Lot 47 Lot 47 LEIGH (SAMUEL PUB.), -URANIA’S MIRROR OR A VIEW OF THE HEAVENS, no date, c.1824, a set of 32 astronomical star charts, engraved by Sidney Hall and designed by Richard Rouse, Bloxham; The Illustrations were based on Alexander Jamieson’s Celestial Atlas, with the addition of punched holes, allowing them to be held upto the light to see a depiction of the constellation stars. The box cover depicts Urania, the muse of astronomy, 23cm x 17cm. See illustration £300 - £400
Lot 46 A VICTORIAN ALBUM OF LETTERS, signatures and clipped autographs, loose and laid down, to include Queen Victoria; George III, Rupert Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury; Lord Palmeston; Aubrey G. Spencer (Bishop of Jamaica); Joseph Wolff (the eccentric missionary); a John Ruskin letter, written c/o Mrs (Kate) Raven, Coniston, Ambleside and dated 3rd June (18)87, to a Lady Louis?, referring to a gift of silver; a letter written on behalf of the Grand Duke of Hesse (son-inlaw to Queen Victoria) from Osborne House, thanking Algernon Yockney for a drawing of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert. The letter refers to the last trip taken on the yacht by the late Grand Duchess of Hesse, who died in 1878 and was the second daughter of Victoria and Albert, together with the original envelope; John Barnard Burke Ulster King at Arms and geneologist (1814-1892); William Pitt Lennox, Army Officer and Writer (1799-1881); Sir Charles Wyndham Actor (1837-1919); Henry Irving; Heywood Hardy, artist (1842-1933); George V; Lord Rayleigh (Discoverer of Argon); Mary Tourtel (creator of Rupert Bear); together with numerous signed letters, clipped autographs relating to the aristocracy, clergy and political class; newspaper cuttings, sketches, all enclosed within red leather and pierced and carved oak boards.
