Over 400 million people around the world su er from one of two types of diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease characterized by a lack of insulin production, while Type 2 is a condition in which the body does produce some insulin, but cannot use that insulin in an e cient manner. With no known cure for either type of diabetes, patients need medical expertise, drugs, and other supplies to maintain their health. While diabetes exists across every geographic, ethnic, and racial subgroup, the quality of care varies signi cantly. In low and middle-income countries, diabetes care is often decidedly “suboptimal,” largely because of the high costs involved in managing the disease. Most people attribute “diabetes” to high-sugar diets, overweight, and lack of exercise. While diet and weight do in uence the onset of type 2 diabetes, there is a genetic component as well.
