a COMPLETE solution

Despite hundreds of DIY and makeover programmes, true interior design is still seen as a privilege for the rich and/or famous. For interior designer BECKI LINLEY - from HMO letting specialists, Complete Solutions, and interior and refurbishment specialists, Trendenza - this has never been the case. By Nichola Hunter

ECKI and her partner, Brian Goonan are joint owners of interior design company, Trendenza and HMO licensing and letting specialists, Complete Solutions. Based in Edinburgh, CS celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011 but despite being happy with what they’ve achieved over the past decade, Becki isn’t a woman to rest on her laurels. Her interest in interiors was established at school in Yorkshire with an art and design course as she explains: “I remember helping family to renovate their homes and using the experience for school projects! The course was very progressive and we covered everything from creating story boards to layering textiles and how to manage budgets. I don’t think students today are taught much about budget, it’s more about the experience or the journey but really budget is one of the most important aspects of any project.” Leaving school, it wasn’t a career in interiors that Becki followed but fashion as she explains: “I was offered a position with a fashion company very quickly, which I accepted. However, many interior designers have flipped between interiors and fashion mainly because the buying and merchandising is very similar – it’s all about budget and creating an idea. With fashion you look at a collection right across the year not just for one period and it’s the same with interiors; a good design scheme will last longer than one season.” The fashion route also offered Becki the opportunity to travel which came with its pros and cons. “I was very fortunate that my options were allowed to develop, however travel moves you on from your friends quickly which is probably why I’ve been quite happy to move across the UK as well.” One person Becki didn’t leave behind on her travels was Brian who she met 13 years ago. “I was living in Glasgow but when we met I decided to relocate to Edinburgh and I’ve been here ever

since. Brian was already working in the property market running nursing homes and he also had a few development properties. Nursing homes are all about regulations and the pound note so HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) was a natural progression as it works on the same principles. However, people still need a ‘look’ or ‘style’ no matter how plain the design and we quickly started working together with me taking on the refurbishment side of the business.” Today, CS and Trendenza all work under the same umbrella and clients can choose at which point of the cycle to join. “Between both companies we can carry out a huge variety of work but we also have areas of specific expertise such as location.” Location has been the impetus behind CS’s recent advertising campaigns as Becki explains: “We wanted to have some fun to celebrate our ten years in business. As we specialise in HMO properties in the Morningside and Marchmont areas we thought some American-style hoodies emblazoned with the year and relevant street logo for students staying in our properties would be a nice memento of their time in Edinburgh. Also, in some ways we are a bit like a fraternity house looking after both the tenant and the landlord, each on differing levels and with differing requirements.” The requirements do differ massively. For would-be investors/parents CS can carry out an inspection visit to confirm if a particular property is HMO legal or can be converted easily and inexpensively before clients make an offer. However for the tenants/students, the wish list will be completely different as Becki recalls: “It’s an emotionally charged process as well, especially group viewings, there are lots of tears when a client doesn’t get the flat they want but we don’t leave them standing, we’ll find them something else. Tenants are clients too and some companies forget that. We are managing landlords’ properties but we’re

Becki and Brian's own home is a showcase of their building and design talents. managing both levels of expectation and experiences. We can be like parents too – we sometimes have to tell tenants off but we’re here if they need anything as well – we want them to be happy.” It makes for a varied working day but surely working and living with your partner adds to the stress? “It works in truth because we have the most honest conversations, it can be extremely difficult at times as we are both very opinionated and driven people! My skills are with people – I cultivate relationships with clients and sometimes that can get quite stressful. Brian has different stresses and it can be fractious but I don’t think we’ve ever gone home and felt enough is enough. We’d rather stay up all night fighting than go to bed on an argument! It works because we’re honest – if we disagree we say but we offer the reason why as well. My strength is viewing a property and seeing visually how it could work – then creating it and driving it to fruition. Brian is very good at the investment side and what the budget should be.” Budgets again! Ultimately it’s keeping to budgets that have allowed the continuous success of CS and Trendenza. “Many of Trendenza’s clients are commercial clients that have asked us to suggest a new look for their own home and the budget varies enormously from client to client. New clients are occasionally wary when speaking about budgets but once they see where you’re coming from they usually understand. Different budgets offer different choices and it stops wasting everyone’s time. A budget doesn’t limit choices it simply points you in a specific direction.” With such a variety of work, one would also think that there was a huge team behind each company but it’s not the case: “There are two of us at Trendenza and four of us at CS. It’s all about the one on one experience and we have an incredibly loyal and

