PROGRAM: Courthouse/Detention SIZE: 775,000 sq. ft. COMPLETION: 2007 The building’s program includes custom millwork courtrooms and grand jury rooms, judges’ chambers, defendant holding cells and support spaces to replace aging facilities. The jury assembly is housed in a cylindrical volume which stands apart to emphasize its reverence in the judicial process. Ceiling construction is minimized allowing abundant natural light to interior spaces. Separate circulation paths for the public, judges, jury and defendants create an intricate design scheme.

PROGRAM: Academic SIZE: 135,000 sq. ft. COMPLETION: 2009 This campus building was gut renovated to receive an emerging program which had outgrown its previous home. A central atrium space was cut into the existing floor slabs, allowing daylight to reach the exhibit space on ground level. New mezzanine levels were inserted between floor slabs of the existing structure allowing faculty offices to overlook the design studios. Stairs and bridges crisscross through the atrium adding a dynamic component to the space and encourage interaction. A rooftop amphitheater rests atop the atrium providing additional teaching space and framing views.

PROGRAM: SIZE: COMPLETION:

Single-family home 8,300 sq. ft. 2006

This home design responds to the client’s need to accommodate extended family and expatriate colleagues. Interior partitions are minimized and exposed roof trusses are planned to promote an open plan for both acoustic and visual continuity. These design components contribute not only to the concept of a shared space, but also aid in reducing construction cost. The extensive use of glazing throughout the exterior wall embraces the surrounding landscape and attempts to blur the separation of interior and exterior space.

PROGRAM: SIZE: COMPLETION:

Single-family Home 900 sq. ft. (Addition) 2004

This addition adds functional area to a home originally designed by the same architect. The use of the same planning module and construction materials as designed in the existing structure achieves a near seamless integration of new program within site conditions. The liberal application of wood and glazing in this double-height space achieves warmth, volume and flexibility that did not previously exist for the owner.

PROGRAM: SIZE: COMPLETION:

Summer Home 2,900 sq. ft. Un-built

The underlying concept for this home is an open, light-filled, geometric form. Interior spaces and floor plates are accommodated within to meet the client’s programmatic requirements. Plan and elevation are organized around a rigid dimension module. Decking surrounds the home to extend the building geometry and connect the occupant with the surrounding landscape. Sculptural human figures and plant growth are playful experiments as structural components.

Research/Office Shell Renovation 52,500 sq. ft. Un-built

An outdated office building became the new home of the client’s business in human genome research. This project is an exercise in conceptual design to imagine a new facade and infrastructure befitting the innovative program. The design scheme incorporates a new entrance atrium, double-envelope exterior wall system for regulating building temperature, light monitors for daylight harvesting, new mechanical distribution and light shelves for solar shading.

Occasional Chair Plywood & Fabric 2006

Custom furniture was commissioned for a home designed by the same architect. Several design iterations were explored with the use of architectural models. Initial design incorporated solid wood and cushioned seats and evolved to make use of laminated plywood and woven fabric for a minimal design with reduced cost.

PROGRAM: Estate Subdivision SIZE: 7.5 Acres COMPLETION: 2006 A large plot of land was acquired by the client with the intent to subdivide and a home was commissioned for each new plot. Architectural models were created to study topography and site planning. The architect used this opportunity to explore exercises in sustainable design.
