1040 A fine and large George III pair cased watch, 7cm circular enamel dial inscribed Thos. Lozano en Londres, Roman and Arabic numerals, alarum setting dial, fusee movement signed and numbered 641, pierced balance cock, diamond endstone, pierced and engraved balance cock, the case chased with swags and a musical trophy, London 1773, shagreen outer case £2000 - £3000 1041 A George III silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch, signed T. Mawkes/172/Derby, white enamel dial, Roman numerals, minute track with Arabic quarters, case maker T.C, London 1777, later engraved on back of inner case Thomas Beeson 1862, 4 turned barrel pillars, verge fusee movement, finely pierced back cock cover, with three keys (two No. 4, one No. 5), suspended from a 25.4cm silver faceted belcher link chain, spring clip and T bar terminals, JR Birmingham 1898 (2) Thomas Mawkes was born in 1740, son of Derby watchmaker John Mawkes and nephew of another Thomas, a maker in Chesterfield. He was apprenticed to John Whitehurst FRS c. 1754-1761, and remained with him until c. 1776 when he set up on his own account in Sadler Gate, at about which time he was recommended to Matthew Boulton by Whitehurst to make clock movements (letter 11 Jan. 1777) a position it is presumed he turned down. He advertised for journeymen 1795 and died February 1821 being succeeded by his surviving sons, Thomas (1778-1854) who worked at Belper and William (born 1782) active at Derby until 1835. M.
