Norman Purdy was born in March 1940 In Sunderland. His love of tinplate toys and trains began as a young boy, when he was given his first train at Christmas. His interest in how things worked led to a career in mechanical engineering, working for Sandvik and Lucas Industries designing tools on CAD. In the 1970s, his interest in toys was re-ignited when he purchased a tea chest at auction that contained a Hornby clockwork train and various accessories and by the early 1980s his collecting was in full flow! When his daughter left home in 1986, her bedroom became his train room with raised platforms for the tracks and the collection spread to other areas of the house. He would often be found on Sunday’s mooching around antique fayres, which led to his collection diversifying into collecting tinplate cars, boats and Sunderland lustre alongside his childhood love of trains. Despite being diagnosed with arthritis at the age of 15 and spending much of his life in and out of hospital needing various replacement hips, knees, elbows and shoulders, he lived life to the full. He worked with several charities, qualified as a ballroom dance teacher and was a fan of target shooting. Norman died in 2010 and since then, his collection has been packed away.
