PRESIDENTIAL VISIT This summer, President Barack Obama visited the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to welcome, Juliรกn Castro, as his newest Cabinet Secretary. After concluding the welcoming ceremony, President Obama and Secretary Castro took time to visit with a group of Melwood custodial employees. Deborah Fisher, Melwood Project Manager and a team of nine Melwood employees enjoyed a brief conversation with the President and took a photo to commemorate the event.

CAMP ACCOMPLISH Camp Accomplish is a fully inclusive program for youth and teens, with and without disabilities, aged 5-18. When not riding, we focus on strengthening the rider’s understanding of how to care for horses and the importance of safety around the animals. All riding lessons are customized to meet the individual rider’s needs and comfort level.

Melwood kicked off our 2014 fiscal year with a 50th Anniversary Gala celebrating our rich legacy of providing job opportunities and supportive services to people with differing abilities. 250 guests attended the sold out event to celebrate Melwood’s 50th year, our mission and, of course, the people with differing abilities that Melwood serves.

AWA R D S P O T L I G H T F O U N D E R ’ S AWA R D Earl Copus | Earl Copus was presented with the Melwood Founder’s Award for the many contributions he has made to the community of people with differing abilities and to Melwood’s success. Mr. Copus joined Melwood in 1966 and led the organization from a greenhouse serving six individuals to a multi-million dollar organization that has provided employment and supportive services to thousands of people. Mr. Copus served as the CEO for more than 40 years before retiring in 2007.

A D V O C AT E A W A R D Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md) | Melwood honored Congressman Steny H. Hoyer for his commitment to people with differing abilities. Of his many accomplishments, Congressman Hoyer brought the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to overwhelming approval in the House in 1990. This landmark civil rights legislation, signed into law on July 26, 1990, has helped millions of Americans with differing abilities enter the workforce and achieve independence.
