Two botanical watercolours, possibly Italy, late 16th/early 17th century watercolour and bodycolour on laid paper, each separately mounted on a larger sheet, modern pencil captions ‘Iberis amara’ and ‘Ranunculus’ to mounts, respectively hand-numbered 10 and 49 in ink at foot, Iberis amara with fleur-de-lis watermark (mount with watermark of two crossed arrows surmounted by a star), Iberis amara with a few marks, Ranunculus somewhat spotted and stained, 41.5 x 25.5cm These watercolours recall the botanical studies commissioned by 17thcentury Roman antiquarian and collector Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) for his renowned ‘Paper Museum’, which was acquired en bloc by George III in 1762.