hardworking team who take their roles very seriously. “We want to make CS and Trendenza unique and although there are nearly a hundred letting agents in Edinburgh, none of them are doing what CS is doing and focusing purely on HMO properties. It gives us the edge but it is a double edged sword as we have to maintain that standard as well. Historically we’ve kept to our targets and often exceeded them but that just sets the goal posts higher! I don’t want us to become stagnant and fall by the way side because we’ve got complacent.” After meeting Becki, I don’t think complacency will ever be a problem!

ELENA TORRES identified a niche market in air travel that is flying high above the industy's daily problems when realised that there were no private jet brokers in Scotland. This Eureka moment led her to leave her job and found Execair, a boutique air charter consultancy.

Are you a morning person, and how does your working day normally begin?

Q:

A:

Mostly with a meeting first thing. I’m not a natural morning person, never have been and never will be. So, I’ve found the best way to make sure I’m up nice and early is to have a meeting planned for first thing.

When did you first become a boss, and how did it feel?

Q: A:

I became the boss when I set up Execair in 2006, and again in 2012 when I launched Xclusive Travel Club. First time round it was rather scary as I had just quit my job to become self-employed and all of a sudden I was the one making all the decisions.

Was it always your ambition to be self-employed?

Q: A:

I don’t like being told what to do so starting my own business was my only option. I like to be in control of my own fate. Also, my parents were self-employed so it always seemed a natural thing to me. At what point did you realise there could be a market for a private air charter?

Q:

A:

After spending time working for a private jet handling agent I discovered that there was no private jet broker in Scotland. I was constantly sending business down south to London. Then, the Eureka moment came! What’s the best part of your job?

Q: A:

Flying private jet all the time and avoiding airport queues and long waits! I wish! The best part is delivering an immaculate service to our diverse clientele, and have them call to thank us for all our effort and hard work. That’s the best job satisfaction I can get. What’s your best career advice?

Q: A:

What breaks are employees entitled to during their working days?

Q:

Statutory minimum for employees over 18 years old is 20 minutes if working a shift of more than 6 hours. The entitlement is different for younger employees – for 16 to 18 year olds it is 30 minutes after working 4.5 hours and for any younger than 16 it is 1 hour after working 4 hours. All can be unpaid. Employees may be entitled to more if this is specified in their terms and conditions of employment.

A:

An employee is consistently late in arriving for work. He has been spoken to about this but there has been no improvement, therefore this is now being dealt with under disciplinary procedures. What steps should be followed?

Carry out an investigation with the employee seeking an explanation as to why he has been late on each occasion. If there are no mitigating circumstances, issue a letter to him inviting him to attend a formal disciplinary meeting - give at least 24 hours advanced notice of the meeting (may be more if company procedure states this), include any notes from the investigation or previous documents issued as a reminder. Inform him that he has the right to be accompanied by either a work colleague or trade union official and state that the possible outcome could be disciplinary sanction up to and including dismissal (even though it is unlikely that this would result in dismissal at this point). Have someone present to take notes on behalf of the Company. Hold the disciplinary meeting, giving him full opportunity to give his explanation and then adjourn to consider what action to take, if any. Reconvene at

An employee asks if he can bring his father to a disciplinary meeting – is this acceptable?

Legally, the right is a work colleague or trade union official. If the employer wishes, this could be agreed if it is felt that it would expedite the matter. If allowed, it is important that the father understands that he cannot answer questions on behalf of his son, but can ask for clarification and put forward points on his behalf.

A:

What is the maximum amount of award which can be made by an Employment Tribunal for unfair dismissal? Is there a difference if the claim is based on gender or disability?

Q:

Currently, the maximum award is £85,200 for unfair dismissal For any awards based on equality issues such as gender or disability, these are unlimited.

