Let’s drink that every nation Will live to see the bright day’s birth When ‘neath the sun’s rotation Dissent is banished from the earth, All will be

Kinfolk free With neighbours none in enmity.

BOOK PRESENTATIONS IN SLOVENIA (by Zvezda V. Košir and Tina Bučar, students)

In Slovenia, every student is compelled to read at least three books a year at home. Two are chosen by teachers, but each student may choose the first book by themselves according to their preference. The aim is to present each book to schoolmates so as to give them ideas for the future books they want to read. The first step was to visit the public library where the student chose their books with the help of the librarians. The sudents had a couple of weeks to read their books, then we wrote presentations at school. After another week of learning the presentation by heart, the students make presentations for their schholmates. Another positive side of the presentations is to give your schoolmate a feedback so they can improve their presenatation and public speaking skills in the future. Each presentation included a handcrafted item inspired by the book. Activities carried out by:

BITS AND BOBS

Celebrating 100 years from the death of Ivan Cankar Ivan Cankar (1876-1918) is one of the most prominent Slovenian writers. He is the author of, among other titles, the short story A Cup of Coffee, which describes his struggle with profound feelings of guilt over his rejection of a cup of delectable drink. From A Cup of coffee (translated by Louis Adamič): “Three or four months later a strange woman brought a cup of coffee to my room. Suddenly I felt a sting in my heart. I wanted to cry out from pain. I shivered, my whole being trembling in stark agony. For a man's heart is a just judge; a man's heart does not concern itself with paragraphs in statute books or trifles.”

BITS AND BOBS Our project’s main objectives are: - to enhance students’ reading habits; - to improve students’ literacy and language skills; - to foster students’ self-esteem; - to help students develop multicultural understanding and tolerance as well as banning stereotypes; - to enhance intellectual recognition, social awareness, social responsibility;

- to improve our students’ entrepreneurship and volunteering skills.

READING WITH THE DISABLED (LEARNING ABOUT BRAILLE WRITING SYSTEM) In October, when the world celebrates International Language Day, our school had two special visitors. Andrej, the librarian from our public library, and Robert, who is visually impaired. They helped us understand how a visually impaired person perceives the world, how we can help such people, how we can talk to them, how we shouldn't be afraid to approach them. Robert showed us some everyday items like a mobile phone, a wristwatch and how he uses them (he uses a reading app on the phone, his wristwatch tells him the time). Both visitors showed us how the Braille writing system works, we tried reading short sentences and even tried writing them on a special typewriter. We could literally 'step in the shoes' of the blind by putting on special glasses that simulate different vision impairments. Andrej presented us with specially adapted books for the visually impaired that not only use Braille writing system, but also have illustrations – different surfaces that convey different notions (smooth, ribbed, spiky, soft surfaces). We really enjoyed the lesson and learned not only the different writing system but also testing our senses and shedding some stereotypes about the visually impaired people.
