The aim of the British Government Arctic Expedition of 1875-76 was to reach the Pole for the first. Led by Sir George Strong Nares (1831-1915) the Expedition’s two ships ‘Discovery’ and ‘Alert’ sailed on 29 May 1875. After over wintering in the arctic and despite enduring many hardships, Nares decided that his route was impractical. The Pole was not reached until Peary’s successful attempt in 1909, although this is debated by some. The discoveries made by the 187576 Expedition were valuable “but were won at the cost of life and with much hardship, since the day had not yet come when scurvy was understood and could be avoided. £200 - £300 For more images please visit