The September exhibitions include More than Just Post-It Notes from the diversified technology company 3M™. Business leaders have hailed encouraging progress in appointing women to the boards of Scotland’s largest listed companies as their number soared by 28% in just a year. A study by The Herald of Scotland’s leading 30 listed companies shows the number of women serving in the boardroom has risen from 29 to 37 in the past 12 months. As this is out of a total of 242 board positions, it means nearly 85% of directorships are still filled by men with just over 15% by women. Liz Cameron, chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “The first priority for a business must be to identify the skills and attributes they require to provide their company’s leadership. The individuals on the board need to fulfil these requirements.” Having a gender mix in a company’s leadership complements a business, and it is good that increasing numbers of businesses are benefiting from this. Ensuring the best leadership possible is a must for business growth and success. In all, eight companies out of Scotland’s top 30 recruited more women to their boards in the past year. If progress is slow, the UK faces the threat of mandatory quotas from the European Union.

MBA APPOINTS TWO NEW DIRECTORS AND CREATES NEW ROLES Aberdeen-based, Maggie Braid Associates (MBA), competence assurance specialists to the oil and gas industry, has appointed two new directors and created a new software consultant role. The posts, which are a result of recent internal promotions and a recruitment drive, have been created to support key strategic objectives for the firm; including the launch of a new business unit that will see an additional six posts created. Karen Bellu, who joined MBA in 2000, has been promoted to operations director and deputy managing director to Karen Bellu Maggie Braid. The role will give Karen overall responsibility for the strategic direction of the organisation, whilst also seeing her continue to project manage a number of MBA’s key clients. Following 11 years with the company, Ceri Webster will take up the role of director of quality assurance. Ceri will be responsible for the development and enhancement of MBA’s quality systems, as well as all the assessor and IQA open courses offered by the firm. She will also continue as project manager on a number of client accounts. Further to the launch of MBA’s electronic competency assurance system (Encompass), Phillip Carbis has joined MBA as software consultant. The new role will see Phillip manage all internal and external software projects; including any new product development. Two new project co-ordinator roles have additionally been filled. Commenting on the appointments, Maggie Braid, managing director of MBA, said: “2012 is a key year for the company strategically. As the company continues to grow it is crucial that we put in place the changes and people that will support both our existing and new clients.” MBA was formed in 2000 and employees 20 staff supported by eight consultants.

HAZEL BROWN, Pensions Director, tells us more... YOUNG ambition Taking a chance at the beginning of her career paid off for ambitious, young Aberdeen business woman AMANDA MCCULLOCH. LMOST thirteen years ago, the dynamic 36 year old English graduate from Stirling University was a trainee with a small recruitment company just starting up in the city. Today she’s Managing Director of what is now one of the most successful recruitment businesses in Scotland, Thorpe Molloy Recruitment. “I took a chance when I started at Thorpe Molloy because, essentially, it was a start-up business. I came in on a very low basic salary. I didn’t actually tell my dad because I didn’t know what he’d say and there was a commission base too!” she laughed. “I was thinking crikey, how am I going to pay the bills? But I thought to myself, I want to be part of something I feel excited about and I knew that if I did that, then it would all come good. I think sometimes it’s about taking that leap of faith.” Modestly, she says climbing up the ladder so quickly just “happened without me really knowing it.”

