A group of five certificates relating to Thomas Francis Bullen, 1912-39, all pre-printed with manuscript insertions, the first a second class certificate of education for no. 132 Sergeant Bullen of the Royal Flying Corps signed by Major R. Brooke-Popham, commanding 3 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, dated 23rd October 1912, the second appointing Bullen to be a Warrant Officer in His Majesty’s Regular Forces, dated 15 September 1914, plus 4 commissions with printed signatures of Kings George V and George VI, the first appointing Bullen to the rank of Major in the RAF, 1918, the second to the rank of Squadron Leader, 1919, the third to the rank of Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force Reserve, 1938, the final commission appointing Bullen to the rank of Wing Commander in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 1 September 1939, a little scattered spotting and a few minor marginal splits, folio sizes Thomas Francis Bullen, OBE (1887-1969). K.I.A. 7.1918, additionally stamped BOISDINGHEM 1916 1917, ST-OMER 1916, INCHY 1918, ST-ANDRE BOIS 1918 1916, stamped No 3. BAY. S.E.5.A., with cord tassels, 30.5cm long Captain Owen John Frederick Scholte M.C. was born in Hampstead, London and served during WWI with the Bedfordshire Regiment and 60th Squadron, Royal Air Force, he was accredited for 8 aerial victories and was killed in a motoring accident on 30 July 1918 aged 22, Scholte is commemorated in St. Riquier British Cemetery. 815* Alberto Santos-Dumont. An early 20th century papier mache bust of the famous pioneer aviator Alberto SantosDumont, modelled in flying jacket, helmet and goggles on integral base with his name in large capitals, 28cm high x 24cm wide Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), was a Brazilian aviation pioneer and dedicated himself to aeronautical study and experimentation in Paris. In his early career he designed, built, and flew hot air balloons and early dirigible and in 1901 he won the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower. In 1906 his 14-bis made the first powered heavier-than-air flight in Europe to be certified by the Aero club de France and the Federatrion Aeronautique Internationale. Santos Dumont is considered a national hero in Brazil and has countless roads, plazas, schools etc named after him. (1) £150-200
