An archive of scrap albums, diaries, genealogical information, copy letters, etc., relating to various generations of the Merivale family, c. 1800-1920, including a collection of approx. 400 autograph letters signed from Charles Merivale [1808-1893] to family and friends, c. 1850-86; an album titled In Memoriam C M [Charles Merivale, 1808-93], December 27th 1893, with contemp. press cuttings of obituaries, a.e.g., contemp. straight-grain morocco gilt by Houghton & Gunn, 4to; a scrap album with approx. 300 pp. manuscript including poems, watercolours, drawings, engravings, photographs, printed ephemera, etc., mostly relating to the Merivale family, c. 1830s-1890s, partly indexed at front; a scrap album containing approx. thirty tipped-in watercolour views and sketches, c. 1850s/1880s, some identified as by Merivale or Frere family members; an illustrated scrap album diary of c. 25 leaves on stiff card leaves, being an anonymous diary of a trip to Europe, c. 1895, including albumen prints and other illustrations; a scrap album containing mostly news cuttings, c. 1900/1920, much of Merivale family interest, other printed ephemera including menus, orders of service, postcards, documents, etc. tipped in, approx. 200 pp.; a slim album of sixteen pencil sketches by A.F. Merivale, five manuscript exercise books of reminiscences, c. 1915; a bound volume of Merivale family copy letters at Barton Place, c. 1773-1896, all copied late 19th c., approx. 200 pp.; anonymous manuscript diary of a trip to America in 1907, c. 100 pp.; WWI scrap album with jottings and news cuttings, c. 1915/16, relating to Philip Merivale, c. 100 pp.; notebook with copies of diary entries and letters from various members of the Merivale family in WWI, c. 1915; a manuscript memoranda book containing Merivale and Liddell family accounts and inventories, c. 30 pp.; small bundles of letters, legal paperwork, etc. relating to the Merivale family, letters from the Nevins family (1880s/1930), plus a small bundle of Merivale family letters from Barton Place and Ely Deanery, plus a few loose photos, sketches, genealogies, etc. Provenance: Merivale family. The archive here offered and accompanying four lots have as their origins Samuel Merivale (1715-1771), a dissenting minister who came under the influence of Philip Doddridge and spent most of his working life in Tavistock and Exeter. He married first Elizabeth Schellaber and following her death he remarried, this time to Betsy Manning. Their son John Merivale (1752-1831) married Ann Katenkamp (1754-1829). The only son of this marriage was John Herman Merivale (1779-1844), lawyer and literary scholar, married to Louisa Heath. This couple were to have six sons and six daughters, the oldest being Herman (1806-1874), followed by Charles (1808-1893), dean of Ely and historian of Roman Empire (married Judith Frere).