“I just developed as the business developed so it was quite a natural progression for me. I gradually became more engaged with the clients and candidates I was working with and began to understand the market place. I really just wanted to drive the business forward. Although I wasn’t a founding director, because I started so early on in the business and the business was so young, I felt really integral from the beginning. I remember going to speak to my bosses and asking what’s next, where do we go now and where’s the next opportunity for me?” She admits the road to success wasn’t always easy, it has taken a mixture of hard work, commitment and passion but the ambition was there from day one. “I’d a couple of interviews, and you get the usual stack of rejection letters. However when I first met company founders Judith Thorpe and Karen Molloy, to be honest, I was bowled over by their energy, enthusiasm and passion for what they were doing. It made me think - that’s what I want, I want to feel as passionate and enthusiastic about what I do. I also wanted to be part of something I felt was dynamic, growing and offered me the opportunity to almost create my own destiny, and luckily Jude and Karen were very supportive of that.” Her directors allowed Amanda to develop, pushing her “out of my comfort zone on occasions but I think that’s a good thing” she explains. “I say to a lot of people now, who work in the organisation, unless someone pushes you, you don’t know what your capacity is.” She started managing staff at just 24 years of age, something she remembers thinking was “going to be really difficult.” “One of the first people I had to manage was actually five or six years older than me. It was pretty challenging and I did get some kick-back but it was a learning curve and management shouldn’t be about age, it should be about ability. Yes, there were some difficult times along the way but you just push on. If you feel passionate about what you do and you believe in yourself, then you work through that.” So did the ambitious young business woman find it difficult working within Aberdeen’s oil and gas community I wonder? “I think at first it probably was awkward. There still is that old boy’s club network in Aberdeen but what I have found is that within the industry if you work hard and do a good job for people then you build trust and gain credibility. Initially it was difficult because people can make assumptions based on the fact you are a young female. What’s she really going to know about the oil and gas sector? I think you just need to get past that as once you win that credibility you are up and running.” Married with two young children, Amanda was back at her desk within weeks of giving birth. Having worked really hard for over a decade, she says she didn’t want to compromise her career over home life.

“It was difficult. I think it’s unfortunate that a lot of females do feel they have to pick one or the other and I think that’s sometimes enforced because child care costs can make it very difficult for women to go back to work. But I knew from the start I wanted to return to work. I was Associate Director when I had Will and because I was gunning for the Managing Director’s position, I didn’t want that to compromise the ten years I had worked really hard. You know it’s all about getting a balance and I’m lucky because my husband Steve and I manage to do a job share, which I know is very unique, and we’ve got some fantastic child care set up as well, so I have managed to balance it, but that’s not to say it’s always easy. I probably used to be a bit of a perfectionist, but with children you realise you just can’t control everything! It’s probably made me more focused in that when I’m in the office, I’m in the office. When I’m with my children, I’m with my children. I’ve probably learnt to segment my life in that way.” she continued. As part of an all woman board she explains that it wasn’t “something which was intentional, it’s just the way it worked out.” “It is nice to be part of a female board. Females bring a lot to a business. They are instinctive, they do look at business situations differently to men. I think it’s a shame there aren’t more female board members. It’s something which needs to be addressed by business not government. At the end of day it should be about getting the best candidate and you know, half the population is female so it seems ludicrous that women make up around only 15 percent of the members of company boards in this country. It doesn’t make sense. The best and most effective boards are about diversity and having a good collection of opinions.” For the last two years, her company has been selected in the top ten best companies in Scotland to work for and Amanda thinks it reflects Thorpe Molloy’s team spirit. “I’m a firm believer that people make an organisation. Results from our “Scotland’s Best Workplaces” submissions, showed that one of our key strengths was camaraderie. That’s a huge part of Thorpe Molloy. I think the business is only a successful business if you have a really good team pulling together, with everyone working towards a common goal. There are lots of agencies out there where every man is an island to a degree. They are doing their own thing, working to their own goals and targets. That’s important yes, but at the same time you can only do so much on your own.” In the future Amanda sees her role as continuing to grow the business. “We want to increase our head count and turnover and we really want to be the best within the north east market place, to be the recruiter of choice. We’re well on our way but there’s still a lot of work to be done. And for me it’s about developing people, allowing them to progress. It’s a really exciting time for us and although it’s a much larger organisation than when I started, the drive and enthusiasm to grow is still there. We just want to be continually improving,” she added.

As for the advice she’d give other young women wanting to enter business, not surprisingly she says “don’t be afraid to take a chance.” “I think I’d also say it’s about backing yourself as well. If you don’t back yourself then don’t expect others too. You have to believe in what you are doing and that you can achieve,” she says.

DR EMMA RAVICHANDRAN, Scotland’s Leading Aesthetic Doctor and Director of Clinetix Rejuvenation, offers advice on finding an Aesthetic Practitioner you can trust. In the UK, who can carry out injectable treatments?

Q: A:

Aesthetically trained Registered Doctors (GMC), Dentists (GDC) and Nurses (NMC) can carry out injectable treatments. Only a Doctor or a Dentist can legally offer you a treatment at the same time as your consultation. In July 2012 the General Medical Council banned remote prescribing of Botulinum toxin. This means that all patients must have a face to face consultation with the Doctor, Dentist or Independent Nurse Prescriber responsible for their prescription before their treatment. Who else offers injectable treatments?

