Please check out the weekly newsletter for upcoming events – Movie Night on the Back Lawn; Cabana Night; and Seafoodfest on the Back Lawn. Our Club Management and Team continue to strive to make James River Country Club your family’s first choice for social activities, dining and athletics – creating a unique mix of experiences for all ages alike.

The last two of our scheduled Cabana nights were moved inside due to the impact of weather conditions, but where else do you get the full experience of a Cabana night with specialty menu and live music indoors? There is no place like James River Country Club, as evidenced by the Cabana Night held on July
It was heartwarming to watch, and the Club was filled with energy, when our River Ratz swim team banquet wrapped up and our River Ratz joined their parents in the Huntington Lounge to share an evening of singing and dancing to Vinyl Headlights. It was a spectacular sight to see multiple generations of Club members come together for an indoor Cabana night and impromptu dance party!
I wrote to you in April that we are in the best financial position we have seen in years, affording our Club the opportunity to invest in our capital assets, perform deferred maintenance and observe our reserves. While June and July pose unique financial challenges as a result of increased expenditures (including opening the pools, bringing in additional labor both in dining and in grounds among other seasonal expenses), our General Manager, the Finance Committee and your Board of Directors is mindful of, and deliberately planned for, those additional expenses, in order to keep our Club fiscally sound.
We continue to prioritize Retention, Recruitment and Relevancy, consistent with our strategic plan. With the increased offerings and enhanced use of our Club by new and existing members, our Membership welcomes a full dining room and Huntington Lounge – and don’t forget the Cellar! Increased usage and activity drives additional usage and activity – for that we are grateful. Everyone wants to be a part of a fun atmosphere with friends and quality service! But with that increased activity comes challenges. The food service industry is facing a shortage of workers across the board – affecting restaurants and private clubs like ours. As of January, restaurants were 3.6% or 450,000 jobs below pre-pandemic staff levels, which represents the largest employment deficit among U.S. Industries, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our Club Management, our committees, and the Board of Directors are focused on mitigating those challenges, and we ask that you continue to support our servers and the Golf and Grounds teams in their diligence to deliver an exceptional, first-class experience in all aspects of the Club.
Speaking of exceptional, first-class experience, the Board has heard from many of you about the level of service, food quality and experience that was delivered to your family wedding, anniversary celebration and other special memory making events. Thank you for taking the time to recognize the gem that is James River Country Club, but more importantly, for allowing the Club, and our Team, to be a part of your special day. The Knot is a global family of brands that provide best-in-class products, services and content to take celebration planning from inspiration to action. It has named James River Country Club a best wedding venue in 2022 and 2023 and ranks us with 5 out of 5 stars. The Knot is known to “champion the power of celebration” that is authentic to the persons celebrating. Recognition like that will foster additional interest in our Club, driving exceptional amenities and superior service and membership experience.
As always, thank you to the membership for your trust in Club leadership and for your support of our Club. It may already be August, but I assure you, there is more, and possibly the best yet, to come in 2023 for James River Country Club, and for you, our membership.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Best wishes, Lindsey

JIMMY & TAMERA FAY
Originally from Massachusetts, Jimmy relocated to Virginia where he met Tamara. They reside in Newport News with their four children - Zayne, 21, Ash, 20, Brady, 19, and Cadhla, 3. In 2015 Jimmy left his job with the city of Newport News to pursue a rewarding career in the insurance industry because he was very passionate about making a change in people’s lives. He now owns his own agency covering both Virginia and North Carolina families and businesses.

He is heavily involved with helping other small business owners as part of the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, and is an active board member with the Rotary Club of Oyster Point and the Victory YMCA. Supporting local business is important to him and his wife, and you’ll often see them at community events.
Tamara absolutely loves being a mom and has channeled that into her professional life. She owns a luxury photography studio that specializes in all things motherhood. She also has an online baby boutique she opened during the pandemic shutdown, which she hopes to make a physical storefront in the very near future. She loves to give back to organizations that have a mission to help moms and their babies.
Although Jimmy likes to return to rugby on occasion, his most recent sports endeavor has been throwing himself into golf and he is thoroughly enjoying the game and the learning process. During these next months, you’re sure to find Tamara and Cadhla at the pool soaking up the summer fun. Family time, beach time, and travel are personal favorites, and they are very much looking forward to traveling more abroad in the coming years once their daughter is a little bit older.
Tristin Schilling was born and has lived in Newport News his entire life. He is still in high school, but is homeschooled and is most often seen opening the Outside Golf Operation on weekdays. When he isn’t working at James River, or working on his schoolwork, he spends most of his free time strength training in the gym. Once he graduates, Tristin wants to pursue a career in Personal Training.
Although he isn’t a golfer, Tristin has grown up in family of golfers and loves being able to work outside an interact with the members everyday. If he is gone for any length of time, he most likely headed to his favorite vacation spot, the Outer Banks, with his large extended family. Tristin’s older sister, Bri, is the Golf Shop Manager at JRCC.

We appreciate Tristin’s constant commitment to our team and operation and are very happy to name him August’s Employee of the Month.

Join us on Tuesday, August 15th for a special Ladies only Club Fitting Event. PING makes some of the best ladies clubs on the market and has just released their newest clubs this week! We are going to host a ladies’ Club Fitting event for our ladies to try out these new clubs.

Please click here to email or check in the shop to sign up for the event.
Golf Car Usage:
- Carts Must Remain on the Paths on All Par 3's
- When approaching the end of the fairway, please heed the signs stating a return to the path. These are Green Markers in each fairway
- There should be no more than two carts in any one group. Players should pair up prior to teeing off on the first hole.
- Please keep carts on the path around tee boxes and green complexes.
Driving Range and Putting Green:
- Players should take divots one behind the next and not in a scattered pattern. Long rows of divots are quicker to grow back than scattered divots.
- The Putting Green by the clubhouse is for putting only and members should not be hitting wedges into the green.
Miscellaneous Reminders:
- The Golf Course should be played in order from hole 1 to 18. Players may not skip around groups by playing out of order.
- Fivesomes are not permitted on the golf course without the permission of a Golf Professional.

- Please fix all ballmarks on the greens and fill divots with sand in the fairways and on tee boxes.
In general, we ask members to take care of the course and club as if it were their own home and help us all protect the membership's investment in the facility.
Thank you!
