The Great Battles of 1870 and Blockade of Metz, 1st edition, London: Trübner & Co., 1877, half-title, 2 wood-engraved portrait frontispieces, folding map (with split to one fold, and small hole at intersection of folds), 3 folding maps in end-pockets, errata slip, 80 pp. advertisements, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, original deluxe binding of red full morocco, hand-painted crossed-flags motif to front board (partially chipped), spine and extremities rubbed, a few scuffs to sides, 8vo (22.4 x 14cm) Provenance: 1) The dedication copy, with an autograph letter signed from the author to dedicatee Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley (1833-1913) tipped to front free endpaper, and Wolseley’s engraved bookplate to front pastedown. 2) Presented by Louise, Dowager Viscountess Wolseley (1843-1920) to the Disabled Officers Residential Club (inscription dated 1916 to titlepage; bookplate). The list of contents does not clearly enumerate the number of maps required, but many library records appear to call for one map only. (1) £150 - £200