Q: A:

Lack of enforceable regulation until now has led to a sharp rise in injectors from different medical and nonmedical backgrounds who are now offering facial injectables in a variety of locations, from beauty salons, hairdressers, hotels and even patients homes. Programmes such as ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ have encouraged Beauticians to exploit loopholes that allow them to offer these treatments after a one day course. These injectors do not have support from the manufacturers of the products, they do not have access to advanced training, and although they may acquire insurance, it is unlikely that the underwriter will offer complete protection for the patient due to the change in the law regarding remote prescribing.

Why is there such a wide range of prices for apparently the same facial rejuvenation procedures?

Q:

A:

Like many things in life, you get what you pay for in this industry. An experienced practitioner will have spent years and tens of thousands of pounds on recognised training. They will provide a complete range of treatments to treat the needs of any patient. They will use gold standard products to get the best and longest lasting results. They will have invested in building a specialised clinic that will comply with medical regulations. Like any other business, a practitioner who has low overheads can offer low prices. Short-term marketing incentives used by many practitioners selling cut price treatments may result in them using inferior products, or lowering the amount of product that they use so that you get inferior results that do not last very long.

How do I choose my aesthetic Practitioner?

Make sure your injector is a Doctor, Dentist or Nurse. Don’t be frightened to ask for and confirm their registration with the appropriate body. Ask for evidence of attendance of multiple training courses with a wide variety of products and techniques.

Do not use someone who offers to treat you in the comfort of your own home. Your home is not a safe environment to receive an injected prescription medicine.

Why should I choose an experienced Aesthetic Practitioner?

Make sure the practitioner provides you with a phone number so that you can speak to them if you have any concerns after the treatment.

Ensure that a 2-week review appointment is offered. The cost of the treatment should include this visit.

Finally follow your “gut instinct”. If the practitioner doesn’t seem to be listening or fully interested in your needs, walk away – even if all of the above is in place! You need to have someone who is a 100% devoted to getting the best possible result that you are looking for (rather than what they think is right for you).

Blush is the new bronzer... It has always been my passion to rid the world of over-bronzed orange faces! I believe a more natural effect is to add a little colour to the cheeks with blush instead of, or as well as, bronzer. I was delighted to hear that blush is making a huge come back this autumn. Seen at Mulberry and Michael Kors fashion shows - pretty and pink flushed cheeks were all the rage. A great way to wear blush is to opt for a cream version. It's easy to apply, long wearing and gives a natural effect. Cream blush is also great for dry or mature skins as it give a lovely glow to the cheeks. Eyes are in focus this autumn/winter! What is BB Cream, and is it the same as Tinted Moisturiser?

Q:

BB Cream stands for Blemish Balm Cream. The product was originally created by German dermatologists to help patients who had gone through laser skin surgery. The product was meant to soothe and regenerate the skin tissue. The craze was born in Korea where the product slowly started branching out to Japan, China, Singapore, and other parts of Asia - thus creating a hot trend worldwide. Here’s some of the major differences you’ll see between BB Creams versus Tinted Moisturisers. Please note some brands say they are a BB cream and actually are not, read below to see what to look out for:

Tinted Moisturiser A tinted moisturiser is normally a thin consistency compared to the thicker, creamy formula of a BB Cream. Good tinted moisturisers may be expensive, for instance Laura Mercier, £33, which is very good! It’s worth noting that tinted moisturisers can sometimes prove more expensive than foundations. Tinted moisturiers also offer no anti-aging ingredients, no whitening benefits, and low SPF (SPF 15-30), versus BB Creams that start at 30 and go as high as 40+.

