brother is a reality show which is about communal living amongst the contestants. 18 people live in the same house for 3 or 4 months. This house has got cameras everywhere, even in the bathroom, so the people outside can see what they are doing all the time. The contestants fight each other very often, and they also might fall in love. Every week each contestant must give a vote to another contestant of the house to nominate him/her. There are 3 or even 4 people nominated who have had more votes. Then, the audience decides who must leave the house. At the end of the program, there are only 3 people left. The audience decides who’ll win and the winner receives a lot of Money. Many people think that this program is for uneducated people, but I think that it’s not. You can enjoy watching it!

The Simpsons

The Simpsons is a comedy programme that talks about how an American family lives. For me it is the best cartoon programme on TV. Homer Simpson is the father and the most stupid member of the family. Marge is the mother and probably the most mature and serious person. Bart is the oldest child/son and the most inmature one. Lisa is the oldest daughter. She's younger than Bart but she's the most mature and smart one. Maggie is the little daughter and still a baby (she has been a baby for 20 years). They have a dog and a cat too. If you want to laugh I recommend this TV programme. You can find it on Antena 3 at midday.

OUR HOLIDAYS Mireia and Mart are on holidays, and they phone each other to explain their experience and the things they like the most Marta: Hi Mireia, how are you? How are you holidays? Mireia: Hi Marta, it’s nice to hear from you. My holidays are great. I’m in Costa Rica. The beaches are so clean and wonderful. What about yours? Marta: My and my family decided to go to India to learn about a different culture. It’s really exotic but it is so stressful and crowded. Mireia: Really? It’s very peaceful and quiet here. I’m just taking a breath before starting the school and chilling my mind Marta: I have sent you a photo of the market that we visited today. Its looks like the area is very noisy and you will see that there are lots of people trying to sell their goods. Mireia: Yes! I have already seen it! I suppose it is interesting and nice to visit but maybe I wouldn’t enjoy it. I can’t stand crowded places. Marta: It’s hard to imagine but you would get used to it. Mireia: Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays. See you when you come back. Marta: The same to you. See you then. Kisses.

INTERVIEW WITH SPIDERWOMAN S: Ms Aida Roldán, Spiderwoman, thank you for accepting to do this interview A: You're welcome D: What happened to you so that you became a spiderwoman? A: A laboratory spider bit me, and I turned into spiderwoman S: What does it feel to be spiderwoman? A: I can see perfectly, I'm stronger and I can climb, and before I couldn't D: What things do you do to help people? A: When I hear people scream, I go to the place where the person is and I help him or her with my spiderweb S: Is it difficult to keep a secret like yours? A: Yes, it's very difficult because people can't understand you, and it's not easy D: Is being spiderwoman a problem for you or is it just normal? A: I think it is a problem because people can't know I'm spiderwoman. And it's very hard for me to have two identities. S: What powers do you have? A: Now I can throw a spiderweb, I can see in the dark and I can climb D: Do you eat the same food as the other people or did you change your diet? A: No, no. I eat the same food I used to eat before the transformation S: What would you think if there were another person with these powers? A: Why not? I think that another person can have my powers, just as spiders have them, too D: Do you like to be a heroine? A: Yes, I'm satisfied wwhen people are ok thanks to me, but it's a difficult job. S: Finally, the last question in this interview is, how about a romance with another hero? A: Well, I have a romance with Superman D: The interview has come to an end. We, like most students, are all the time thinking of our future and which university studies we will choose, so we are worried, due to the fact that this decision will change our lives. It's the opportunity to fight for our dreams and study what we want.  Caline: So Laia, I heard you want to study design next year, right?  Laia: Yes of course! I've always wanted to study something related to art. When I was younger I used to spend my free time drawing and creating my projects. I'm very creative person so all the time lots of ideas come to my mind and I would like to put them into practice.  Caline: But don't you think it's hard to succeed as an artist?  Laia: Maybe, but I'll never know unless I try, and I prefer to follow my dreams first.  Caline: But it's important to be realistic as well...  Laia: Yes but I don't see why I should become someone that I don't want to, just because I might make money more easily... Everyone is different in this world, and everyone has creative side, and I believe that mine is to be an artist.

A BAD EXPERIENCE This happened one day when I was watching a movie on my computer at around 3 o'clock, and I was really into the plot. Two of the characters were arguing really loud – I could hear them through my headphones, so my parents wouldn't notice – but one moment they stopped and looked at each other in silence. Then I heard something that was clearly someone calling my name. In my house we have a storage room where you can go only through the room I was in. It is very small and always cold, but more importantly, no one can enter that room without me knowing it. But then why had I heard someone calling me? I paused the movie and I looked at my dog – she was quiet and relaxed, almost sleeping in her small bed – as if she hadn't anything. At that moment, I thought it had been only my imagination, but then it happened again. Someone said my name and it came from the storage room. I was shocked and didn't want to go and see what it was, but curiosity took control of me and made me open the door. I swear I saw something in there; it was like a shadow, but with a solid body. It looked me with very open eyes but I quickly lit the light of the room as if my life depended on it, and the shadow disappeared. Now, I can't tell if all the story was just really my brain playing games with me or a real thing. Of what I'm sure is that I will never search for a voice that calls me if I don't know whose it really is.
