Constable Burton Hall was built for Sir Marmaduke Wyvill by the celebrated architect John Carr in 1768 and this elegant Georgian house is now home to Mr and Mrs Charles Wyvill and their family. The sweeping grass terraces, towering veteran trees, and classical temples have been described by historian Christopher Hussey as ‘perhaps the most spectacularly beautiful among English landscape conceptions of the 18th century’. Beside superb views over the Rye valley, visitors will discover woodland walks (including the ‘yew tunnel’), ornamental parterres, and a ‘secret garden’ at the Orangery. The garden and surrounding parkland, which extend to 103 ha (255 acre), are designated a National Nature Reserve for the rare insects and fungi which thrive on the dead and dying limbs of ancient trees.

A tranquil five acre walled garden, built in the 1750s. Originally used to provide fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for Duncombe Park, it fell into disuse after World War One. In 1999 a charity was established to restore the garden and provide horticultural therapy for those in need. Within the garden walls, there are many garden rooms including a spectacular 120m double ‘Hot’ Border, Physic Garden, dedicated soft fruit growing areas and 34 indoors grapevines which are housed in the fully restored Victorian Glasshouse, this also houses the award winning Vinehouse Cafe.

Wentworth Castle Gardens & Stainborough Park is the only Grade One Listed landscape in South Yorkshire, and contains a fascinating collection of 26 listed buildings and monuments. The majestic Stainborough Castle, built by Thomas Wentworth in 1730, has been consolidated as a romantic folly offering panoramic views across the gardens and park and over 500 acres of historic parkland can be explored in three Parkland Trails. Both red and fallow deer can be seen on a daily basis grazing in the park.

Raby Castle was built by the mighty Nevills in the 14th Century, and has been home to Lord Barnard’s family since 1626. Barley Hall

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history revealed. The building has now been restored to its original splendour, with stunning high ceilings, exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs, handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.

Country seat of George Calvert, Founder of Maryland, USA, who built this handsome Jacobean Hall.
