inancial support from Augustea Shipping Services has enabled Sailors’ Society to develop an innovative new mobile phone application, which is set to revolutionise the way port chaplains report on their work. Using global positioning data and an integrated customer-relationship management system, the app will help port chaplains and ship visitors better prioritise their time, and will offer a joined-up service for seafarers. It will also provide Sailors’ Society with near real-time reporting, allowing the organisation to become better

informed about the impact of its services for seafarers globally. The user is able to view the vessels in port and those due to arrive, and they can create a job list of ‘favourited’ ships. Following a simple, intuitive process, the user is guided through the visit – including checking in, a status update and statistical reporting. The admin dashboard informs support staff and management, in real time, of the location and status of the ship visitor, as well as compiling narrative and statistical reports. The data is then stored and can be

interrogated and analysed using various reporting methods. The application is now live and being introduced to port chaplains and ship visitors around the world, in conjunction with the relevant training required to use it effectively. Sailors’ Society would not have been able to do this without the generous funding of Augustea Shipping Services and sincerely thanks the company for its support. Thanks also to Marine Traffic, which provided the ship-positioning data through its Application Programming Interface (API). The Society is now looking to develop a version of the app for seafarers, enabling them to make contact in advance of arrival at port in order to access appropriate welfare services.

A team of 17, drawn from across the industry – including representatives from Bunge, IMO, Clarksons, HR Shipbrokers, Lloyd’s Register, Swire, Thoresen, Meygen and Sailors’ Society, as well as those with family connections to the sea – took to the streets for the 35th London Marathon. Ian Offland, director – fleet operations for Swire, said: ‘As a member of the shipping community, and having served at sea, it’s been great to be part of Sailors’ Society's marathon team and raise funds towards its worldwide work with seafarers. Participating in the London Marathon is an experience that will remain with me forever.’ Sailors’ Society’s Riva dos Santos, port chaplain for Paranaguá, Brazil, was running the London Marathon for the first time. ‘The opportunity to run for Sailors’ Society and fundraise to improve seafarers’ lives is amazing,’ said Riva. The runners enjoyed a welldeserved post-race massage and celebrated with friends and family at Pall Mall’s magnificent Institute of Directors. If you are considering running the London Marathon in 2016, Sailors' Society can offer you a guaranteed place and would be delighted to have you as part of the team. ABSEILERS DROP 540FT FOR SEAFARERS IN NEED More than 50 supporters of maritime charity Sailors’ Society came together at the weekend to take on London’s mighty Broadgate Tower in an adrenaline-fuelled challenge. The abseilers dared to drop 540ft from one of London’s highest skyscrapers, raising more than £32,000 for Sailors’ Society. Clear blue skies and calm winds made for stunning views across the city, including landmarks such as the Gherkin, the Shard and the beating heart of London town – the thriving River Thames. Among the 59 adventurous supporters were Nigel James, of LOC Group, George Papadakis, of AP & A, Spinnaker Recruitment and the Jeanius Consulting crew, as well as Sailors’ Society’s chairman, Alastair Fischbacher, trustee Jon Holloway, and the charity’s Tilbury and London Gateway port chaplain, Frans Sahetapy. Alastair said: 'It was fantastic to join together with other Sailors’

Society supporters for a truly unforgettable experience. Our merchant seafarers are the lifeblood of our industry and it’s good to be able to raise awareness of their welfare needs. The view from the top was great – as long as you didn’t look down!' The event was sponsored by Reed Smith and T-shirts for the charity abseilers were sponsored by Clyde Marine Training. Funds raised will go towards Sailors’ Society’s work transforming the lives of seafarers and their families in need – at home, in port and at sea.

Why did you want to work for Sailors’ Society? I immediately connected with the cause and felt compelled to help. I felt strongly that the issues facing merchant seafarers, who put their lives in danger on a daily basis to bring us all the commodities we often take for granted in life, was something people should be much more aware of.

and trust fundraising at Sailors’ Society. In our team, we work hard, but we also have fun.

What is the best thing about your role? Finding out about the workings of the shipping industry is fascinating. All the supporters I have met have been incredibly nice and helpful. I’m also enjoying using the skills and experience I have built up to help shape the strategy for corporate

PEAK OF SUCCESS FOR MOUNTAIN ADVENTURERS Singapore Maritime Week 2015 got off to a great start when 45 industry teams scaled Borneo’s Mount Kinabalu to raise funds for Sailors’ Society. The third Asian Challenge, sponsored by Cargill and Rio Tinto – with support from Noble Group, ABS, the Baltic Exchange and Wilhelmsen – raised US$570,000 for the Society’s work. The fastest team trophy was taken by Hong Kong-based firm Caravel Group; its climbers completed the ascent in two hours and one minute. The highest fundraiser was Noble Group, which raised US$35,200. Funds raised from the Asian Challenge will go toward the Society's Gift of Education

fund, providing education, computers and transport for seafarers' children, and the Gift of Welfare fund, which will include connectivity for seafarers' families. On 22 April, the Society hosted its annual drinks reception at the elegant Singapore Cricket Club, sponsored by Bibby Ship Management and ABS. Support also came from FCM Travel as bronze sponsors, and World Fuel Services, Aon, GAC and Bernhard Schulte Ship Management. More than 400 industry guests attended and a prize draw raised US$2,500 to support the charity’s work with seafarers in Asia and around the world. Chris Stone, chief operating officer at Bibby Ship Management Group, said: ‘We were delighted

to participate in Sailors’ Society's event in Singapore to help raise money to support seafarers. 'Bibby Line Group has a strong "Giving Something Back" corporate social responsibility programme, which supports local communities and seafarers, so we were very pleased to be part of – and, in turn, actively support – this initiative. It was a great event and we were delighted to have been able to help.’ The charity also announced two initiatives: the launch in Asia of its Wellness at Sea coaching programme, with support from RightShip, and sponsorship of four scholarships, on two courses being run at the Singapore Polytechnic, under the MaritimeONE programme.

EVENT DISHES UP MILLIONDOLLAR DONATION

Sailors’ Society Ambassadors receive certificates of recognition

Sailors’ Society’s annual Hong Kong Shipping Dinner, held at the Conrad Hotel on 5 March, raised a massive HK$1.1m (£90,000) for seafarers and their families across the world. The live auction was a particular success, thanks to a cruise donated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company and a China and Birmah antique map donated by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Main sponsors Pacific Basin

and Noble Group have backed all four Hong Kong dinners. In their speeches, PB Subbiah, of Pacific Basin, and Raghu Raghunath, of Noble, endorsed the crucial work of the Society as a global seafaring charity, and encouraged guests to dig deep and show their support. PB Subbiah (Subi) said: ‘It’s truly gratifying to see that the Society raised as much money at this dinner as it did at the last one. It shows that, despite the terrible

shipping markets, our hearts are still in the right place. Kudos to Sailors’ Society for the great work it does.’ Raghu Raghunath, vice-president at Noble Chartering, added: ‘Noble Group takes pride in continuing to support this noble cause and in caring for the welfare of seafarers worldwide; we acknowledge their contribution to global supply chain management. The event was a fun night, bringing together the who's who of Hong
