2337 A violin, by Lawrence Cocker, Derby, the two-piece back 35.5cm excluding button, rosewood tuning pegs and chin rest, outlined throughout with purfling, 59cm long overall, labelled and dated 1961; 19th century rosewood case Lawrence Cocker (1908 - 1982) was a well respected violin and bow maker who received a Diploma of Honour at The Hague in 1949. Closely involved with Lionel Tertis in the development of the large pattern ‘Tertis Model’ viola, he became known for his innovations in design and manufacture, such as his cooked copal recipe for varnish and his adaptation of split cane fishing rod technology to bow design. £500 - £800