BB Cream BB cream has soothing, healing properties, may have whitening benefits depending on the brand you purchase, and come in a limited number of shades, as opposed to tinted moisturisers that come in a wide variety of shades. They contain high SPF and contain anti-aging ingredients. They work as a foundation, concealer plus moisturiser, so no other base products are needed. Pigmented, thick and creamy yet lightweight and breathable are some characters of a good BB Cream. They are also long lasting I’ve seen eight hours or longer of wear time with a quality BB Cream. AMANDA HAMILTON, nutritionalist, entrepreneur, health guru and television presenter, brings us up to speed on her recent interview with MIKE HEATLIE, one of the world’s leading personal trainers and secret weapon of many celebrity bodies.

wonder if you read the recent headlines that a lack of exercising can be just as deadly as smoking – or perhaps you were too busy in the gym! Here at weight loss HQ we have been looking closer at the truths and myths about real physical fitness. I was lucky enough to interview Mike Heatlie, world leading personal trainer whose many famous clientele include none other than Gwen Stefani. When it comes to physical activity, Mike is an expert. He holds three degrees, and owns a private Personal Training Studio in Edinburgh (he is also a bit of a hottie). From the beginning, Mike makes it clear that he doesn’t believe in the ‘magic pill’ when it comes to physical fitness. “Losing body fat and getting in shape is theoretically simple, but practically challenging. The bottom line is that to lose body fat and develop lean muscle tissue to the extent that you look fit and lean takes a lot of hard work. Does that mean we’re screwed? No it doesn’t. There are plenty of things we can do in terms of dieting and exercise that can create a lean figure and feel wonderful about ourselves providing we’re willing to demonstrate a degree of discipline and dedication.” Discipline and dedication doesn’t sound as much fun as dark chocolate and DVDs but then if Gwen (or Gwyneth for that matter) swear by it perhaps it is worth pushing ourselves that bit harder in the gym. “The vast majority of celebrities such as

I

Gwen Stefani work really hard to get in that type of condition. Gwen is the most hard-working client I’ve ever trained, and the results show it.” What about the rest of us ‘normal’ folk? How much hard work should we really be putting in? “Well the issue is not necessarily time, it’s quality, or intensity,” explains Mike, “One could train 10 hours per week through low-intensity cycling or three hours per week in a Personal Training session at a much higher intensity and they would do better with the latter. As an average guide 3-6 hours per week is good enough for both.” But what exactly should we be doing when we do take the time to exercise? Mike’s philosophy seems to be to keep things simple; “Ultimately the best way to look lean and wonderful is resistance training coupled with cardiovascular conditioning.” There are of course many other factors to take into account when it comes to the right amount of exercising, the more obvious one being age. On that, er, touchy subject, I wanted to get Mike’s opinion on the ’middle-age spread’ and find out if it was fact or fiction. “100% FACT,” asserts Mike. “You only need to look out your front door! I hear so often during consultations at my personal training studio in Edinburgh that people ‘used to be fit’ but through work, starting a family, more responsibility etc. they are no longer active. apparent and this also leads to weight-gain through poor eating habits and rising levels of the stress hormone cortisol that promotes fat storage, particularly abdominal fat.” So, what to so to try to shape bodies in the Gwen Stefani direction? Mike recommends a ‘firm but gentle’ approach.” Sounds like my approach to parenting but do let me know if it works for you and your body too! Q:

To sum up – yes. You treat them exactly how you’d treat your own hair and can style them in the same fashion. We use Great Lengths real hair and the quality is first class (pictured below). The difference after a full head application can be pretty dramatic. Investing in a full head will cost from around the £800 mark, but the transformation will be significant.

A:

I’ve got blonde hair and I feel it looks lacklustre. I’m not keen on highlights being applied but someone in the office suggested lowlights to break up the solid look of my natural colour. Is this a good option?

I think lowlights would certainly help break that block colour look. I’d suggest several shades so the look is very natural. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist to try different shades.

A:

Is it wrong to tell my teenage daughter that daily use of her straightening irons is damaging to her hair?

Q:

It’s correct – and please keep telling her and encourage her to stop daily use please. That constant exposure to heated appliances will play havoc with her hair condition.

A:

I’m a slave to my frizzy hair each day. I need to get up so early to ensure that I’ll get in under control before leaving for the office. I’ve swithered about getting it chemically straightened but have never had the confidence. What’s your remedy - and will it last?

