A photograph album, late 1920s, a total of 110 black and white photographs on 24 leaves and endpapers, including photographs of Jessie Miller and her Avro Avian ‘Red Rose’, also including a photograph of her copilot Bill Lancaster, two photographs of Vickers Victoria aircraft [used in the evacuation of British residents at Kabul in 1929], a photograph of the first non-stop flight to India in a Fairey Monoplane J9479, November 1928, photographs of Jessie Miller as a young woman, family photos, photographs of Karachi, a crashed aeroplane, of the collection approximately 17 relate directly to aviation, 15.5 x 20cm and smaller, all corner mounted with white china ink captions to mounts, contemporary crocodile-effect padded synthetic cloth with spine tie, oblong folio Jessie Miller was a pioneering Australian aviator who, with Bill Lancaster in his Avro Avian Red Rose, tried for a long-distance flying record from England to Australia in 1927. Bad weather forced them down in Sumatra, but they continued on, and after 159 days Miller finally arrived as the first woman to complete an England-to-Australia flight. Three years after Miller’s pioneering flight, the first solo England - Australia flight by a woman was made by Amy Johnson. (1) £200-300
