John Steel was a maker from Killamarsh, Derbyshire, although he rarely put the placename on his clocks, most of which had square brass dials, some with thirty hour movements. He was son of Anthony Steel of Chesterfield and was born in 1737. He would have been apprenticed 1751-1756 to Samuel Laye of Leek, married Sarah Green at Killamarsh in 1776 and died in 1792. (Hughes, R G & Craven, M., ‘Derbyshire Clock & Watchmakers’ (Mayfield 1998) p. 173 & Figs. 174-175). £250 - £350