Q:

Without doubt, the most concerns we get from new clients is focused around the big frizz so take heart that you’re not alone. However, there is a solution at hand – and that’s the excellent Nanokeratin Gold Therapy smoothing treatment (pictured top right). This contains gold and cashmere keratin and works

extremely well. The Gold Therapy treatment costs from £250 and that includes a cut. Once it’s done in the salon you can’t wash your hair or get it wet for at least three to five days. My boss moans at me when I book him an appointment at his usual salon because his stylist rarely uses scissors. He says he shouldn’t always have a haircut with clippers. What’s your guideline for a gent’s hairdo?

Q:

To be honest no one size fits all. Perhaps all your boss needs to do is raise the issue – I’m sure the stylist will be only too happy to change his or her way of cutting. A combo of both will often deliver a great result.

Sara Hill - Make-up Artist Power dressing is a term that has been used since the late 1970s and reflected the clothing styles favoured in business and politics in the US and UK throughout the 1980s. The style was influenced by the cast of the television US shows Dynasty and Dallas, and was even sported by the Iron Lady herself ex Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Women have come a long way in the work place in the last 50 years, so, do we still feel that wearing a suit is the way to equality? If given the choice would we still wish to dress the same as a man? Or is it just a uniform like any other? Some feel that what you wear to work shouldn't be a reflection of our talent, status or success, wearing a suit in the corporate environment creates a sense of balance removing a women's ‘sexuality’ so it doesn't become an issue. “Everyone knows that you should avoid clothes that are too tight or too skimpy. If your clothing is overly revealing, you may have difficulty getting attention for your ideas" says Leah Bourne, Forbes women magazine. On the other side why is sexuality seen as a negative, why should a women's natural body shape be seen as a ‘distraction’ or even sexual for that matter with more and more women entering the board room and leading the corporations is it time to say no to suits and dress the way we feel best? Laura from Glasgow City Council told us, “I have to wear a suit and shirt to the office, but I'm a DD chest and I have to always be aware of my middle button popping open during meetings at work, it drives my mad, surely being comfortable in what you wear would make everyone feel more confident and in turn more productive. I’m not talking about mini skirts but at least something a little more on trend what be good." So whether you feel more confident in a suit, or would prefer to wear something that showed a little more curves, maybe whichever option makes you feel more like an individual is the way to go. Why is a suit still deemed a professional uniform? For a man or a women, maybe it's time for a change, maybe men could start wearing dresses!

LIGHTLY SPICED MIXED SWEET PEPPER RISOTTO Serves 2

INGREDIENTS 140g x risotto rice 1 half x vegetable stock cube 1 half x small diced red pepper 1 half x small diced yellow pepper 1 half x small diced orange pepper 10g crushed dried chillies 15g small diced ginger 1 x tbsp sesame oil 75 ml olive oil 30g small diced shallots

METHOD • Mix the peppers and put half of them in pot with the ginger, olive oil and sesame oil. Sweat the mixture then liquidise to a puree before setting aside. • Fry the rest of the diced peppers in olive oil and add the chillies to finish before setting aside. • Sweat the shallots then add the risotto rice and pepper puree along with the crumbled stock cube and water. Cook while stirring all the time (approximately 8 mins) until absorbed and rice is al dente to taste.

• When ready to serve add the cooked diced peppers and chilli to risotto and stir until you have a good mix flecked with peppers. • Serve in bowls with freshly grated parmesan.

These days there is much more to Spain than Rioja - every region has something interesting and tasty to offer. Here are our current favourites... LUIS ALEGRE CRIANZA 2008 (£11) has everything you want from Rioja. Ripe fruit flavours of plum and black raspberry are beautifully balanced by the spicy oak, and there's a nice savoury twist which makes it a great dinner wine.

TUNA LOIN WITH NICOISE SALAD Serves 2

INGREDIENTS 2 x medium sized tuna loin steaks Olive oil Flour (for dusting tuna) 2 x eggs 2 x boiled new potatoes 12 x trimmed Green beans 2 x plum Tomatoes 2 x thinly Sliced radishes 2 x small diced spring onions Red wine vinegar 75g black olives Salt & pepper Selection of salad leaves Chopped chives METHOD • Boil the eggs for 12 mins, cool in cold water then peel. Slice the eggs into quarters and set aside.

• Wash and cut each tomato into 4-6 pieces and add to the leaves, spring onions, olives, radishes and leaves. Drizzle with olive oil, red wine vinegar and salt and pepper. Mix.
